2013-2014 University of Louisville Application Thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
I heard him say Harvard! Wonder why a Harvard student would choose UofL? I mean, I wonder what specific thing attracted them.

I was quite surprised. Harvard, MIT. It's honestly un-telling what it was. I know I'm set on Louisville after that pre-orientation though. I just got a feel good vibe from the deans that I hadn't felt anywhere else.

Agreed! I was really sold by the excitement from all the deans and faculty but also by all of the students on the panel. They were really great and so down to earth about their experiences. Very impressed with their board results as well as their clinical experiences. So excited to go there!

Did anyone else get that email? Looks like no scholarship for me..

So does anyone know if the admission committee meets this week and if so what day?

The UK thread brought up a good question.. does anyone know how the grading works here? Pass/fail, letter grades?

Honors/pass/fail. This is one of the big differences between UK and UofL.

Tuesday so we may hear something on Wednesday

In the last e-mail, they mentioned that they are now beginning the process of waitlisting. You think they still might hand out acceptances while formulating the waitlist on the side?

For those who have been accepted, how long did it take to receive your acceptance letter in the mail?

for those that haven't been accepted yet, are we suppose to get an update on our application status today? i just interviewed two weeks ago so i'm not sure how this whole process goes

I did. Just an e-mail stating that no decision has been made on file yet.

yup, i don't think they'll be making many decisions until seats start opening up since i'm pretty sure by now they've filled all their seats

It says they will be meeting through March, so I guess they will make all the wait list decisions in the next two meetings?

Then if you make the wait list, it's the long wait until the week after May 15th I suppose. Or May 9th (when people can see what wait list third they're in).

Has anyone been checking this thread everyday hoping for something new to read or is that just me?

Has anyone at least read any new journal articles worth sharing?

I've been checking this thread daily in search of any news. I've become a little neurotic.

Same. I've read recently that scientists are getting closer to a vaccine for HIV and Hep-C and also, scientists have isolated the protein that causes baldness and are experimenting on rats to figure out how to stop that protein from being synthesized.

Anyone else looking into the pre-matriculation program? I noticed the email that was sent out earlier.

The committee is meeting today, correct? :nailbiting: Here's hoping for good news for at least some of us tomorrow!!!

Did anyone get a decision today, wait list or otherwise? They said they would inform applicants about wait list status by March 26th, so they only have one more meeting to work on it.

So does a no decision email today pretty much guarantee you at least a WL spot?

Well, I've been waitlisted. I don't know whether to be happy or sad right now...

Does anyone know approximately how many applicants U of L accepts off of their waitlist? I know it changes from year to year, but I wondered if anyone has found any stats regarding this.

So seems they've been put on LCME probation due to the pace of change in the curriculum and the 'adequacy of the preclinical building.' Neither are very concerning for me, but thought I'd post it here in case everyone didn't get the email.

Aren't they doing renovations to the building and changing the curriculum to keep their accreditation?

They are renovating/building, and I think the curriculum concern was because of the rapid change over the past 18 months.

Hmm, I'm not too worried. I'm sure everything will be sorted out shortly and at least by the time we start rotations and definitely by the time we graduate.

Current MS1 here: The medical school renovations will be complete this summer and the curriculum change will already be in place by the beginning of next year which is why everyone is almost 100% certain that when the LCME comes back next year the probation will be lifted. I'm not very worried about it, considering that the LCME usually comes back 2 years post probation status like at Marshall, GW, etc but because changes were already in place and ready to go come summer they were willing to come back in only a year.

Hey all! Can those with children recommend some childcare facilities? Specifically a center where you are comfortable sending your own children 🙂 I'm oos and my 1yr old will be entering daycare for the first time once we move to Louisville. I'm a first time mom so there's a little anxiety there lol

Hey all! I was waitlisted on 2/28 OOS and received a request for CBC to be completed. Just wondering if anyone else is in a similar situation. Do they normally send this request to all those waitlisted?

I was waitlisted last year (IS), but never received a request for CBC. I didn't make it off the WL, so you actually receiving it miiiiiight be a good sign ;-)

Yes I certainly hope so. Thanks for the insight!

Good luck everyone! and Congrats to those who have been accepted.

Are all of the curriculum changes going to be new for fall 2014 or have some changes already taken place in the 2013-2014 school year? Modest curriculum changes are fine, I'm just concerned about drastic, rapid curriculum changes all taking place at once and being the entering class to test them. I have heard that a temporary dip in board scores can be associated with curriculum changes as the changes get ironed out.

Does this worry anyone? Just trying to see what people think. The fact it came from a UofL professor is what makes it most concerning I guess. Any opinions? Also, anyone who interviewed early - was there any mention of the building renovation or curriculum changes at your interview? I was at an August interview date, and I don't recall any mention of this (I could have missed it so that's why I am asking). I feel like this would be a huge and exciting drawing factor for applicants if the renovation was planned so why wouldn't they really want to advertise this applicants... It's just odd that out of the blue they pull a 7.2 million dollar renovation and drastic curriculum reform. (Again, I may have not heard about it, in which case I apologize and ignore this comment).

I interviewed in September and do not remember hearing anything about them. I'd say they aren't really out of the blue. It has been know that a big issue with Louisville up until now was that their school was old/out dated, so I'm sure they have been given warnings to update it. Finding out that it was the reason they were going on probation, in addition to the curriculum change, is probably the sole reason for the now advertised and hurried complete renovation of the med school. I could care less honestly, as it just means brand new rooms and lecture halls for us in the fall!

Yeah I am concerned by this too. It seems as if the leadership at the school failed to come together soon enough to effect change in time to prevent the probation. The new renovations are going to be awesome, and I really like the advisory college setup. I am worried about the curriculum changes happening so quickly though. There seems to also be some issue with the organization of the clinical sites as well. If you get any more concrete information, keep me posted.

How much renovation do you think can happen between now and August? The lecture halls and other facilities felt like you were in a dungeon and were pretty outdated. Everything about the medical school seemed old and outdated so it will take a whole lot of work to get things going by this August. I'm very concerned about the rapid changes in curriculum since this class will be the guinea pig class. The large amount of renovations that need to occur to update their facilities by August and the rapid change in curriculum is definitely a bit worrisome.

My guess would be that applicants that interviewed early didn't hear about the renovations and curriculum changes since those weren't finalized until Sept.-Oct. The school sought our input on layout/design of the renovations, so even after we saw the first set of proposed plans, our suggestions were taken into consideration and the plans were tweaked to reflect the accepted suggestions. Renovation is already underway (actually, the library renovations are almost done), and the curriculum changes have been posted on this thread a few pages back, I believe. The changes are not "drastic" as the above poster commented; we've had a version of it that worked out quite well this year, with mild modifications occurring in the fall.

Newcomer to this site, but I was just wait listed here after more than a few "no decision" emails... Can anyone provide some insight on how much the wait list moves and when most of the movement occurs? thanks!

yup i got wait listed as well. the admissions director said that usually if you're in the top 1/3 that there's a good chance of getting off the wait list (even better chance if you're an out of state resident). i guess it varies year to year how much they pull from the middle 1/3 and lower 1/3.

I'm pretty sure someone mentioned the renovations to me when I interviewed in October. Also, apparently the probation has to do with the pace of curriculum change being too slow, not too fast. I'm not sure I agree with the LCMEs move in this case, since I think gradually rolling out curriculum changes is better for the students involved in the transition. It seems like the LCME is coming down hard on any school that is not fully systems-based. Any thoughts on this?

I believe I was in the first or second day of interviews when they began, and I remember hearing about upcoming renovations and curriculum changes, but it was from the MS-1 I ate lunch with. I don't remember it being formally mentioned to the group, but I'm far from being concerned about it. Should it have come down to probationary status? Probably not, but they'll get it fixed. I am sure a lot of money rides on keeping the school accredited.

Just browsing other threads on probationary topics, it looks like San Juan, Marshall, UT San Antonio, and Rosalind Franklin were all on probation as recently as the end of last year (just a few months ago). Now they're not. No worries. 🙂

UofL is still fully accredited and addressing the concerns, so hopefully no one bolts just because of a probationary status.

I think the probation status is important to recognize. I agree it will get resolved but with only 3 schools in the country on probation it is significant. I thought the article below was interesting especially towards the end where a former professor speaks about the current situation...

I agree, this is something everyone who is planning on attending UofL this upcoming August should look in to. I know it's something that worries me.

Why does it worry you? They're only concerned about the outdated teaching building and the paces of change in the curriculum. It's not like it's due to failing board scores or the school losing its accreditation for not being qualified to teach. There could be much worse reasons to be placed on probation, and this shouldn't affect anyones decision on Louisville. Basically all I'm taking away from it is that we're going to get a newly renovated teaching facility even sooner than before, just so they can get this over with and get off probation.
