2013-2014 University of Colorado Application Thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
I interviewed recently and I can add a little more info. The last interview will be on March 7th and decisions should start going out a week or two after that date. According to the student director 80-90 acceptances have currently been offered so there's still plenty of room.

I interviewed end of december (OOS) and got the phone call yesterday as well. I had already dismissed this school as a rejection after having what I thought was the worst and most stressful interview experience of my life. I'm still quite in shock but definitely ecstatic. Just wanted to give others some hope if they thought they bombed the interview!

I had a weird experience during my interview and I was hoping some of you could weigh in. My first interviewer canceled (which I was never told) and their replacement showed up 5 minutes late and ended the interview 10 minutes early. Basically I ended up with a 15 minute interview instead of the standard 30 minute. They had not read any part of my file (might be understandable) and their phone kept ringing. While they were leaving I asked if there was anything else they needed to hear or anything else we could discuss and they said they had the gist of it, thanked me, and left.

I have a hard time believing they could adequately evaluate and represent me with such a short interview (especially considering they did not have access to my file beforehand). Does anyone else think this is worth bringing to the admissions committee? I figure this situation is extremely favorable or extremely bad but I'm interested in what others might think.
Thats good to hear, with the rate of phone calls I would've guessed the class was at least half full!
Also my first interviewer was also replacing for the originally assigned, though I did get the entire 30 minutes allotted for me. I'm not sure if he had the chance to read the entire app before presenting it however, because I think they review you that same afternoon.

Just so you know, they have started to open invitations for FB group invites to those who were accepted. This probably means the admission office has started to reveal who is in the class of 2018 to the prostuds.

Congrats! You must be in heaven! When did you interview? It wasn't yesterday, was it?

I interviewed in December. I wasn't expecting to hear anything until late March, so it was definitely a surprise. CU is my top choice so I will definitely be attending!

Good luck guys!

For those completing the FAFSA application, is it required that we include our parent's information in the FAFSA application from the CU standpoint? Does CU use our parents information to determine if they will give us loans? My understanding is that including parent's information for the FAFSA is just based on need for the federal loans. I just want to know if Colorado needs our parents information for their loans. If anyone has any information, please let me know! Tried to contact the financial aid office about this but they were closed for the weekend.

For those accepted, after mailing the contract did you get any update? I want to verify that they received it.

It's not required for FAFSA, but if you are attempting to get some grants and scholarships from CU and not just federal loans, they likely would want it... I'm not putting my parents info in there since they aren't going to help anyways.

Awesome, thanks for the reply. Did you finish your taxes before completing your FAFSA?

I'm not done with FAFSA. My taxes are complicated. Tip: if you have anything to pay off (anything with higher interest than 6% interest) do so. Your bank statement will be lower and therefore have higher chance of need based grant. I for one am waiting to pay off loans and my car before filing FASA.

I called them once the 2 week period was up and asked if I could get a confirmation that they received my packet. They called me back a couple of days later and said that they got it.

Did they make the facebook group private? It's not showing up anymore.

Dai-an invited me - too bad it was my non-Facebook email. You just wait. I bet committee sends them a list of students to invite.

Got the call from Dr. Grenardo yesterday afternoon!! I am still fairly sure I am going to wake up any minute.

I'm a Colorado native, so I am incredibly happy to be attending medical school in my wonderful home state! Ahhhh!!!

Awesome news! When did you interview?

Hi Everyone,
Lurker here but I wanted to add more information.

I got a phone call acceptance 2/8, interviewed in Dec, completed Oct

OOS, non trad, strong ECs & MCAT

I have not however gotten any e-mail confirmation nor has my status changed on the portal. I think the phone call is a nice personal touch which really speaks about the environment they want to create. This school is amazing, my SO can transfer for work, and I enjoyed Denver so I'm thrilled to begin in Aug. Best of luck everyone!

Dear fellow lurker,

Here how you get them to mail you. On the website, it states you must send in a contract within 2 weeks of being accepted. Email or call them and ask to clarify if that starts from the phone call or the actual letter/email. They emailed me and mailed me my acceptance letter the very next day with status change.

Good luck

Also does anyone know when orientation week starts in August? My friend is getting married August 15 (Friday) and I'm probably going design her invitations as penance if I can't make it. Thanks! 🙂

August 8 - not sure if its a one day thing or the beginning of a chain... Not sure when classes actually start.

I was curious too, so I called the admissions office, they said that the acceptance emails should go out today or tomorrow. 🙂

Does anyone know the lowest mcat score that colorado has admitted?

Does anyone know the lowest mcat score that colorado has admitted?

This is the data that Dr. Grenardo gave at an informational session late last spring for the 2013 entering class:

MCAT Avg = 32
MCAT Range = 26 - 42
GPA Avg = 3.73
GPA Range = 3.0 - 4.0

Hope that helps.

Yes IS for the win!

I am working on my FAFSA now (forgot how much I hated this thing).

Good luck to everyone still waiting!!! @Jennyfishy

When Dr. Grenardo called me, I asked about the second look day and he mentioned April 13th as a tentative date. Does anyone know?

HA! I called I think right after you did....maybe we should take turns calling so it'll be a steady trickle of nagging instead.

For what it's worth I applied very late in the cycle: sent in AMCAS in Sept and procrastinated like a champion before sending in my secondary on Dec 30 (yes I know this is breaking the cardinal rule of med apps but I have unique circumstances). Found out yesterday I got an interview. They specifically told me they still had "plenty" of seats to fill for this cycle. So don't lose hope for all y'all who havent heard back!

Am I the only one who gets worked up on Friday because I know CU makes phone calls on Saturday/Sunday? I haven't felt this pathetic since middle school...

They called me Friday. In November, people said they got calls on tues/thurs.

it's feb 14. Take a breather! Play some dota/league. Plus - Colorado people - traders joes is opening today - totally stoked. Going to go on a date with myself and traders joe :3.

I think I'll take your advice. I'm going to stick with micro brews and battlefield!

i played with one of my friends yesterday who has a lower match making ranking that i do. one of the questions asked during the game: crystal maiden, do you think those wards are important? i ended up muting and reporting my teammates. dota 2 man... dota 2. on that note, play dark souls, that game will surely let you relax.
