2013-2014 University of California - Irvine Application Thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Question for those of you who interview recently:

When does out financial aid file need to be complete. During the financial aid presentation, we were encouraged to file FAFSA for UCI in advance of an acceptance, but what about things like the "UCI Institutional Form"? This form asks questions about how many roommates I have, and other specific questions that I would only know the answer to had I already matriculated and started working on housing. The deadline for these forms is May 1st and we may not know about our application status by then.

The UCI institutional form was also confusing for me at first. I called the financial office and asked what should I write down although I am currently living at home with my parents. They said to put down the information as best as possible in your current position (whether you are currently living at home or elsewhere). I would go ahead and fill out the financial aid forms under the assumption you will matriculate there. Anyhow, you should call the office to make sure.

At the presentation they said that after submitting the FAFSA, we will get a notification saying we aren't in the system or something? And at that point to call UCI so they can handle that. Did anyone get this notification yet?

Does anybody know if UCI is open to giving you a decision earlier? I'm on the waitlist and the other school I'll most likely be going to accepted me in their summer program that starts mid June but all the matriculation docs need to be in by May 1st and I have to pay tuition for the first semester by June 1st I believe. I was also hoping to get into the PRIME-LC program if I do get accepted to UCI... anyone know if that program is full?

I think that specific circumstance warrants a call to the admissions office... No idea if they'd be flexible.

Does anyone known when we should expect to hear back for the 4/8 interview?

Hmm... I could have sworn I remember Dr. Peterson saying she hoped to be able to let us know by the end of April/start of May.

Given your post I think I will prepare my self for a decision right before May 15th.
Typically the decision is handed out the Friday-Sunday following the adcom meeting. So may 8-10. But yeah, pretty much down to the wire

Has anyone that is going to Second Look day received an invite for it? If so, has anyone on the wait list received an invite for the Second Look day?

hey all,

Anyone know how likely it is to get an apt at Palo Verde, if u applied early? I applied like second day. gotta decide to accept another lease now, and i'm afraid to decline it and wait til July only to not have a guaranteed spot at PV. thanks a ton

Has UCI sent out invitations for second look yet?
Yes.
"Revisit Day is Monday, May 12. We anticipate having a finalized agenda by the end of this week and will send it to you as soon as it is complete. Please RSVP to [email protected] to confirm your attendance. We expect check in to begin around 8:45 and the welcome to start at 9am. You will have a rotation of a variety of activities, including a campus tour before lunch, and then we’ll head up to the medical center for a meet-n-greet, hospital tours, and a reception with our new MS3 class. We look forward to seeing you there!"

What about those of us still pending decision. Any word on when/if we will be notified of second look? Thanks

@Gaboon now that May is almost here are we allowed to send LOI/updates directly to dean Peterson or should we be emailing them to the general som email?

I would send it to the general SOM email, the [email protected] (i think it's this one) one. It goes to Dr. Peterson anyways. I called and they told me to send it there and Dr. Peterson replied back.

Thanks for the info! I figured she's probably getting a lot of emails right now and I wouldn't want to spam her.

Withdrew from the alternate list today. Still holding 2 acceptances and 4 other wait-lists.... Trying to simplify matters as we approach May 15.

Good luck everybody.

Sooo...it's May 1 and at least I have not heard anything for the 4/8 interview. I'm guessing ZJ Daddy is right in his prediction for May 8-10. Has anyone tried calling the admissions office?

I know for sure the next adcom meeting is next week, and I'm not sure that all of us are being reviewed then, but as of now, that is the last scheduled meeting.

Yea just checked still no change. Didn't someone mention they wait a week after sending out acceptances to send out wait lists?
I know that the 3/31 group was reviewed on April 16/17. Just to give you a little insight on the timeline. Sorry if that doesn't make it easier. I know how much the waiting sucks.

I appreciate the information. At this point no news is still good news so I'll keep refreshing the status page.

Good luck with the wait list movement. Did they give you a rank or position?

Nope! During our interview they hinted at a high hold list but apparently you'll never know if you're on it or not.

Well, they did say if you get a second look invite, that you were probably part of the "high hold" list

I just got an email saying I was invited to second look day. "We have decided to invite a few higher ranked applicants from our Alternate List to our Revisit Day on Monday, May 12 and you have been selected to be in this group. " I am super excited. I hope this means an acceptance comes soon.

My friend told me he also got one of these messages. Good luck, guys.

did anyone receive more info on revisit day besides that its next Monday? Also do the prospective students bring parents or do they come solo?

Does anyone know the dress code for revisit day? I'm assuming at least shirt and tie formal?

Edit: They sent an email today, business casual

Congratulations! Do you mind sharing your stats? Also did you send in a LOI? Thanks!

Did anyone from the 3/31 or 4/8 interview dates placed on alternate list get invites to second look

This is for those that have gotten acceptance calls. What time of day did you get notified by Dr. Peterson?

9 AM PDT... I was rolling around in my bed.

1-2 months ago, perhaps a week or two after my interview.

anyone from the Bay Area planning to drive down to Irvine on Sunday night for revisit day and want to carpool and split gas? PM me!

Unfortunately, I won't be able to attend second look due to relatively short notice. I'm curious to know how it goes and if you all get any information that isn't readily available otherwise.

Like yourself, my significant other also goes to UCI. I was put on the waitlist back in February but was fortunate enough to be given a second-look invite. If anything new or interesting is noted, I'll be sure to keep you posted!

Is anyone in Irvine for the revisit weekend staying at Ayres Hotel?
PM me if you are. We can grab dinner/drink🙂

@msquaredb

Re-visit day was awesome! I really liked the potential pool of classmates... they all seemed very outgoing and personable. From the looks of it, most of us had fun. 🙂

To start, Dr. Wiechmann gave a convincing speech about on UCI SOM's leadership in instructional technology. On a personal note, this resonated with me; as a "go-to tech guy", I cannot agree more with placing emphasis on the technological training of physicians in order to enhance the quality/effectiveness of tomorrow's healthcare. 😍
As expected, ultrasound was also pushed heavily through an extensive powerpoint as presented by Dr. Fox (awesome guy btw).

Like I promised, the things I found most interesting were:

1) Google Glass :soexcited:. It will potentially be implemented in the school curriculum.
2) Patient simulator. Was really impressed how UCI trains their students by having them practice on mannequins that come to life. (They talk, breathe, even blink!)
3) The faculty. Extremely approachable, relaxed, and had a great sense of humor.
4) Student body. As I alluded to before, everyone was cool.

Hope that helps!

I think that this nailed my sentiment as well!

DubDub as they call Dr. Weichmann was awesome! The technology aspect of our future learning makes it most exciting for me. The AppJam collaboration between Computer science students and med students to develop practical care apps sounds amazing.

One thing that resonated with me was the dynamic between the students across years. MS 3-4-5 students all know each other very well and have an incredible dynamic. They know how to have fun and really have found a way to enjoy the life as students together.

Finally, the staff/faculty at the hospital was great. They all really made it inviting and pushed for us to pick uci as our home. The word family was used a lot to describe the student/faculty/provider relationship surrounding uci, and it was definitely one big family. They all joined us for dinner at the end and wished us well.

The only down side was the 90degree weather and busses without AC.

Can't wait to meet you in the fall!!
