2013-2014 University of Southern California (Keck) Application Thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Just got a rejection today.
I thought I had solid stats.
3.46 gpa , 36 MCAT
Mph degree with 3.9 grad GPA.
My mph is actually from USC.
Any one have ideas why they rejected?
Don't they usually wait till later on in the cycle to send out rejections?
Any help would be appreciated.
when were you complete?

Primary verified 8/1.
recieved secondary 8/1.
secondary complete 8/4

So has no one else had a week delay between AMCAS verification of primary (when school receives) and any communication from USC? Worried I somehow missed an email, though not sure how as my email has no filters on it. Worth contacting them?

-ps sorry about the rejection....

Sorry if this seems like a dumb question, but I tend to overthink these type of questions. What do you guys think they want to know here:

Have you indicated that you represent a group that is Underrepresented in Medicine? If yes, what does this designation mean to you?

do they want to know what being a URM means to me? do they want to know what representing the URM means to me?

thanks.

I answered both questions, but I mostly elaborated on the second. I was kinda confused by what they wanted there too, but I guess they liked my answer. Good luck!

just submitted my secondary...im worried im going to be rejected off the bat. My 3-5 sentence answers were actually longer than my how will you be remembered question. I think i just write really long and dense sentences. I hope it isn't a very hard limit or anything.

I don't think there's a hard limit. Don't worry about it too much. USC seems like the kind of school that is really into "getting to know you" and wants you to be fun/unique (at least that's my interpretation), so I think thats their secondary emphasis rather than the actual length etc.

What exactly are they getting at with the nickname prompt? Are they looking for something silly/fun and creative or something like "Matt" instead of "Matthew"?

It seems pretty clear that they're looking for something along the lines of a fun/silly/creative nickname but I just want to double check with you all before I go and make myself look like a clown, haha.

It threw me off guard after doing some of the other secondaries, but I like it! These questions are short, to the point, and allow me to show a side of myself that's not just regurgitated AMCAS application information.

Definitely not something like "matt" - although that might still work if the person reading your app is into deadpan jokes 😀

Good news = interview invite

No news = no interview invite 🙄

I'm expecting a rejection at this point. USC clearly has no taste 😛

I am sure you will be just fine. Judging by your MDApp, you are having an amazing cycle! Plus, it seems like USC already sent out quite some rejections already, given you completed pretty early, I am sure you are still in the running haha.

Yay interview invite! Considering it's from my dream school after a really terrible month I'm happy for the first time in a while 🙂

3.8/36/IS/Complete 8/12

I love this school. I loved writing these secondaries.
And I would love to have an interview invite.

If only refreshing the status page over and over again would magically grant me an II.

Anyone know if USC reads all apps? Given how quickly they reject people (over on last years thread people were getting rejected 2 or 3 days after completion! Some before letters had even made their way over), you have to wonder if they are a school which runs the numbers prior to even reading? I'm sure its been discussed, but has there been a consensus made here on whether they do the math before reading?

Interview invite today! My first one 🙂

I cant find a solid trend from the small sample size of posters here. You get folks getting IIs within a week, others rejected within daya, and the rest of us going insane waiting 😀

I've been under review since 8/2, or maybe they forgot to send me sad news to give me hope

I'm on the waiting boat as well..nothing but eBay ads and crickets in my inbox. All the silence can be disheartening especially when you see a bunch of people getting multiple IIs already..makes me feel like a cookie cutter applicant

Hey there's room for us on the baking sheet! Okay, bad joke. But seriously, hang in there. Eventually we'll get a break.

You're right 🙂 I guess that's just the way the cookie crumbles..

Rejected yesterday around noon post-secondary.

Reapplicant, 3.7/33, focus on minority/underserved medicine

AMCAS submitted 7/1, verified 8/15, secondary received 8/15 and submitted 8/20.

I have a super weird question....

does anyone know if your pre-med committee letter counts as a science letter? I have two from past science professors but I was curious if this one would count as science.

complete 9/9
31/3.95/CA

fingers crossed for everybody here!

I wrote: I'd like to be called "Mr. Clutch", bc with a nickname like that, people will think, "now that's a guy we can count on"..

I sort of went Jack Handy-esq... It made me smile, and all the rest of my answers were serious.

yes, most medical schools will accept your pre med committee letter in place of the individual letter requirement. So for example, if a school requires one science letters and one non-science, the committee letter will cover both you can send additional letter if you choose to, but they will be done individually. Don't worry, I was similarly freaked out when I submitted everything and found out I didn't have a science LOR, and I've gotten three interview invites already.

it looks like they passed my completion date (8/4). silent rejection? =(

please. try completing in mid July. haha and they don't do silent rejections. They've already sent out plenty of rejections.

Hi everyone, for those who are interviewing soon, I'm a first year at Keck, and while I'm still new to the actual experience of med school, I can at least illuminate you on the interview experience and other general things about the school. Feel free to PM me!

Rejected today with 3.84/32. You win some you lose some ; )
Edit: complete 7/27

Also rejected, complete 8/1. My MCAT wasn't helping my cause

Is USC pretty delayed this year with IIs?

Seems as if last year a bunch of IIs were going out by now and even some interviews occurring. This year, it seems that the first interviews are in Oct and now the calendar for scheduling is already in December.

It was mentioned earlier that the admin building went under renovation so that might be why... I just want an II from here. T.T

Woohoo first interview invite!!

There's only 3 dates in January available when I went to sign up...are they planning on opening up more dates later in the spring?

Verified: 8/10, Secondary Submitted: 8/16, Complete: 9/10

35/3.84/IS

Congratulations! I can't believe USC is already on January dates. 😱

:scared: What does it mean to be completed in mid-July and not hear a word since?! haha. People completed after me are both getting invited and rejected...

I have no idea what it means but let me know if you figure it out 🙂 You are not alone!
