2013-2014 University of Louisville Application Thread

Edit: stupid app posted twice,
oops.

Yea. Mine posted twice earlier, so I just changed the second one to the second look question. Must say I'm pretty excited as well. I start my new job Monday as a tech in the ED at UK, so at least I have that to do between now and then.

When is the next time we will need to do anything? I've sent back my acceptance letter to hold my spot. What is the next step?

You should get an email telling you how to set up your blackboard and UofL website log in. It basically has stuff about the immunizations, transcripts, etc. Sucks though because I was going to get my titers done and the TB tests at the same time, but they have to be within 60 days of the starting date of school next summer.

I think I set up the email a while back, so I'm good all the way until summer now, right? Then I'll need to immunization and such

If you're out of school, you might want to go ahead and forward your transcripts

Congrats to everyone who has been accepted! If you have any questions, I'm a current first year student and I'd be happy to answer anything about the new curriculum or the summer's construction.

Err...please do tell! I was unaware of both of those factors. Mind to elaborate a little?

For anyone who was waiting for an interview invite, I received an invite for the January interview dates this evening. So check your email guys!

Just received an interview for jan...I chose the 9th. I was complete on Oct 5th. Good luck everyone!

We just did hear about the changes you guys will have next year. They're updating the curriculum per guidelines from the AAMC, it seems. It's more like a systems-based style, even though it's very similar to what we're doing now, only more condensed. It looks like Anatomy/Embryo is still combined, but squeezed into 10 weeks instead of a full semester, with four block exams. With that tight of a schedule, I don't know if there will still be the dissecting we do now, or if you'll have more prosecting. It also looks like Histo will be combined with Molecular Medicine, which is combined biochem/genetics. We've only seen an overview of it so far, so more things may be changing. It was unclear to me as to if these changes were set in stone yet.

Major construction starts this summer. New lecture halls, new college unit lab space, lounges, the works. The final plans are still being worked out, but they did take into considerations some of the concerns our class had. It should be a good change though; the building really needed some sprucing up anyway.

Sounds interesting! I hear everyone is moving toward the "more efficient" system based curriculum, not just Louisville. Hopefully I'll survive.

Any clue when all of the renovation will be finished?

EDIT: thanks for the info, btw

Does UofL usually give out scholarships? What kind of applicant would you have to be to get one, and around what time are those given out? Thanks in advance to whoever answers.

Scholarships usually go out the first few months of the new year. There aren't many for first year students though. All incoming students are considered for them and there is not a separate application for them.

From what we were told, it seems that they want the renovations to be completed as soon as possible, but I doubt they'll be done in time for next August. I've already been looking for other places to study since it seems campus won't be a productive place for me.

Did the committee meet yesterday? I'm wondering if I should be expecting to hear back from them today or not.

When the committee didn't meet last month, they sent out an email, so I assume they would've done the same if it was cancelled yesterday. I am hoping to hear back today, but not getting my hopes up too high. Everyone, post on here if you hear back today! The admissions lady made it seem like they would be filling the class today when I had my interview in November, so we'll see I guess.

I interviewed on Dec 3rd and the admissions office said that it would be filled yesterday. Unfortunately if they cancelled their last meeting, it means they have many more applicants they are considering this time (could be a plus or minus). Fingers crossed!

I meant yesterday! Oopsies! I sure hope to get back a decision today. I interviewed November 19th. Let me know if you hear, and I will do the same 🙂

Judging from past threads, I think they usually send out emails between 1 and 5 pm. I have a final exam from 2 - 5 pm to keep me occupied =D

Any news, anyone? I'm getting really antsy!

No decision made on my file either. Are the remainder of the applications just going to be put on hold until April?

Hello, I have gotten the no decision reply after two committee meetings and am in a panic. I am a senior in Chemical Engineering with 33 MCAT and 3.43 gpa. What are my chances? The interviewer said that it was very nice talking to me and that it went well. But, I am still nervous as can be! Thanks for your time and good luck to you all.

Not sure if it helps any, but I interviewed on the second earliest day, and they told us essentially "don't royally mess this up, and you'll get in", mid-meeting. They also told us when the committee meetings were, and that we would likely hear back as soon as they were allowed to tell us. Well, both of my interviews ended with "that went well" and "it was great talking to you", and my file made it through at least 2 committee meetings later than they told me that it would. I was accepted about a month after the earliest date they were allowed to tell us. Just be patient, don't give up hope!

I'm a BME with similar stats and I got in. I think you're fine as long as the interview went well. Good luck!

Did you guys send an email to accept your spot or does it need to be snail mail?

I sent an email. My email literally said:

"Hello,

I accept the offer of admission.

Sincerely,

--------"

When is Louisville's second look day?

Can anyone give me a brief idea for what to expect for a Trover interview? Time frame, number of interviews, etc. Anything would be appreciated!

betachainz... first, congrats and good luck. I had my interview with them already this cycle and wasn't prepared for what to expect either, but it was fun and great. Expect a long day. Eat breakfast before you get there. They'll feed you lunch, likely a quick bite in the faculty lounge or in their lecture area, but I didn't expect a lunch and was so pressed on the schedule between interviews anyway that I decided to not eat lunch. That worked well for me; I think it would have made me feel sick on top of my nerves.

You'll have about 5-6 (can't remember exactly) interviews that day... yes, seriously. All back to back minus the brief lunch break. You'll first arrive and check in with Pam, who is great and super nice... but then again, everyone there is. You'll definitely end with an interview with Dr. Crump at the end of the day, and in between you'll meet with a few various people in their Trover program. None of the interviewers will be students, but you'll have a Trover student with you the entire time to escort you around to each interview and wait with you, so you'll have plenty of time to ask questions all day. I think I left there around 3-4 pm, if I remember correctly. It seemed pretty long and exhausting to walk and talk all day, but it was really a great experience. Bring a water bottle; my mouth got dry from all those interviews, and I was glad to have one with me. PM me, if you have specific questions. I absolutely loved the rural program and atmosphere there. Good luck!

Brand new poster here.

I received an II on Dec 12 for an interview on Jan 22nd.
My grandfather graduated from here in 1955 (so legacy)
3.55 cGPA
30Q MCAT
OOS

I was wondering what you all were talking about when you said that you thought the class was "filled" a few posts back.
Am I to assume that future interviews are for WL spots?

Is it true that teh OOS WL top third usually gets in?

Does the ADCOM consider your stats as well as your interview during post interview meetings or does it just go off of your interview feedback?

I've been reading this thread for a long time now and I'd just like to say thank you to everyone who has posted, I've learned a lot from you!

Sorry, wish I had an answer for you and hopefully someone can shed more light on the topic for you, but try not to worry about the whole WL thing. Just do your best and make sure you keep all options open. Good luck!

Thanks! UofL is my top choice in schools. I think I might come down with early onset arthritis from keeping my fingers crossed all this time.

That's pretty interesting about your grandfather. That's way back! I mean, I realize these med schools are old, but real-life proof like that is cool.

Haha, yea he was around when Kornhauser, as in Kornhauser Library, was a Dean at UofL. He did research on the first radioactive markers used in PET/SPECT scans. He shut his practice down a few years ago but keeps up with his AMA certification. Next year he will have been a doctor for 60yrs!!

I had my interview today and the Director of Admissions said there are 155 spots for incoming class and they had given out all 155 spots, but now they will give out about 40 more to the people who interviewed/will interview in dec, jan, and feb. She also said if you are placed on the top third of the wait list you chances are very good. She said since 2002 they have exhausted the top third of the wait list. Good luck everyone!

Congrats to everyone who has been accepted! If you have any questions, I'm a current first year student and I'd be happy to answer anything about the new curriculum or the summer's construction.

I was accepted a few months ago and will attend.

Questions for any current students out there. (I can't make it to the pre-orientation in Feb. Maybe some of these questions will be answered there. If so, please share.)

1) What's the class schedule like during the first two semesters? i.e. # hours of class per day, anatomy lab days per week, test schedule, systems-based?…

2) Are all the lectures video-recorded and posted online?

3) Can MS-1 volunteer in the free clinics in Louisville? I looked at the course catalog and it seemed like most of the electives specified MS-2.

4) Do MS-1 do clinical preceptorships/clinical shadowing? Is this a requirement?

I think that's all for now. Thanks!

To answer the question that hasn't been addressed: The interviews are blinded, but when you are brought up before the committee they will certainly take your stats into account when it comes to making a decision.

I tried starting a different thread to discuss this, but got no replies. Has anyone been accepted to both UK and UofL, or has had to make that decision in the past? They both seem like such good schools, I'm struggling to decide..

Thanks Tommed, its good to know where you stand, even if it isn't the best of news. I guess I'll just have to dazzle them in my interview and hope for upper thirds OOS.

Not officially... I was offered interviews at both and visited both areas and admission sections, etc on my own and decided to drop the UK interview after I finished at UofL. I think the decision is going to be personal for anyone in that situaiton. For me, it was a combination of just preferring the following more at UofL (not that anything was negative about UK): the city, the seemingly more opportunities available during clinical rotations, the slight variations in clinical programs, the layout of the school... UofL just clicked for me. Anyone could say good things about either of them, and I really think it's going to come down to how you personally feel about one or the other. Good luck!

Thanks for the input. I think I'm probably just going to have to go back and visit Louisville more. I've been to Lexington a lot and know the area pretty well but I've only been to Louisville for interview day. Like you, the layout of UofL was much more appealing to me than UK, but UK did have some impressive equipment and facilities and such. Ugh..

Also accepted to both, and haven't made a final decision. I'm leaning towards UK. I just had such friendly interviewers, and all of the faculty/staff/students I met were super supportive and nice. I also dig the out-by-noon schedule, but I honestly don't remember how Louisville's is structured. I also really liked the facilities and hospital in Lexington.

@Ts1991 and @1012526fs, care to comment on what you mean by the layout? What specifically is appealing vs. Lexington? It's all getting foggy for me.
