2013-2014 University of Louisville Application Thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
If you don't mind me asking, what were your stats for last year's cycle and how you thought your interview went.

No problem! They were essentially the same as this cycle. 3.7 sGPA, 3.6 cGPA, 28P MCAT. I pretty much didn't prep for the interview at all and then proceeded to go and royally screw it up, giving the completely wrong impression. Lesson learned. I did proceed to take courses like graduate biochem, graduate human phys, and histology my senior year which I think may have helped their perspective on me some.

Anyone going to the second look weekend (pre-orientation)?

I'll be there. Parents were wanting to come take a look and listen to the financial aid stuff. Any idea what will be going on exactly?

Thank you! WOW, impressive stats and post grad work. I'm sure you were more prepared this time. Hopefully we will both be meeting each other at second look day; that is, if we get the desired email two weeks from today haha.

I will be interviewing here within the next couple weeks! 😀
For those of you who have interviewed: What is meant by a "blinded" interview? Does that just mean the interviewers haven't seen your MCAT and GPA? Did you find the interview questions to be difficult? Were there any difficult ethics questions or were they more like "tell me about yourself and why you want to be a doctor"-type questions?

Yes, neither of my interviewers last year knew my MCAT scores nor my GPA. However, both did ask me to reveal my MCAT score. As far as the questions go, neither of them really asked me any difficult, or ethics-type questions. Rather, it was pretty much a laid back discussion about different aspects/events from my application. General questions were also asked here and there like, "tell me one word your friends would use to describe you, and why."

Thanks! I had a lot of free hours my senior year of undergrad, so I figured why not take some grad level stuff. Good luck!

No idea on details other than a day that lasts from about 0800 to 1500. I think they're supposed to email us details of the day sometime soon.

See what UK wrote above... I agree. No questions about my GPA or MCAT, but I felt the need to discuss my bad UG GPA and tie it into what I've done since then. Neither interviewer seemed to care or even want to hear about my poor GPA and kept wanting more info on my application activities and why Louisville and why their school type stuff. Pretty laid back. The student interviewer I got had read my entire packet and had taken notes on what he wanted to discuss with me. The faculty interviewer had a much too busy schedule to have even read any part of my application before he sat down with me, but he got all the info he wanted on me in a pretty fast-paced conversation. 🙂

For those who are curious, here's a look at the new curriculum/schedule for next year!

Congrats! When did you find out? When did u interview? Stats?

I had a 3.9+ GPA with below a 30 on the MCAT and almost zero clinical experience! UofL really cares about who their applicants are as people more so than looking at you as numbers on paper!
Also Thanks Mbho222

That's great! How are you going to celebrate?

Hey everyone,

I'm sure its getting to the point of the cycle where people who don't have acceptances are worrying and getting down. I'm a current MS1 at UofL and loving it but I was on hold and didn't get in until May. Obviously not ideal, but it was still one of the best days of my life. I just wanted to give you all some hope and offer any guidance that I can either on the process or the school in general. If you are on hold, I'd suggest contacting Pam Osborne, in my experience she is willing to meet with you or talk on the phone, discuss your application, her thoughts and what you could do to improve for the next cycle, should that be needed. They rank the waiting list by IS and OOS and then by thirds. Generally the first third of both lists have a great chance to get in. I believe that the middle third saw some movement last year as well. Best of luck!

How do you like it there? Did you grow up in the city? I'm coming back to the second look day here in a few weeks, but I really think I'm going to be coming to UofL instead of UK. I liked the school more, and am picking because of that, but I've literally never been to Louisville outside of high school state track meets so that worries me. I love Lexington as a city, and have been there quite a bit, but it's sort of intimidating moving to Louisville literally knowing nothing about it. I'm from a rather small town in eastern KY, hoping I won't go into culture shock, haha.

Is it safe to assume that no more II are given out?

I would assume so. During my interview last week, Ms. Osborne mentioned that the committee is backed up in their evaluations of the applicants that have already been interviewed. Plus, the class is full.

So who has decided to attend the pre-orientation next weekend?

Is this the first year Louisville will be going to a systems based approach?
I think its a modification of their current format to move more towards a systems based style, but it isn't a true systems based style yet.

You're correct, to my knowledge it's just a modification of the current curriculum.

If anyone has any questions about the school, city, etc I'm more than willing to do my best to answer. Just shoot me a PM.

Cheers

As others have said, this is more of a transition to the systems based. With that being said, we will be the first class to try out this style at the school.

Hey 2014 applicants. Haven't been on here in awhile but remember what it was like watching the email for news. I'm MS1 so if you have any weird questions you would rather ask via im, please feel free and I'll help you guys if I can. Good luck!

So the committee met yesterday right? We could get an email soon?

Was wondering the same thing...they said they would get back with an e-mail the Wednesday after the Tuesday they met regardless of the outcome.

Sigh...the wait continues, but no news is good news, gotta stay positive!

I am waited with bated breath too! There is still hope! On the 15th of last month I got the email stating that no decision had been made at 5:04 PM....

Okay, I'll keep checking my email then. Thanks for the info!

No decision. Lots more waiting to be done I guess...

When I interviewed (in November) they said that they would be letting in around 30-35 more people in late February when they got a list of the people that hold multiple acceptances. Today I got and email saying no decision had been made, but that wait list decisions would be made by March. I'm not sure what this means. Did anyone else get the same email?

Yeah, that was the one I assume all no decisions got?

Does this mean that we are on hold? Or does it mean they still didn't get to our files? I'm so confused and I feel like it was a super vague email.

I think it just means that we were either not discussed or they couldn't decide, and so we will be considered at later meetings as they start to form the wait list. Aside from that, I don't have a clue

So basically at this point the only options are wait listed or denied?

To be honest I'm not sure, so I don't want to tell you the wrong thing. That being said, I think those two are most likely at this point unfortunately.

Hey, look on the bright side; you haven't been denied yet. From reading last years posts, the only time to really feel that there is no hope is in June or July. Also, you will end up where you belong; be it at another university in another year or a different profession entirely. Being denied is not the end of the world. There are much worse things that could happen to you. Be happy for what you already have.

On a side note, if you make yourself smile, you will begin to feel better; this is a proven fact and an easy way to ward off the blues.

does an out of state student need significant in-state ties to have a shot at Louisville?

how often does the admissions committee meet on a monthly basis?

From the speech they gave at second look day, there were students from a pretty large number of states (but I can't remember exactly how many) in this class. There's a percentage listed on the MSAR of how many students are in-state vs out-of-state each year on average, I believe. I'm on my phone right now, I can look it up later if you don't have access to that.

They usually meet the second and fourth Tuesday of each month.

I believe I remember hearing 28 states? It was really neat to hear him give the stats and profile of the incoming class.

I heard him say Harvard! Wonder why a Harvard student would choose UofL? I mean, I wonder what specific thing attracted them.
