2013-2014 Northwestern University Application Thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
thanks. but do you know the number accepted? this only has matriculated.

I thought I had heard before that NW has a really high acceptance rate post II... this seems to not be the case

According to USNW, your acceptance rate post-interview is ~70%. It is indeed pretty high. However, they do defer most interviewed applicants until March before they make a final decision.

MSAR does not have that information. The only data on accepted applicants are average GPA and MCAT as well as percentage with relevant medical, volunteer and/or research experience.

The number accepted (including those accepted in march) is close to 70%. Someone posted the US News data in this thread somewhere so you have to look for it but I'm 100% sure those are the US News numbers. At my interview the dean told us only 5-10% will ever get an actual rejection email. Some will be accepted outright, some deferred and accepted in march, and some will be deferred and withdraw on their own. I LOVED this school, so I'm hoping I'm in that first group so I can just relax 🙁

I wouldn't be surprised if Northwestern made the OP pick one or the other - I feel like this kind of request suggests to NU that you don't think the opportunity to attend Feinberg is a once in a lifetime opportunity, and that your travel plans should take priority over the next 4 years of your career/life.

Disclaimer: I'm just playing devils advocate here.

It looks like they did... 😱

Anyone who interviewed the second half of October not hear back yet?

just got deferred 😛

gotta wait till march now oof!

I interviewed in early October and haven't heard back yet.
+1.
Surprised that the deferred notices don't go out at the same time. Northwestern is a top choice for me (felt so at home there!) so I'm a bit bummed 🙁

I also haven't heard either Accept or Defer yet. Interviewed mid-October. It's a little confusing to me.

I wonder what criteria/process they are using to choose who to tell.

When do the pre-interview rejections begin? (Or, if they already have, when most of them typically happen?)

They happen later on (like next year). I think all at once too.

Makes sense, thanks nemo123!!! So going from this thread NW is currently offering interviews for mid-January (may be late January now) and their interview season goes to the end of February or early March. I'm guessing they will give out 100 - 150 interview invites then. :xf::xf::xf:

Hello everyone,

I recently received an interview invite for mid January. However, I was planning on leaving the country at the end of December through the end of Northwestern's interview season. I have already purchased my ticket. It's my absolute dream to interview/attend Northwestern but I'd also really like to not have to push my trip back several weeks as my trip truly is a once in a lifetime opportunity.

I know this is a bit of a shot in the dark but I figured it couldn't hurt to try. Is there anyone out there that would consider swapping a December interview for my mid January interview? Feinberg doesn't give out most acceptances for a few more months so you wouldn't really lose anything. Or,if anyone has been invited but has lost interest due to other acceptance or for other reasons and is considering canceling an interview I would appreciate the spot so much.

If anyone is considering please send me a PM. Words cannot express how awesome your help would be. Thank you!
Thought I'd give it one more hsot to bump this. Anyone please??

Cool - so basically, seems that I can write this one off with a reasonable degree of certainty if I was complete in late August or early September.

Probably. Though sometimes things are dependent on your reviewers' timelines and when your app gets handed down to the first reviewer. 😉

So this means we wont hear a final decision until next year if we didnt get an interview invite?

does anyone know if northwestern accepts/beneficial to send update letters prior to interview invitation?

They do accept update letters. The person who I spoke to in admissions mentioned that they will accept update letters, and the admissions commitee will be notified of applicant updates, but this will not necessarily prompt a re-review of your application.

Dear Northwestern University,

Why do you hate me, when I show you nothing but love?

Sincerely,

BurberryDoc

P.S. - Please invite me for an interview! I love you, I love NMH, I love McGaw, I love Streeterville, and I love the Bears!

sry if this has been answered previously but when does northwestern stop inviting for interviews?

Did people hear back through email or mail? I interviewed late October and have yet to hear back

Deferred until March. Incredibly saddened.

Can any current Feinberg student comment on how much of your class is actually "deferred" initially and accepted in March? Or if any current applicant has knowledge of this from the interview day.

I read through last year's thread and there was a whole discussion on what percentage of interviewee gets accepted outright, and what percent gets deferred and then accepted in March.

Guess I'm waiting until March.

I don't think anybody really knows this other than the majority of people are initially deferred. Just remember that around 70% of people that interview are going to get in and from what I've heard the main people that are not given acceptances are those that withdraw or show no interest in the school. If you want to get in send them updates etc. and that will make a difference.

I have been complete since mid september...any chance of still getting an interview? it's been three months and it's my top choice school....pretty tense over here. praying for an interview.
I was complete a little before you and it's been silence here too. There's always hope, but I'm not expecting anything at this point.

I was deferred until March which bites because I really liked it there!

I was not a big fan of the panel interview, and I really feel that they were not able to get a good picture of me as a person and a student.
They really focused on one aspect of who I was, and only asked me about one thing.
The other students got several questions about their hobbies, experiences abroad, etc. All I got was variances of the same question. I think this was because one of the panel members and I had this in common, and they chose to leave medicine over it 🙁

(sorry to be vague)

I liked the group project, though, and all the students that I met were really awesome, down to earth people. I LOVED the hospitals and all the resources available for training, and I really liked all of the varying degree options. I thought they had a great presentation and school overview and the whole day felt very organized.

Ill keep showing interest and updating- It really is a great school and I really felt at home there 🙂

does feinberg hand out any more interviews? I was complete early september....I don't know if there is anything I can do at this point???

I just received an acceptance email this morning! (interview 12/6) I'm so excited as this my top choice! Good luck to all those still waiting, I'm sure good news is coming.

I'm sure someone on this thread knows better than I do, but from what I can tell from last year's thread they are almost done handing out IIs. Last year there were a few batches that went out at the beginning of January and then a mass rejection of everyone else on the 16th. Here's to hoping! 😀

Whoa congrats! I guess NW doesn't do acceptances all at once, or SDNers are just taking a break from posting because of New Year's? 🙂 I interviewed the same week as you... :xf:!

Congratulations to everyone who's been accepted so far! Does anyone know if there's a fb group or anything for admitted students? I've seen some for a few other schools already.

can anyone explain to me the pre-req requirements? The website says "(2 Semesters-Lecture and Lab)" for chem, orgo, bio, physics. i've taken 2 semesters of orgo class and 1 semester of lab (lab for orgo 1). does this not meet the requirements if i don't have a second semester of orgo lab?

Yes I believe they want 2 semesters of lecture AND lab. 2 lectures, 2 labs. Other schools also require this, so I think it would be best if you took the Orgo 2 lab (although I know there are some schools that let you substitute Orgo 2 with biochem).

The panel interview was very lame. There were so many questions that had nothing to do with how you would be a good fit for the school or if you would be a good doctor. One of the questions I got was "what superpower would you want to have?". Also, the director of admissions acted like their curriculum was soooo unique and special and that only certain students would be able to succeed under it. On top of that, the current med students were bashing other medical schools, something that I hadn't seen during other interview days at other schools. Too much pretentiousness over there. Already withdrew my app.😎
