2013-2014 University of Maryland Application Thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
I can't believe this school didn't have a why Maryland question. I've lived in Maryland all my life, all my relatives are in Maryland, I went to elementary, middle, and high school in Baltimore (~10 mins from UMD med campus), and I go to college in Maryland. Ughhh

all of that stuff is on your application already, i think they know that. =)

You really don't need to explain why you love Maryland if you're IS, they get it.

I think you should speak to the prompt they gave you. :caution:

Off topic, but two questions for you.

1 How did you get a bad vibe from Pitt without interviewing. You had a change of heart from submitting to getting an II?

2 How exactly is an MSTP different from an MD/PhD? MSTP funding comes from NIH, and MD/PhD funding comes from the school or some other source. Why would you care?

Hi,
Are you an MD/PhD applicant? If so you are welcome to join the forum:

Maryland has an excellent MSTP and I hope to get an interview.

As for your questions,
1) The 8 year commitment to an MD/PhD program is about as long as the average American marriage. You need to be very careful before making such a commitment.
2) Not all MD/PhD programs have the same policies/benefits. MSTPs are more predictable.

If you have more questions, you are welcome to send them via PM

haha oh gosh, obviously some people aren't very careful in making a commitment like marriage

"A letter of recommendation from the Premedical Advisory Committee or the official Premedical Advisor is required if your undergraduate school has such a Committee or Advisor. If you are unable to have this letter sent you should:

Write a letter to the Committee on Admissions explaining why you are unable to have this letter sent and;
Ask the Premedical Committee or advisor to write to the Committee on Admissions indicating that they will not be able to send an official letter."

My school doesn't have a letter committee, but we do have advisors (the one I met with knows nothing about med school, I had to explain the difference between MD & DO....).

Did anyone else write a letter addressing this? I called U of Maryland SOM Admissions, got transferred twice, then rudely hung up on without getting a straight answer.

If your school has neither a committee nor a pre-med adviser, then this doesn't seem to apply to you.

Hmmmm...I wonder what non-trads who have been out of school for awhile are supposed to do. Did any other non-trads who applied write a letter to admissions?

Dumb question guys but under the Work Experiences section, are you guys listing your job title under "Work Description," or are you actually going into a few sentences, describing what you did. I ask because it looks like there isn't actually an allocated space here to elaborate, just looks like a small space to list a title or something.

Just received the "We have received your second stage application and begun to process it." email! Ahhh so nervous, I need an II here!!!:😉

just submitted my secondary!! I really am hoping for some IS love and an II!! :luck:

after we send in our MD residency paperwork are we supposed to receive some sort of correspondence about it?

For one of the essays- "Have you done independent research or study?", are they essentially asking us to write about our research projects/papers if we have it? 1000 characters doesn't really get too detailed, though..

I gave one or two sentences about my research, publication, and presentation then talked about what I learned in doing those things.

I have a follow up question - They ask for anything 'outside of the course/classroom requirement.' Do you think they're referring just to labs (like intro bio lab, orgo lab, chem lab, etc.)?

I am asking because I elected to pursue a yearlong senior thesis project, which was a significant independent research experience. I'm just trying to clarify weather I should include this research.

Thanks!

Nah, I think they actually want to hear about your senior thesis or things of that sort. The "class requirement" would be orgo lab, so outside of that class requirement, what lab did you do? (That would be your thesis, etc)

Are these all the questions on the UMD secondary ? what is this one about research? "Have you done independent research or study?" is that for md/phd?

19.) Briefly describe your most important exposure to clinical medicine.
(1500 character max)1500
20.) Briefly describe your most satisfying experience related to community service.
(1500 character max)1500

Yes, don't be alarmed- my question was with regards to the MD/PhD secondary.

Thanks for your inputs!

Hey all!

Current UMB MS-I here. I'm still getting used to the school but the whole admissions process is pretty fresh in my mind. Feel free to reply/PM me with any questions you might have and I'll do my best to answer them.

Maryland's a great school! I'd be happy to help out anybody applying or thinking of applying. 👍 Good luck to everyone!!

Hi Dr. Triffany

What does it mean if you are instate and after you submit your secondary, a week or so, you have the status of your application change to INTERVIEW- not scheduled?

Thanks

It means just that. You don't have an interview scheduled. Everyone has that status. If you get an interview, the date will appear there instead of "not scheduled".

Has anyone received a complete email? I submitted 7/28, got the secondary received email on 8/1, but haven't heard anything since then.

took me a while to get the complete email, but I did get it.

II just now! Finally a relief from a bad day (rejected from 3 other schools today).

Complete couple weeks ago. IS 3.6/34

hmmmmm I submitted that day as well, and received an email 8/01 as well except it was entitled "Secondary Application Received". Is this the complete email? I know that I have all the green checks, but just wondering. Thanks!

How time sensitive is the entire interview process? Is a person that interviews on September 18th at an advantage over somebody who interview in early October?

Yea that's the complete email. You should be hearing from them soon!

They're both really early so I don't see a diff

anyone know if UMD is receptive to updates?

It says on the website that if you have a change of address, update it in amcas and tell them in writing. I also have a few updates I would like to mention in addition to changing my permanent address. Anyone have any advice or tips other than calling and asking (which I will end up doing)?

Yup, if you look at last year's thread, everyone had this status as well.

I didn't send in updates. But I believe they do accept updates and add them to your file...can't really tell you much more than that. If it's a significant accomplishment, like a new publication, it definitely wouldn't hurt. But even if it's something less glamorous, I'm guessing it can't hurt either.

For those of you who got IIs, what year does the invite email say you are competing for? Mine says this interview is for a spot in the class that starts August 2015. This is a typo, right?

We would like to offer you the opportunity to interview for the Class that will enter in August 2015.

Same question.

I didn't get any further correspondence from the admissions office. I did call in about 2-3 weeks later to check if they had received it. Some of my friends who were in-state found out they were actually classified as out-of-state after accepting the admissions offer...but from what I heard, it was fixed quickly/easily.
