2013-2014 University of Southern California (Keck) Application Thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
I will most likely be matriculating here assuming i don't receive some miraculous crazy scholarship somewhere else. It has always been a dream school. LAC-hospital is such an amazing place to learn and be trained. + great school, students and staff seem pleasant, great reputation, BIG ON SPORTS!, and only an hour from home (I have a huge family and we are all very close, they are all in fact posting on facebook about my acceptance here haha it was everyones desire for me to stay in so cal.)
So excited! 🙂🙂🙂🙂
hey man USC is definitely up on my list of med schools as well! I absolutely loved my visit and I hope to see you there next year! by the way, were you the only other guy in the morning interview? still trying to figure out if i met you during the interview lol

Alternate list... KNEW I should have sent that thank you note!

All jokes aside, I'm pretty bummed.
ahhhh lame i'm so bummed to hear this! at least hope is still alive! did the email say if they have different ranks on their wait list?

Unranked, and they won't accept updates until after May 15th. Zero love this week. I can cook and clean if anyone needs live-in assistance... 😎

🙁 keep your chin up! i've been reading admissions stats religiously and usc really doesn't interview a lot of applicants at all, and that sets the wait list up for a lot of movement later on! pulling for ya!!!

Haha ya that was me man I remember you, Skab and I go back a long way, all the way back to GW interview lol.
Just like he said though they accept a significant amount of the people they interview! Let me know when you get in somewhere I'm excited to hear good news for you.!

Hello!

Quick question. Does anyone know the last interview date available? I received my secondary just last week and I'm planning to submit it this week. Trying to figure if I have a legitimate shot for an interview.

Thank you!

So....I've been complete since August 21 and I still haven't heard back....and now it seems as if they are past January interview dates. Do I realistically have a shot at still landing an interview or do you guys think I got passed over?

Don't give up yet until that rejection email.

Front other threads, you could interview late and still land an acceptance.

Sent from my phone.

Secondary Complete on 7/10 and I haven't been rejected yet.

Is there anything I can do at this point to increases my chances of an interview?

Congrats to all those acceptances out there! We're going to be doctors!!!

can any current student comment on where most of the students look for housing? does anyone know a lot about the pasadena area and whether or not that may be too far of a commute?

It's about a twenty min drive from Pasadena, my dad works in Pasadena and I know the area fairly well. I'm also looking for housing options. But hopefully moving closer then Pasadena

thanks man what areas do you think would be the most convenient? i have no knowledge about the area...

Might be time for an update letter/letter of interest seeing that USC is probably on Jan/Feb dates now and all this silence ...

A lot of students seem to live in Alhambra, Monterey Park, and Pasadena. Some of them live in a gated apartment complex about a mile from school. The area around the school isn't the greatest. A couple of students were living in Los Feliz and a couple more in Culver City, which seemed pretty far from campus. LAX isn't too far from Culver City, and the drive from there to campus was a good 40 minutes, with traffic not so bad. I can't imagine commuting with the morning or evening commute that distance even using all surface streets.[

The area surrounding the campus of USC is arguably the worst in los Angeles and probably ranks among the worse nationally. Although there has been a lot of recent development, it is stilled considered ghetto and very unsafe. Last year 2 students got shot and killed a few blocks off campus and a meth house was discovered one block from campus.

So you wanna live as far away from campus as you can given the ridiculous LA traffic. Pasadena is awesome!

The shooting occurred a mile away from the undergraduate campus which is 7 miles away from the Keck campus.

Is USC receptive to update letters?

Waitlisted...interviewed within the past few weeks--they must have not liked me.

My interviewer talked the whole time and we barely hit any parts of my application...They like to tout closed file interviews... but it's not that great

Waiting until May really sucks too...

When did you interview?

ACCEPTED!

Interviewed 10/11.

It's gonna be tough going from being Fightin' Irish to a Trojan but I think I'll manage 🙂

Interviewing here tomorrow... for those who have already interviewed, how was parking on campus? was the admissions office easy to find?

and lastly, any tips on the interviews? Thanks!

This thread makes me so sad... I think I'm unsubscribing until May.🙁

hey there, i rented a car and drove to campus, there is a garage literally 20 feet from the admissions building. I walked around for like 30 mins looking for it, felt like an idiot haha.

parking was around 9-12$ for the entire day, definitely reasonable

Looking at the MSAR, USC's average debt seems abnormally high (Over 200k). Most comparable schools are around 150k

Does anyone know USC's financial aid policy? I didn't stay for that presentation

I stayed. The keyword was "loans". Entering scholarships are extremely rare. Some scholarships(which you have to apply) are available to MS2-4. The 200K aren't out of nowhere. But you know what, Keck students are still happy. I guess they forgot about all those loans.

Hah I actually did the same thing... Got there early and parked in the garage, walked in circles for 15 min looking for the admissions building lol. Also felt like a ***** ha ha.

I live on the border of South Pasadena/Alhambra and I need to leave by 7:25 in order to get class by 8. Someone mentioned 20 minutes from Pasadena, but I think its realistically closer to 40-45 minutes if you factor in the morning traffic in that area.

I think about 1/4 of my class lives in City View, which is a 10 minute walk from campus. Its not a great area, but lot of people like living walking distance to school and with a lot of other students.

Everyone else seems to be spread out everywhere else. Monterey hills, Monterey park, Alhambra, Pasadena, downtown, Korea Town, Silver lake, Los Feliz... etc.

Hey Guys,

Been complete since 9/15 and haven't heard anything back. I'm currently in a Master's program and getting really good grades, do you think it would help to have my graduate advisor send in a letter of rec. with my current grades?

glad it wasn't just me

I can verify this. Entering scholarships are indeed extremely rare (but are quite generous). I believe that the debt burden is comparable to that of most other private schools, though there are several exceptions.

Don't worry though, the sunshine will make you forget about all those silly loans in no time 😉

Interview Invite!!! In-state Complete 10/13/13 (they were super fast). Scheduled for Jan 22 (dang, that's hella far out there). Super excited to interview here!!!
