2013-2014 University of Rochester Application Thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Very excited to interview here!

Is anyone else curious about this mysterious group discussion? If they did it last year, any input on what it is like? It actually sounds kind of fun, except the vision it gives me of one way mirrors with admissions committees analyzing our every move like lab rats and placing bets on who will make the cut...

I'm very interested as well. It's at least a good chance to meet potential fellow classmates. I just hope my group doesn't try to one-up each other or something silly.

Do you guys think choosing to leave early on the interview day would have any negative effect on the admission decision?

Just glancing through this thread as an applicant from last year, and I can tell you that the group discussion is odd only because it seems to serve no purpose. We all sat around a big table and talked to each other about movies, music, food, and other common things. Then it was over. Relaxed, but I'm sure somebody is scrutinizing the answers.

Sounds like it's mostly an opportunity to get to know potential classmates. Making sure we "play well with others." From what I'm reading it doesn't sound like interviews are designed to be stressful.

That feel when your complete date has been passed over. 🙁

Everyone here seems to be really concerned by this. Maybe I am naive for not being that worked up, but the process is complicated and I doubt its so linear and chronological as we would imagine.

Thank you! sorry for not posting originally! MCAT 35, GPA > 3.9.

Anybody know if Rochester screens pre-secondary?

Has anyone found out anything further about the possibility of student hosts? My interview date is pretty early, so I'm wondering whether or not this is a possibility.

Nothing here. Probably just going to hotel it up for my 8/26 interview

Is there a shuttle from the airport or are people planning to take a cab?

Does anyone know the best hotel to stay at for the interview in terms of proximity? The provided list has quite a few options, I'd like to narrow it down a bit if possible.

Staybridge Suites isn't in the best part of town but it is in walking distance... or a short cab ride if you don't want to get mugged

Staybridge Suites is the most convenient place to stay. As long as you don't walk around alone at night, you'll be fine. A lot of undergrads live around that area, and most make it out alive.

Thanks guys, hoping to book soon. If anyone else has any ideas, feel free to continue the discussion.

Also - and I apologize for double posting - is there a place at the medical school that we can keep a small amount of luggage (carry on bag). I know that wherever we stay we will probably need to check out the morning of the interview, but I do not want to look unprofessional walking into the admissions office with a bag.

Hey, I am renting a car at the airport. I definitely wouldn't mind helping you out with a ride if you want to chip in a few dollars. We could do dinner that night as well and maybe get some more interviewees to meet up. I don't think they have a student social that night. At least I couldn't find anything about it on their website.

That works for me. I'll PM you.

Yes, the confirmation email that I got earlier today states that there is space to store your luggage!

Hope to see some of you next Monday!!!

I can't believe how soon this is! I'm looking forward to meeting everyone.

Please briefly list your four (4) most significant extra-curricular/volunteer experiences (add one at a time).

For this question, is it proper to discuss a work activity that is extra-curricular?

What about research that is volunteer?

The way this question is worded, almost seems that they only want volunteer experiences.

I used my three most important experiences on the AMCAS (extracurricular organization, volunteer work, research, plus my involvement in tennis). I'd say you're good with anything that's not class work.

When people mentioned that the neighborhood isn't safe? Just how bad is it?

Is it comparable/as notorious to the "south" side of Chicago or "east" LA? or much better?

Are they going to send out their rejection letters soon?

Then again, we are still too early in the cycle....

Depends... On a million factors whether that's true or not. I should say I hope to hear something either way soon.

Yeah that was me trying to be optimistic. I hope the first week of September is the golden week!

Is there a status page? Or do they just email rejections and iis

I had a very positive experience interviewing at Rochester this week. They did an excellent job of making you feel welcome and relaxed for interviews. Very intrigued and excited by their humanities electives.

All communication I have received has been primarily through email.

Hey SDN,

If anyone else is interviewing November 4th and lives on the east coast between Philadelphia and Rochester, I'm renting a car to drive up Sunday and drive back down Monday evening. PM me if you'd like to join in.

YAY!

Is it too late to send an in the area email for next week? I just got an II from Buffalo, and they only gave me a week's notice.

Hi everyone, I submitted my essay questions for the interview this past weekend for an upcoming interview on Monday. However, when I went into the system this morning to check something, the essay questions have not been submitted!!!

The rules state that the essays are to be submitted 1 week prior to the interview... And I can't submit until after work because I am in the clinic today! I literally had to run out the door when I saw that it wasn't submitted... I might be able to submit around lunch time if I have tome to run to drive home, since I don't have the essays here at work...

I am really worried, someone please let me know what you think I should do. Should I send an email to admissions? I don't want to sound like I am making excuses. Should I just re-submit the essays and let them ask me when the time comes? I don't want to seem disrespectful or like I don't care.

Do you think this will affect my chances? I'm devastated and don't know how this happened!

Thanks for any advice,
C

Calm down. Send them a polite email ASAP explaining that you submitted over the weekend, but now the essays aren't appearing in the system. Ask if they have received them or if you should resend. Apologize for the inconvenience but don't act like you've done anything wrong, because you haven't. I very much doubt this will affect your chances.

How long does it usually take to hear back from these guys. I submitted two weeks ago and still haven't heard back.

I submitted/ was complete July 24th and still haven't heard anything... so yeah. Two weeks is probably nothing to worry over haha.

Rochester seems to be pretty quiet since that huge rush back in August. I want to hear some news!!!
