Got the Wait list letter yesterday. OOS, 3.9+, 30. Interviewed early March, thought the interviews went fairly well. Good luck to everyone!

Waitlisted just now. Interviewed mid-march. does anyone know if there would be any waitlist movement this year?

Does anyone know when we'd be informed of our waitlist placement (upper/bottom half) ?

On the wait list letter, I believe they said they will let us know after may 15, but I don't think they gave a specific date. Does anyone know what wait lost movement is like here?

Withdrew all other acceptances, super excited to start at UMD in August!

hm I thought it said early May.... but I could be wrong.

They will tell us if we are on the top or bottom half of the WL in "early May" according to the letter. Actual movement happens after the 15th

Ah, my mistake! it's been awhile since I read the letter... I kind of just tossed it to the side when I saw wait list because it made me sad, haha.

Here is everything I know...

I received the Wait List letter back in mid-January. It says... "You will receive an official letter in early May 2014 with specific details regarding the Wait List process."

On the admissions FAQ page it says... "Is there anyway I can know my position on the Waiting List more precisely than upper or lower half?
No. We have found in the past that being more precise has created problems for both the medical school and the applicant."
http://medschool.umaryland.edu/admissions/faq.asp#33

Meanwhile, on the Application Process page it says... "Individuals who have been placed on the Wait List will be reviewed again after the completion of all interviews and will be notified of their ranking on that list. This usually occurs in late April."
http://medschool.umaryland.edu/admissions/appprocess.asp

Here is everything I want to know...

1. Does anybody happen to know how large the wait list generally is or how many applicants are generally accepted off the wait list?
2. Does anybody happen to know for what reason UMSoM does not post specific rankings for the wait list?
3. Does anybody have any other information that I didn't mention here?

Good luck to all of you!

All I know is that nobody got off the wait list last year

Great.... totally destroyed any last shred of hope I had for this school. BUT maybe this year things will be different. Oh well... May is almost here!

I know at least one person who got in last year from the WL, but there is usually not much movement. The WL is also huge, so if you are in the bottom half then your chances are not good.

Are you sure it's from last year? A current student just told me no one got off the WL last year... and that they had to ask some people if they can defer a year (which means some seats may be reserved deferred students this year).

It was a first year I met when I interviewed there. Perhaps they had gotten in from the wait list a previous year and then deferred, but I don't think that most schools will let you defer if you are accepted from the wait list.

Good to know... I just hope there is some waitlist movement this year!

Apparently they made 25 less acceptances than last year so there should be some WL movement

Withdrew my acceptance (IS).
Good luck to those waiting to hear back!!

Dean Foxwell spoke at my school and said that they accepted 300 people this year which was down from 325 last year

No, sorry! He said that they were just delayed because of all the snow days

Me either. They may hold off until closer to the May 15 deadline to see who is holding acceptances elsewhere before they rank the list

Got the letter! It says upper half of the waitlist! I'm not sure if that means upper half as in 158-296 or as in lower part of that.

I think that "upper" implies you are within the first group of people that will be considered (more highly ranked). Of course the letter would be sent out on a day that I won't be home until late 😛 Congrats on making the upper half though

i wish umd communicated via email. also does that mean there are ~300 ppl on the waitlist? that's a lot... also they interviewed more ppl than usual this year!

Got the letter today and I'm on the bottom half of the wait list 🙁

I just got the letter as well. Does everyone's letter say "You are one of those applicants we would like too see matriculate..." I feel like it is sent to everyone, but I wasn't sure.

My letter says Upper Half, but I dont know what that means? I feel like that may mean I have a higher position like 148 and up. They are so unclear! Especially because they say that they are taking the "first name on the list" does that mean we would want to be lower?

Mine says the same thing and I'm in the lower half

Lower half. Not bummed, but shocked about how little love they show in-state people. It's the only public med school in the state, you'd think they wouldn't even let OOS apply. Oh well, I couldn't possibly spend another four years in this dump of a city Baltimore anyway, in my four undergraduate years here, my house was broken into and my laptop was stolen, I was mugged during a snowstorm, an MTA bus ran a red light and wrecked my car, and a friend of mine was run over and killed by a comcast truck, the driver's 9th (?!?!) DUI. Gotta get out of here, I just don't have good luck here. Congrats to those accepted, hope you have better luck than me. Farewell Bodymore Murdaland, off to USUHS and the lush greens of Bethesda.

Lower half as well here. I don't mind cause I got several acceptances to higher ranked schools but I concur with everything you said. Baltimore is just like how HBO's The Wire portrays it. Sure, the real ghetto isn't where UMB's location is but it is close enough. The World Famous Lexington Market is more like a hunting ground for drug addicts/homeless people to mug people.

Lower half as well. IS. I just don't understand why they need to waitlist 300 people.

Hey everyone! To those of you who will also have the pleasure in joining me in UMDSOM's class of 2018 next year, if you are looking for a place to live I have rooms available in a townhouse literally across the street from campus (right across MLK boulevard). It is a five bedroom townhouse, three rooms are still available. Its really nice! Me and on of my guy friends (also rising med student) will be living there so co-ed friendly.

Its cheap, less that 700 per month, and its going to be clean because both him and I are clean freaks. Almost all of the appliances are new and my friend is making a bunch of renovations before school starts. There are leases available to start in July and August.

Anyways it would be awesome to live with other pre-med students.

Let me know!

Did any current Med students do PSP/ do they have any thoughts on it ?

If anyone gets off the waitlist or hears of any movement, please post a short message so those of us still waiting can get a sense if and when things move... Good luck if you are in limbo like me..

I heard of two people who got off the Maryland wait list since last Thursday so there evidently is some movement right now.

Best of luck. I was in the limbo state when I was applying too and it was by no means an easy feeling.

Are you a current student? When you applied were you top or bottom half of the list?

also, if i'm in the bottom half of the waitlist, is there a point in updating them with my spring semester grades...? in other words, is the top/half division set in stone?

Wondering this too. I have an acceptance elsewhere, but I really want to stay in state 🙁

Just talked to Admissions. Things have moved, will continue to move, and are entirely unpredictable. Do not read into any of the posts above saying it's bad news. Apparently one year they took nearly everybody off the wait list (because the year before they over booked and gave out less offers). The sense I got is you really have absolutely no idea. I have a friend who got off 3 days before class started. The woman I talked to just now said that this definitely happens from time to time. Otherwise, it's best just to sit tight and hope. Lots can happen in June and July.

Just got off the waitlist today there is hope! Interviewed mid feb, in state, 33 MCAT, 3.9 GPA
