2013-2014 University of Massachusetts Application Thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Went to a couple apartment complexes...Avalon Shrewsbury, Avalon Northborough and Haynes Farm in Shrewsbury. All of them are right off Rt. 9 and around 4-6 miles from campus. Definitely not walking distance. They are all in the $1300/month range for a 1 br/1 bath with a pool, gym, office space, etc. We really liked Haynes Farms and are definitely considering it for July.

just got an II here! my first one of this whole process so I am INSANELY happy!!!!
I got one last week too!--also my only II this cycle. (applying late was not the smartest decision I've ever made...though my MCAT verbal is pretty repulsive too haha.) Feeling thankful!

Anyone have a guess at how many spots are left/percentage of interviewers accepted?

I'm so tired of waiting haha...come on umass release the decisions! Do they reserve seats for applicants graduated form umass specifically? If so any clue how many they reserve?

The word from an MS1 I see occasionally is that UMass alumni comprise the largest share of the class (particularly UMass-Amherst). She thinks it's probably around 20% of the class. A not-so-distant second seems to be Tufts alumni. The rest is probably a mixed bag.

Ok that's not too bad...do you know how much apply from umass? Just trying to gauge our chances haha. The wait is apparently making me insane. I think I saw 2 umassers during my interview date.

I have no idea. I was the only one at my interview while everyone else was from [insert nationally recognized, prestigious, 100k even for English majors] University. I don't imagine it to be a small number since we're a big school, but who knows how many interview.

Is there any truth to the rumor that they interview all UMass grads?

Hahaha, i saw like harvard, duke, columbia, yale, brown...then there was me! Go Umass!

Same! I sat down and across from me was Harvard and Stanford, and next to me was Brown. I just kind of laughed to myself as I settled in...

Not likely. I imagine UMass grads comprise a pretty large portion of the applicant pool.

GAHHH! Received II on 12/17, interviewed on 1/23, accepted today!! This... this has to be a mistake!

Future applicants, if you don't hear from UMass for months after submitting, it apparently doesn't mean they aren't interested in you. I didn't get my II until 12/17 and still had an 8-day turn-around for my acceptance post-interview. Wow.

Awesome news! Congrats 🙂

Thanks!! Also, if anyone else from the 1/23 day gets in, PM me and introduce yourself! I was the woman who that one guy alleged was getting paid to be there.

Congrats!
That sounds funny, why did he think that??

Gratzi! stats if you don't mind? and when did you get the email?

Congrats!

Haha, you kind of had to be there, but... Applicants kept arriving and joining us in the little conference room where we congregate during the check-in time, and I kept greeting them as they walked in and directing their attention to the pile of nametags and other UMass goodies. Told one woman where she could stash her heavy coat. That kind of thing. One guy decided to give me a hard time about being helpful, haha.

@food2, the email came in at 11:08am. 35 MCAT, non-trad with 4.0 sGPA but a lower cGPA. UMass undergrad, but not Amherst.

Thanks! UMass your top choice? Congrats once again!

Thanks! UMass your top choice? Congrats once again!

I have a few schools tied for #1 right now, and UMass is definitely one of them. However, if the other schools give me money, I might... might turn down UMass. But man, it's hard to write that sentence. My very first post on SDN was basically "To hell with the other schools, how do I get into UMass Med?" I've been looking forward to this day for a long, long time. My boyfriend's on his way over with a cake to celebrate. 😀

Congrats to all the recently accepted!

Does any one know if the Pass / Fail for FOM1 and FOM2 is ranked or unranked?

So what does silence mean? I had an interview with UMass all the way in September but still have not heard back. Sent in numerous update letters and letters of intent setting UMass as my #1 school, but still nothing. I mean I would understand if they sent most of their acceptances later this year, but it seems like many of us are getting acceptances in the typical ~1 month post-interview. Is this a silent rejection?

A lot of acceptances go out in February and March, a few more in April and May. They go out later, and when you get accepted has little to do with whether or not they want you. They're just slow. I've heard a of stories of people interviewing early and only being accepted six months later, not because they were waitlisted, but because the adcoms just hadn't gotten to them yet. Have patience, grasshopper. When it comes to UMass, I wouldn't start worrying for a couple more months.

I realize a Friday isn't the best day to pose questions to current students, so I am reposting two questions today:

1.
Does any one know if the Pass / Fail for FOM1 and FOM2 is ranked or unranked?

2.
What is available in terms of research opportunities for MD students (especially a student that has ZERO prior research experience)? I know there is a Clinical Transitional Research Pathway (CTRP), but I am not positive on what it is or how it fits into the curriculum. Can CTRP align with the Capstone Scholarship & Discovery course if a student is interested in research?

Also, can the Capstone Scholarship & Discovery project be research oriented, even if a student has no research background?

Do you when most people hear back? I'm still functioning under the assumption that for the most part, a faster turn-around means they're more impressed by your application (because it makes sense that way)... but I could be completely wrong!

Seriously UMass? Rejected pre-II

3.98/37 with publication, tons of research, avg. clinical exposure, + some neat local to MA ECs.

Usually, I'd shrug off a rejection but this is a school that according to USNews interviews 63% of its in state candidates.

Whoa, I hope you've had luck elsewhere with stats like that.

Did you get the email today? I'm sorry to hear that, but hopefully you have other acceptances lined up making this a lesser blow 🙂

Any bets that they are sending out acceptances tomorrow?

Snow be damned, looks like UMass didn't cancel classes yesterday. I'm guessing this is typical. No problem, I'll just make sure to live within snow-shoeing distance. Any students care to comment? (Anybody wanna go halfsies on a team of sled dogs?)

I remember very few snow days out in Amherst. The mile walk to class and back made me a bit ornery.

Yeah, heard back today. I am just angry that after getting IIs to like WUSTL, BU, UVA, and CCLCM my own state school that interviews 65% of MA applicants straight up dumps me.

UMass works in weird ways...my best friends has a LizzyM of an 82 and he got rejected from umass...don't know how that happened, so don't take it too personally

Well, UMass is like a primary-care physician machine compared to those top research-oriented programs? So maybe they assumed you wouldn't do primary care? (Pure speculation on my part but maybe that's one way to rationalize it?)

Last year's SDN thread showed a bunch of kids with 36+ MCATs and excellent GPAs getting rejected post-interview.. Umass makes weird decisions. Shrug.

In 2013 UMASS had 7 students match into Derm, 7 into Anesthesiology, 3 Ortho, 2 Vascular, and one into each Neurosurgery and Plastics. I think its safe to say that UMASS is much, much more than just a primary-care physician machine. The sky is the limit, if you are so inclined.

Oh, and of course, UMASS helps produce top notch Primary Care Physicians.

Well the only students they will interview are those who meet residency requirements so that number might be a little skewed. I think a lot of people with high stats seem to get rejected right off the bat - it has got to be one of those "intangible" things. Sorry about that. It's clear you're doing well in general though!

No yeah, of course they're not opposed to students specializing in things other than primary care, nor can they control what students specialize in, but just by looking at their educational objectives on their website... (https://www.umassmed.edu/about/objective.aspx)
"The school is committed to training in the full range of medical disciplines, with an emphasis on practice in the primary care specialties, in the public sector and in underserved areas of Massachusetts."

Iono, just my two-cents. At the interview presentation they also emphasized their primary-care focus for their program; if you compare match lists from say, WashU, which has a notable research-heavy program compared to UMass at least, http://forums.studentdoctor.net/threads/2013-match-lists.991281/
There's definitely a higher proportion of students at UMass going to primary care vs. students from WashU going to primary care. There's probably a similar pattern with other research-focused programs.

I can see the logic, but UMass is also making significant gains in the research department, especially with a Nobel laureate on the gene therapy and RNAi team (see advanced therapeutics cluster).

I think it's fair to say that though we can speculate all we want, the inner workings of the UMASS adcom (or that of any school) will always be a mystery haha

+1, exactly. It's especially difficult to figure out a state school with only IS students and in a state with one of the highest MCAT scores and GPAs in the US. It seems like everyone that applies is insanely qualified..to the nth degree.

They do churn out a lot of PCPs, but their mission more generally is to churn out physicians for community practice in MA. Which, for those you who have interviewed, you may recall from one of their presentations.

Hi there! I'm a second-year and I'm happy to answer your questions. I posted for last year's applicants, too, so you may want to check out my previous posts for more info.
1) The Pass/Fail curriculum is unranked for both FOM1 and FOM2. You will find out the median, SD, and mean for each block exam in your second year (can't remember if we got that first year) so you at least have a sense of where you are in comparison to the rest of the class, but students are not ranked against each other.
2) There are tons of research opportunities even if you have no research experience. The CTRP is kind of intense; if you're interested in it, please try to get in touch with a current student in the pathway so you can learn more about it. The Capstone requirement does not apply to students in CTRP because CTRP students are required to complete a Senior Scholars project, which is similar but not the same.
3) Capstone can be WHATEVER you want, literally. There are so many different projects people are doing, it's totally up to you. If you want to do research, you can do research.

I'm going to add my 2 cents to this part.

Those places are pretty expensive and definitely not the places where most students live--more like attendings/professors. But if you have the income to do it, I guess that's ok!

Princeton Place and Plantation Ridge/Towers are the 2 complexes within walking distance (10-20 minutes depending) of campus. The rent for a 1 bedroom is typically around $1200, for 2 bedrooms about $1500, I believe. Those are expensive and they're large complexes. Not my style but lots of students do live there. Plantation has had some security problems with people's tires getting stolen off of their cars and then management tries to fine the car's owner (a resident in the complex).

There are many, many, many houses within a 10 minute walk of campus where medical students live, usually with 2-4 roommates per house. Some are condo-style with 2 units in one building, some are stand-alone houses. Most are quite nice (space, a yard, a driveway) and rent ranges from $400-$650/person/month depending on the number of roommates, amenities, and how close you are to campus. I used to live in much more expensive cities so this feels like a cheap rent dream! There are other places in the in-between range if you go a little further from campus, like Lincoln Street, further north on Plantation, further south on Lake Ave, up to the Greendale area, west on Belmont/Highland, downtown (Main Street--where American Hustle was filmed!), down Shrewsbury Street, down Franklin Street.

Some general points:

-Wait until May or June to sign a lease. There will be flurries of emails to your umass email address starting in May and continuing to June--from landlords and from students moving out of places. There is also an accepted students spreadsheet for finding roommates. In MA, rental season is usually June-September and that is true in Worcester as well; you'll have more and better options if you wait until the summer.
-Shrewsbury is usually much more expensive than Worcester, even if you're only going over to the other side of Lake Quinsig.
-You will need a car to live in Worcester, unfortunately. There is very limited public transportation. I live about 3 minutes by foot from school so I only need to drive a few times a week, but it's pretty key for getting around town.
-Parking on campus is about $280/year (I think) for first- and second-year med students.

Let me know if you have any other questions! I *love* UMass and coming here was one of the best decisions I've ever made.

Sooo I interviewed months ago and still haven't heard anything... I'm at least finding solidarity that others are in the same position. For current students reading this thread, were any of you accepted after waiting 3+ months?

In the same boat. I interviewed over 4 months ago now. I've given up even trying to guess when I'll hear back. What a crazy system...
