2013-2014 University of Cincinnati College of Medicine

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
I'm guessing/hoping you've probably already fixed it, but were you entering it in the format XXX-XXX-XXXX? I initially left out the dashes and the system yelled at me.

I appreciate someone finally answering me! haha
yeah that is how the tech support guy said to do it and it still didnt work but then I just tried the same format on my iphone and it did work so yayy! finally got my fee and app in this week, I hope that doesnt put me two far back in line for review!

Hey everyone! Just some info...I just started here at UCCOM! Our first day of orientation was today! SDN was great when I was applying, so here are the stats for my class that they told us today: 173 students, 40% OOS, 52% male, 32.5 average MCAT, 3.65 average GPA. Hope this information is useful, and good luck to everyone!

Much better chances for OOS applicants than MSAR leads us to believe. Happy I applied here.

I'm an M3 at UC right now who is happy to answer any question people have about UC, the newish curriculum, the city, etc.

The traffic question looks for patterns of wreckless behavior. If you don't have a ton of speeding tickets or a DUI then you don't have anything to worry about with this question

We have very similar stats and I'm applying here as well oos. According to MSAR, cincinnati gives out ~300 interviews out of 3700 oos applicants and matriculates 50.

About 1/2 the classes have been OOS

In Cincinnati the police don't take an average of 58 minutes to respond to a 9-1-1 call.

Also, the city ain't broke.

Cincinnati is broke (huge unfunded pension liability), just haven't hit bankruptcy like Detroit yet.

Just wondering what the MMI is like, and when we should expect interviews to roll-out? Thanks!

Interview offers usually start late august, so the first round of invites will probably start going out next week.

I'll preface this with I never did the MMI and all information I have is secondhand. MMIs are usually short scenarios when you have to discuss what you would do and why. They done with faculty and medical students. They are about 10 minutes long each.

Thanks for the quick repsonse! Where are you living in the Cincinnati area, and how affordable is it? I am from Ohio, so I know a little bit about the area. Doesn't it have the perception of being pretty "rough" once you are off of campus?

I live a 10 minute drive from campus in Hyde Park with is the area where a lot of young professionals live. 1 bedrooms in Cincy start around 5-600. Stetson square is a popular place for med students to live but runs 1000 for a 1 bdr and 1400 for a 2 bdr. Most people who live in clifton live south or west of the med school/hospital.

There is crime around campus, but if your not stupid about it (walking around drunk by yourself at night) then there really isn't that much to worry about.

lol fair enough. not bankrupt yet though.

I'm kind of realizing that I'm pretty lucky to be in state here. i did an informal postbac here and despite taking a full year of lieberman's biochemistry taught in the msb i haven't actually really spoken to any medical students.

so what do you like about it? how is the grading? is there much comaraderie in such big classes? what's the atmosphere like within the class?

There is a lot of comarardie in our class. We have a fileshare where people share notes and other study materials.

Grading is pass fail on transcript for the first two year. They do rank in modified quintiles based on actually grades with year 3 worth the same as years 1 and 2 combined. 70% is passing for all preclinical classes. Preclinical grading is very fair.

I love the early exposure starting winter of 1st year where we start to spend half a day every other week seeing patients in community primary care offices.

Glad to hear about the comeraderie.
How young is the class? Does it feel like a lot of people have different life experience before coming?

Do you ever go to Reds games?

probably 80% of the class falls into the straight from college or took a year off group. it is definitely a diverse group. We have a variety of majors ranging from bio/chem to engineering to english. Some people haver spent time in industry, working in other parts of healthcare and those who came straight from college.

As for the Reds, I usually don't, but that's only because I am not big into baseball...its Bearcats and Bengals football for me. We have quite a few fans in our class who make it down for games frequently.

i was at a party with a bunch of recent md grads from uc and they said their biggest gripe when they went through was being in class 8-5 every day, and then going home to study after, i suppose compared to other schools with less dense preclinical schedules. what are your thoughts on this? are they less dense now? how is general student happiness? is attendance optional? how much time is allocated towards independent study for step 1?

class in the morning is all optional except for your gross anatomy dissections. We have live streaming available as well as archived lectures available. typically there is 3-4 hours of lecture in the mornings. Afternoon schedules vary. there is 2 hours a week of small group sessions where you go cases and have other directed discussions. there is 1 hour of clinical skills per week. starting is January of your first year, you spend 4 hours every other week in a community primary care office. I never felt there wasn't enough time to do studying during the week, but I was not a book reader.

There is a mixture of very dense lectures and easy lectures that you listen to once and never visit again.

Step 1 study time was 5 weeks for our class. They are assessing if that is the appropriate amount of time for study time or if it needs to be modified.

Overall there I would say our class is happiness is pretty good considering we've been the guinne pigs for the schools curriculum change.

Good to know. Thanks!

Got an II today. Good luck all!

Barnosaur congrats!

Barnosaur now has officially stimulated the 100+ SDN neurotic premeds to log into Cincinatti's status page and email, clicking refresh every 5 seconds.

Does anyone know if they are in any way receptive to in the area emails? Flights into Ohio are expensive!

Honestly, i looked at last years thread and they were really receptive it seemed like!

Has anyone else heard any news? It seems like not too many people have gotten interview invites yet...

II today, just got the status change email. Nothing comes up when you login, you have to click "application manager" and then "MD program."

3.8, 38, IS

Seems like 38 and above is the magic MCAT number....lol. Congrats to you both!

Ahh, OOS II today!! I'm 2/2 for those in the area emails I sent this weekend. So humbled and grateful.

1) When you're complete here, do they e-mail you? Or does the APPLICATION COMPLETE on the top of my medstop application affirm that I am complete?

2) For those of you with II, what are the dates available? Multiple days of the week? Which months?

Told ya! Lol I wish I could send one but sadly I live in the area, so I dont think that will work!!

II today.
This is my second cycle. I had no invite at all last year.
Low uGPA 3.2 upward trend with graduate study (total GPA 3.5), 35 MCAT, in-state.

Actually very surprised by this because UC is one of my "long shot" school.

Secondary was submitted on 7/10.

Hi people! Just thought I'd tell you my impressions here so far. First of all, I graduated from a very very prestigious school, but with only a 3.6. I had a 34 MCAT. I had several strong leadership activities, 2 years of research, and a year's experience working in a clinic. I also worked at least 15 hours wk. throughout undergrad. I wanted to go back to my home state, so I only applied to schools in Ohio. The top schools I was accepted to in Ohio were Case (too expensive!), OSU, and Cinci. I had a hard time deciding this, but I turned down OSU, even though it's ranked a little higher, because the program at Cinci was very similar, and just had a better feel to it. I wish I could be more specific about that, but I can't. I am very happy with my decision so far, although just 4 weeks in. I love the atmosphere and professors. Everyone is super friendly and they all seem to want to see you succeed. The M1 classmates have all been going out in the evenings together, having fun and exploring Cinci. I have not met anyone I haven't liked. I know we will soon be much too busy to do that often, but it's just nice to feel that I have established some friendships, and that others are willing to help and support each other. I wish you all good luck!

Don't forget that any school almost certainly accepts OOS students who don't choose to matriculate, so your odds of acceptance as an OOSer are higher than the matriculation rate for OOS students.

On a side note, I am also a starting M1 here, feel free to ask me any questions as well. I obviously don't know much yet, but as time goes on I will get a better feel for the curriculum, etc. I am also from Cincinnati originally.

Yeah, I was basing that off the general rule that schools tend to extend offers in the ball park of twice the matriculant number. I guess it's higher because most OOS students that get in here will probably be accepted at their state school and matriculate there because of the lower tuition.

So good to hear! I really hope to get in to UC. It's my top choice. 😀

I hope I get an interview soon (or at all).

Interestingly enough, I have friends from my state applying to Cincy because it will end up being cheaper than our in state tuition.

You can become a resident of Ohio after one year and get in state tuition, which is really cheap. Apparently it is so significantly cheaper than my state's in state tuition so over 3 years it offsets the cost of one year of out of state tuition.
