Good question. From how things are looking, probably not. I liked Columbus a lot more than Cleveland, but I think I vibed better with Case than with OSU. It's nice to have options, and I think rejections and waitlists will always sting a little.

I hope you hear back from Case soon! 🙂
Good Luck jeffs office and wiloghby. I have interviewed at OSU, Case, Cincinnati and Toledo. I have acceptances from Cincinnati and Toledo. However, I am deferred at OSU and put on hold at Case. I like Cincinnati, but if accepted at OSU or Case I would prefer to attend their because they are closer to my home and have lot to offer to its students. Don't get me wrong, I am extremely happy to have offers from Cincinnati and Toledo. Both of these are great schools at very good locations. However, if one has choice than you look at cost, distance from home and your vibe for the school.

Lol @ Toledo being a good school in a good location

I like suburban setting, that’s why it’s a good location. If you want to be in an urban/big-city setting, then it’s a bad location.

Does anyone know if Ohio State uses shelf exams during Years 1 and 2 to help students prepare for Step 1?

Does anyone know when Dr. Capers is going to make the next set of acceptance calls. He made the last set of calls on Nov. 14 and based on my understanding he does it once every two weeks. But Nov. 28th is Thanksgivings day.

Just checked the twitter. Decisions will come out November 26th. Was deferred on the 29th of October. Anyone been deferred then accepted already?

I am also interested to know this. I will contact a current student and see what I can find out.

The class of 2016 (and all those afterward) will have a board prep block in February and March which will feature quizzes containing old, retired (though perfectly acceptable) questions from the NMBE.

Great, thanks for letting us know!

Is anyone interviewing on the 2nd of December? Anyone flying in on Saturday or Sunday and want to meet up? PM me

I guess they must be getting a head start on notifying applicants for the 11/26 notification date. I just got the phone call, accepted for OSU class of 2018!!! This was my top pick (from Ohio, 4 siblings currently at OSU). So excited!!! Hope that everyone else gets good news too!

I would agree with your rather diplomatic assessment. If you want to go to medical school in Ohio, OSU and Case are far and away the best places to go. Which one is best depends on what you like, but both are fantastic schools.

That said, I am not trying to detract from your multiple acceptances thusfar! Congratulations. I applied to Cincinnati and did not even get an interview invite (yet). And yet I was pushed through so fast at OSU I could hardly believe it. You never know how things are going to turn out.

You are going to end up a great doctor if you go to any school in Ohio, really. But OSU and Case both offer so many extra perks that are nice to have -- but by no means necessary for a good medical education.

EDIT: JFS read my mind. This post is redundant.

Still, congratulations everyone! Come hang out with me at OSU next year.

Does anyone know if OSU discloses how many people from the deferred list get accepted? And of those people who get accepted off of the deferred list, how many were accepted before the deadline of May 15th? Just curious because I was deferred recently and didn't know if I should be expecting to hear back in the near future or if I would just have to hold tight until the end of the cycle. Thanks for the help! Congrats to all that have been accepted and good luck to the rest!

There are no set percentages but as a rule of thumb about 45% of all interviewees are eventually accepted - how many decline is anyone's guess. A significant minority of applicants on the deferred list are offered acceptances well before May 15, but the majority occur right around that time - waitlist movement tends to slow down towards the end of June (for most medical schools). While being deferred obviously sucks, it does indicate genuine interest as Ohio State does occasionally issue outright post-interview rejections.

While we're on the subject, interviewing late at Ohio State does not seem to put you at any real disadvantage - two of my current classmates interviewed on the final date in 2012 and were accepted outright (i.e. no waitlist). Several other of my classmates interviewed later in the season as well.

Basically, if you've had an interview you're in pretty good shape. I myself came off of the waitlist after May 15 in 2012.

Interview invites and acceptances are rather random processes. You can get accepted at Harvard and get rejected by Jefferson (it really happened to a SDNet member last year) . In my own assessment I had excellent interviews at OSU and Case. Much better than my interview at Cincinnati. But I got accepted by Cincinnati and deferred/hold at Case and OSU. I am very happy that I have multiple acceptance and I will make my decision on May 15th based on what choices available to me at that time.
Cost of attendance is also very important to me. I don't want to graduate with a large debt.

I could agree to an extent. I think yield protection is real too. I interviewed at all the Ohio schools except neo (decided not to apply when they didn't respond to a pre-app question) and have been accepted everywhere except toledo (WL) and cclcm (still waiting). I thought I blew away both my interviews at Toledo, to the point where one guy told me he's recommend a recruitment scholarship, but no dice. The funny thing is, i wouldn't discount Toledo if they offered me one, despite disparaging remarks above. Money is the key here- you can get a good medical education anywhere in the US.

I totally agree with your comment, but there are differences in quality of education/training and resources available at different schools.

I will also agree that you have to personally weigh what is important in a school against how much it will cost you in the end.

I finished UG and Graduate school at Case and I have to say there are endless resources at your disposal, and the students here are great. But it was also extremely expensive.

I am not a medical student but if anyone has any questions about campus I would be happy to reply.

How's Cleveland? Are you from Ohio, such that you can compare it to Columbus?

I wish I had applied to Case earlier. I totally underestimated my chances this cycle and didn't bother applying to schools I really liked if I thought they were out of my reach.

I love Cleveland, but I may be biased because I grew up here. It is a totally livable city, cheap and despite what others may say there is a lot to do. I live downtown but most med students live near campus in one of the many close suburbs. Cleveland is what you make it, we have a great night life and cool places to hang out all over Cleveland. I would say the biggest downside for students who move here from larger cities is that having a car is almost essential. The local transit system is not well established.

For me I want to experience a new city so this is why I actually wish to go to another school for Med!

As for comparing Cleveland to Columbus, I have to admit I have never been, so it would be unfair for me to compare.

Case is a great school I am extremely happy and lucky to have spent the last four years here.

I wish you all the best.

I grew up around Cleveland and spent time in Columbus. Honestly I think Columbus wins by an inch as a city for students (both places, but especially Cleveland, are underrated as placed to live though) - most notably, I found it much easier to travel from the city to the suburbs quickly. Because of that, I found it easy to have a nice dinner outside of the city or go to bars and clubs downtown regardless of where you are coming from.

Don't get me wrong, both cities have good restaurants, places to go out or simply hang out, and Cleveland probably wins on the "cultural" component (aka art/music scene) in my opinion, but still, the less dense, ease of getting around in Columbus makes everything seem a bit more accessible.

Can anyone suggest one of the online anatomy courses that OSU requires? I'd really like to find one with extensive videos showing actual dissections/prosections of a human cadaver if possible (as opposed to diagrams or models). I've emailed a couple off the list for more details but haven't heard back.

Does anyone know if OSUCOM is receptive to pre-interview updates? I have yet to hear back (complete in late August)

So if 12/10 is my review date, which would be Tuesday, would Capers be making the call Monday at midnight or Tuesday at midnight? I'm assuming Monday, right? Early morning hours of 12/10?

So nervous. 🙁 I completely forgot to send thank you notes to OSU.

FWIW, I didn't send thank you notes and I was accepted. If 12/10 is the date they told you to check your status then as far as I've seen he could call the night before or in my case on the same day. Good luck!

Didn't send them either. Turnaround was too quick. In my case it was a direct voicemail with no missed call, the night before.

Anyone else struggling to get through the day? Find out tonight/tomorrow. Gonna be brutal. Jeez.

🙁:scared::scared::barf:

Yup. Definitely nervous for tomorrow. Does anyone know whether they update statuses at 12 est tonight or is it at a random time tomorrow?

In my case, Dr. Capers called me the night before the status update went online. Thus you may hear if you are accepted via phone call tonight! But if you don't get a call before tomorrow, that doesn't necessarily mean you didn't get in.

As for thank you notes, I have heard that often times your file will be deliberated on the same day as your interview. So thank you letters probably don't matter at all for admission, though it is nice to keep a line open to faculty and students at the school, and a thank you email is a great way to accomplish that.

I think the status update is tomorrow, but Capers can start calling tonight. So committee meets today, status updates tomorrow.

When did you interview, friend?

Cool, thanks for the info.

And yeah, I mean, they deliberate on the files today I thought? Maybe not. Either way, mine won't have a thank you note in it. Whoops. I've been seeing you post here a lot - maybe we'll be classmates next year! I'll find out tonight, I suppose. :scared::scared::scared::scared::scared:

The status update emails go out in the morning.. say 7:00a Eastern. At least that was the case on 10/29.

As far as I know, they meet to discuss files Mondays and Wednesdays after the interview day concludes around 3:00 PM. And I believe they try to have your file deliberated on as soon as possible after interview...either the same day or the next meeting of the committee. But this is only what I have heard and I have no direct knowledge.

All I can tell you is at the end of my interview day I was one of the last applicants waiting for their last interview, and a couple of roughly faculty-aged people started coming into the conference room with folders of files and sitting down quietly just before my last interview.

I have also heard that they do not decide in these meetings whether to admit, defer, or reject applicants. Instead, applicants are rated and receive a score that ostensibly factors in a bunch of parts of their application. From there, acceptances are ostensibly awarded to those with the highest ratings, with the Dean and a couple of other people given extra flexibility to move people up or down in some cases (e.g. if they really need a trombonist for the orchestra, for example).

From what I have heard, only a few people in the admissions office (and very few on the committee) are aware of what happens exactly between rating the applicants and the announcement of decisions every other Tuesday.

Again, this is just rumor that I have heard from reliable sources. But I'm going from my memory of the conversation so take it with a grain of salt. And in case you are wondering, I did not know any of this prior to interviewing.
