2013-2014 University of California - San Francisco Application Thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
So for applicants that applied to the PRIME program as well, how do interviews work? How do you know you have secured an interview with the PRIME program after getting one for the UCSF MD class? Do they contact you separately? I think I vaguely remember there being a sentence on the initial II status page to email the program to inquiry about your application but I have since accepted the invitation and the status changed...

I think they only send interviews for prime to applicants who have been accepted to regular md, and i think the interviews start early spring

There were two PRIME applicants at my early December interview.

Edit: Oh, do PRIME applicants interview for the special program after they have been accepted? That is not the case with JMP. Both interviews are pre-acceptance.

Why can't they just give us a date when decisions will be released... It would eliminate a lot of stress 🙁

(I know the admissions office probably monitors these forums... so, please?)
+1
pretty please with a cherry on top?

I'm a current MS1 who applied to PRIME last year. Last year, they sent out interview invites for PRIME and conducted phone interviews, post acceptance. If anyone has any questions related to UCSF, you can contact me. Good luck everyone! We all know how nerve wrecking this process is! 🙂

Thanks for the clarification!

my heart leaps out of my chest every time i see that this thread has been updated -.-

I think they are going out tomorrow! Or possibly even tonight.

Just FYI, for applicants to the PRIME program who receive an II, you are expected to shoot a quick an email to the program to "inquire about the status of your application" at which point they send you instructions on how interviews work for them! (The process is pretty much as @speakwhales stated above. After UCSF reviews your application post-interview they forward it to PRIME for consideration. PRIME interviews are by phone February-April.)

Starting to think that we may not hear about post interview decisions until next week. According to interviewees from previous years, the adcoms met on the third Monday of each month. If they still do that, it might make sense that we'll hear something next week instead so that they can consider the early Jan interviewees.

Under normal circumstances this makes sense, but Monday is Martin Luther King, Jr. Day! I believe colleges have it off as a holiday!

That being said, I'm with you in thinking decisions will be released next week, at the earliest.

Just an FYI that at the interview today it was mentioned that the adcom had already met for this month! Fingers crossed for all of you that those acceptances start flowing tomorrow!

When were you told that your group would be finding out?

Also, when I interviewed during the first week of December, we were told that the committee had already met for December. Maybe they switched it to the first Monday of every month?

so If they already met for your month, if we sent updates after, would it matter in the decision?
I interviewed in Nov and sent in updates mid Dec.

I was interested in sending an additional rec letter, I was told if I feel it will add to my application I should send it.

This is getting unbearable! If they've made decisions, can't they just release them...pretty please?

I'm surprised nobody has trolled this thread with fake acceptance news. It's happened before.

I for one, would fall for it immediately and be devastated.

I interviewed recently and was told that the first round of interviewees (before me) would be decided on in late January. The later interviewees will be decided on in late February and/or late March.

Don't stress out!

Interesting, must have shifted! Helpful, thanks!

So the first round of interview decisions meaning whenever they first started interviewing to December? I remember when I interviewed in late November they said they would probably review us in January with decision notifications soon after. Watching my inbox like a hawk. Anticipating last week of January...

I assume the office is closed today, but I'm going to call admissions tomorrow and see if I can get ANY information out of them about what applications have been reviewed, the timeline for decisions, and whether alternate/rejections/acceptances go out on the same day.

I know it's a long shot and I probably won't get any information, but I will let you all know if anything comes of it!

So...I gave it my best shot.

I asked about the status of my application and when decisions were going to be released. The response was that "the committee is still making ongoing decisions and there is no information at this time as to when in January those decisions will be released." It sounds like it won't be till the very end of January, but that some people WILL hear in January.

The person who answered the phone looked up my AMCAS number and said that my file was still under review, and I shouldn't expect to hear anything until February. He couldn't tell me why. I asked if applications were being reviewed in order of interview date (mine was late November) and he said no; the time a decision is made depends on a lot of factors, including how long various committee members take to review your application. All very vague. It sounds like I won't be getting news for quite some time. I'm trying not to be too heartbroken 🙁

Last thing: he said submitting updates was fine. They should be sent to [email protected]

Thanks for calling and updating us on all of this information! Wow, I looked at your post history, and you interviewed in November, but your file is still under review -.- Dang, UCSF is slowly moving to non-rolling admissions....... -.-

I don't know if that actually means anything (the date of my interview). I'm forgetting the exact details on the process that everyone heard on interview day--does this sound right?I think they said that the whole committee is 100 people and there's a sub-committee of 20ish people who are assigned to read and rate your application post-interview on a scale of 1-10. Once all the counts are in, the whole committee meets to discuss the numerical results and make a final decision. So, it could be that just 1 or 2 of the sub-committee members assigned my application haven't gotten around to it.

I think some people who interviewed after me have probably gotten all their reviews in, been discussed, and will hear in the first round of decisions released. Just speculation, I wish I had something more solid!

Totally unrelated, but does anyone know if it's possible to change the name of your SDN handle without just creating a new account? I'm getting worried about privacy concerns and my choice of handle was not exactly the cleverest subterfuge...

That is the same thing I was told. Don't remember the exact number, but I remember feeling amazed at how many people reviewed our application. They give a 1-10 number prior to discussion and then discuss the applicants. After discussion, another number is given while the first number is tossed. Were you able to ask them if waitlists/rejections/acceptances would be given out on the same day or different days?

Also, I don't know about changing SDN handle, but I would PM the moderator to check if they know and if it's allowed.

The answer to that question, it turns out, is you pay them $20. Introducing the new JB4488....! Oh heyyyy guys!

Not trying to rain on your parade or anything but don't you have the same privacy issue since we can trace your old username to you? 😛

Yeah that's pretty lame if you gave them 20 bucks and they still have your old username on your profile haha.

True, but it fixes about 90% of the problem. All my old posts have the new name (except quotes), and I think there's a way to limit who can see your profile at all to only people you follow/follow you. Plus I doubt AdCom members are as stalkerish as we are hah

Edit: I'm a dummy, it was the easiest thing to get rid of. I just had to delete text under "profile details." Now, you guys better keep my secret!!!!🙄

Man, nearly all of our guesses were off. Seems like they're really behind for some reason this year. Just have to be patient!

I agree...pretending this doesn't exist...

Same here. There's nothing to wait for since it's not even foreseeable when in February results are going to be released. It went from mid-January --> mid/late January --> end of January/February. It's really weird how inconsistent they are this year seeing as how in the past, decisions were released on a specific day (Dec 15, I believe). But I don't feel like they intentionally just threw out a random period of time (mid-Jan), especially since the Dean was really nice and transparent about the application process... Guess a lot of unexpected stuff must have come up for all of them. D:

Hi all, for those who applied to JMP, I spoke to someone who coordinates interviews there who said that their last interview dates for that program are in late February. Unfortunately I have no idea if they're still sending interview invitations or how long those go up to. Hope this helps alleviate some of the uncertainty / anxiety!

My friend just got an JMP interview invite last week for an interview date in mid Feb, so there's still hope!

wow, you guys are really getting raked over the coals. hang in there.

Sounds like the three elite Cali schools are effectively going Ivy non-rolling.

hey starmie, thanks for doing that! did the coordinator mention whether any admissions offers were extended?

Got the email yesterday from the JMP. Put on the waitlist. Anyone know what the stats are like for the JMP alternate list? I'm trying to take this as good news for the general UCSF MD program, since the JMP is much more selective... *fingers crossed*
