2013-2014 University of Minnesota Application Thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Are there any current UMN students who can speak to the responsiveness of professors, the ease with which you can form connections with the professors/physicians, and how much of a community feel there is here? Also, do you get a mentor? Thanks in advance!

Alright guys I haven't officially withdrawn my acceptance but I'm 95% sure I will within the next week or so. Good luck to everyone who has been accepted and on the waitlist!

MS1 here. I would say most of our professors are pretty responsive. They respond fairly quickly to questions via email. Some even give out their phone number just in case you have a burning question (seriously).

Making connections with professors/physicians is fairly easy as well. The school has a "Craigslist" type website for research opportunities for medical students and we constantly get emails about shadowing opportunities, etc. The school's alumni foundation just hosted this past week a happy hour for first years where they were able to meet alums from the medical school.

Even though I go to a big university medical school, I still get that smaller community feel. Having all the same classes and smaller group sessions helps with that. We are also a very non-competitive class that shares notes/flash cards/study aides constantly to help each other study.

As for the mentor, we are all assigned a faculty advisor (physician) that is with us until we graduate. We usually meet with them 1:1 and in a small group at least 1-2 times a semester. They can be really helpful when it comes to finding research or shadowing opportunities.

Hope this helps!

Thank you so much for your thorough and extremely helpful response! Your response has definitely helped me with my decision making.

Theresa Baultrippe, the Director of Admissions, is coming to my school this Wednesday to give a presentation for MN residents applying this upcoming cycle and she is also setting aside time for some one-on-one appointments with students. I applied this past cycle and am on the wait list, so I was wondering if this would be an appropriate time to seek some feedback on my application/interview?

Haha I was in almost the exact same position last year. Waitlisted, Theresa came to my school to give a presentation, went to go see/talk to her, etc. Last year, their policy was absolutely no feedback on application and interview until you withdraw from the waitlist, and I haven't heard of that changing. You can ask her about what you think your weaknesses were and how to improve your chances, but I highly doubt she will come prepared with feedback for specific applicants.

Yeah that's basically what happened haha. She did tell me that the wait list rankings should be released by the end of this week or next week, though.

Just accepted off the waitlist today at Duluth! It's my first acceptance so I am AMPED!!!!!! Also, I was on the second tier of the waitlist (21-32), so it is moving a little more than usual compared to other years. Keep up the faith for those still waiting to hear.

The alternate list (for TC campus) hotline was last updated May 28. It says that it will only change when changes are made. As of now, the original 27 is now #1 and the following numbers have withdrawn their application: 28, 37, 51, 68, 69, 74, 77, 79, 93, and others. I'm 84, so I stopped listening after that 93.

Its moved quite a fair bit this year, surprisingly. Hopefully it moves quite a bit over the next couple weeks ):
Yeah, seemed like last year sucked, but the year before that people said it got to 50+ on SDN too, if I remember correctly.

Also, I'm sorry, I realized the 50-75 was for another school I'm waitlisted at. However, the number was thrown around frequently on SDN (except for during the last cycle)

Anybody know whether the "average" of 50-75 includes the starting rank? In other words, if 1-21 are in at the start, does that mean they actually accepted 29-54, or would it be 71-91?

I think that 50-75 number is the rank of the last accepted person? As in the rank they were given on the waitlist email? I believe in 2012 they got to around 56 or something, and in 2011 they went to 71.
