2013-2014 University of Arizona - Phoenix Application Thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Hello Dr. Cunningham:
Is there an official hold email that would have gone out? Or should we just assume we are on hold if in this situation (ie complete in august and have not heard)?

Messages are sent when a final decision is rendered; therefore, no interim messages exist otherwise. While it may feel you are on "hold," we see this as "under review."

This is a shot in the dark, but why not!
I was notified today by the Student Ambassadors that I unfortunately could not be matched for their host program to have somewhere to stay the night before my interview on November 25th. I was curious if there are any 1st or 2nd years out there that check this feed and would be willing to host an east-coaster (male) for one night??? I would be more than happy to buy you lunch/dinner or something for your awesomeness!

I am traveling a long way (VT ---> AZ) and unfortunately have very limited funds for this trip. I am so excited to see the school and meet the UACOM-Phoenix community I needed to make it happen.... anyway I REALLY appreciate any help that I can get from fellow students! Feel free to PM me or post back on this thread, thank you!

Hi Dr. Cunningham,
How often are II's sent out, and what do our chances look like for apps that are under review now?
Thanks!

Me too.... I interviewed Oct 21st and haven't heard anything email/call.

Interviewed nov 4th and the tentative schedule for acceptance decision was today ... I still haven't received any phone calls , or email. Keeping my fingers crossed !

Dr. Cunningham,

I've only been complete for about 2 weeks and am just anxious if the committee has got a chance to evaluate my file. Do you know if they are at a certain date for reviewing new files or do they typically review them as fast as they get them?

Thank you

Luckily, Doctor Cunningham was kind enough to answer this question for me earlier in the thread.

The question is a good one and I'm trying to choose my words carefully so not to set an unattainable expectation. Supplemental applications are reviewed and screened upon receipt, however the timing of actual completeness is based upon the work load of the screeners. Once screened, the student is forwarded to a reviewer who is kept to a weekly schedule. However, some applicants are kept on hold for continued review.

Not as clean cut of an answer that I suspect you want, but the best I can do considering the complexity of our multiple stage review process.

I feel ya man. I am also getting a little anxious, especially because going to school in my home city would be an amazing opportunity.

All decisions have been communicated. Next meeting is scheduled for Dec 20.
Hi Dr. Cunningham:
Do you mean that all post interview decisions have been communicated? Will the committee still have interview invites to give out when they meet again on the 20th? Or will interview invites still go on weekly?
Thank you!

I'm pretty sure she meant all post interview decisions for the week have been communicated. Otherwise everyone who did not receive interviews yet would have been notified, which they were not.

Interview decisions are made on a rolling basis.

The decisions made on Friday (and 1x/mo) refer to post-interview admission offers.

I am already nervous for this ii. I have never done anything like this set up before and am not sure how to prepare. I have the last ii date so I really need to nail it and make a great impression! Any advice would be greatly appreciated!

@Highjump4life

Any advice would be greatly appreciated!

There really isn't much you can do to prepare for MMI. It's like what many people have said, just be yourself! They want to get to know you and how you think/communicate so try not to overthink things and relax. I'm sure you'll do great.

I prepared for this interview as much as I could and it literally did not help at all. I believe this is by design. Rather than see who has the best rehearsed answer, I think they are more interested in learning about your personality and how you think. In my opinion, the best advice is to be yourself, be engaging of everyone you come across (both interviewees and all faculty/staff), and SMILE (cheesy, yes - but seriously, smile).

Thanks everyone. I am a pretty outgoing person so I feel like this set up could work well with my personality. I am just worried that I might have to talk about something that I am not familiar with. I will try to stay calm and smile 🙂

Like the others have mentioned, being yourself and engaged in your conversations and you should do great! Can you share when you got invited and what interview dates were available?

I got an invite last Tuesday and only 3 dates were open...2 in early/mid December (can't remember exactly) and January 13th. Thanks for the advice!

Do you mind to share your complete date please?

Got the II today! 🙂
Very excited to have the opportunity to interview here! OOS applicant, complete 10/22.

Go to the mixer. I was incredibly nervous and talking to people at the mixer really helped relax me. I also got the chance to talk to fellow applicants and it was nice to have friends going into the interview day.

I was complete 10/14.

Thanks, I am planning on going to the mixer. I got an early flight so I could make it!

Does anyone remember what the grading was like at this school? I remember it was a straight pass/fail with no class rankings, but was passing based on a set cutoff for each block or is it based on getting within a certain standard deviation to the mean?

You must score a 70% or above on exams to pass the block. If you fail one block exam but get a high score on another, you can still pass the block. Class means make no impact.

I am also wondering about the number of interview spots left. I sent in a letter of interest today because the previous thread stated that letters of interest were accepted. However, the email I got back stated that my application would not be updated. (Perhaps this only pertains to people who have been granted an interview?) Although this is the case, I am hoping that the admissions office still sees my sincere intent in expressing my continued interest.

Being from Buffalo, I figured there would not be much of a chance of acceptance based on OOS stats. But I had to take the chance after researching this school and everything it stands for. Good luck to everyone who is still waiting on an interview!!!! Hoping for some good news before the holiday's.

Congrats to all accepted thus far. Having lived in the Midwest all my life, I've been on the fence about applying to this program. However, Dr. Cunningham's kindness and transparency is really making my decision a lot easier!!

I do have one question though... is the Md/mph program only offered by the Tucson campus? And if so, how receptive is the Phoenix program to allowing students to take a year off to fulfill an mph elsewhere?

Edit: for what it's worth, I'll be applying this upcoming cycle.

what are the chances of them looking at my app again after being put on hold?

REALLY WANT TO ATTEND THIS SCHOOL!

Dr Cunningham, Are you guys pretty much done offering II? TIA
