2013-2014 University of Southern California (Keck) Application Thread

So I've been hearing the Keck is a reject-happy school in the sense that it rejects pretty continuously throughout the cycle? I'm just worried I've been passed over because I submitted the secondary on 8/21 and still no word...what's up with people complete way after me getting invites? Can anyone explain this?

I think schools will put your application back in the pile if they can't make a decision right away. They have probably looked over your application, but couldn't decide one way or another whether to reject or send you an II, so they decided to put it off and review it again with the next batch. Then this continues until they do reach a decision. Sometimes it takes an extra couple weeks, and sometimes you won't hear anything back for a few months.

can any current student comment on the MD/MPH program?

Rejected today, complete Early Aug, Top Choice and Alma Meter :/

Is USC receptive to letters of interest pre-interview?
i don't think keck is receptive to anything, especially pre-interview. they specifically told us during the interview not to send any updates nor any LOI's before may 15 if we were placed on the WL, so I highly doubt they will consider anything pre-interview

How do these 'in the area' emails work? I will be in Cali in January and figured maybe I should send one to USC. Is it worth a shot?

Did they give you a response to that email?
i'm pretty sure they won't be receptive to it. they made it very clear that they really consider whether or not an applicant will be a good fit for the school, hence the reason why they don't give very many interview invites to begin with. That being said, once you do get an interview, you have a very very good shot at being accepted. If keck likes you they would have extended an invite for you, but whether or not you are in the area will probably not sway their decision. overall, i think the bottom line with keck is that you just have to sit and wait and just let them do all the work.

Is it known how many interviews USC give out vs how many it accepts? I couldn't find that anywhere.

Can't believe I had an interview scheduled for today (I cancelled last week). I would have been at LAX today... Hope all the interviewees today are safe and didn't spend too long stuck at the airport.

Most recent available stats:

In State:

Applied: 3709
Interviewed: 417
Accepted: 260
Enrolled: 138

hmm, I like those odds. Just wish my interview wasn't so far away, I'm super excited for the chance to come here!

Yeah I was supposed to be at LAX for an Albany interview I rescheduled. Scary :/

Can someone remind me if they were going to email us or snail mail their decision? I don't remember what they told us!

Congrats to everyone getting accepted!

I think it's worth a shot. I know people whose interviews were moved up because the admissions office knew they lived in LA, so it doesn't hurt to let them know.

you'll get an email followed by a letter signed by Dr. Arias in the mail. also, if you log on to the secondary app site, an offer letter tab will be right next to your interview tab, and that's where you'll accept or decline the offer. just fyi you need to respond within 5 days so be quick about it! good luck!

How would one go about notifying them? I live about an hour away from LA.. and I know that if someone drops their interview a few days before the interview date, sometimes the spot is offered to somebody who is local. Do you have to notify them that you live nearby or do they just go by the information provided in your AMCAS primary app? I'm assuming it's the latter... This is one of my top schools, if not my #1, so I want to make sure I am covering all my bases.

any decisions come out lately? (post-interview)

Any news guys? I interviewed very late October.. And I'm really hoping I hear back from USC cause I have 2 interviews in the east coast in early December where I'm really hoping I don't have to spend the money to go...

I interviewed in late October and the wait is killing me lol

Wait, cookies? Oh man, now I'm really bummed I have to wait til Jan 🙁

Anyone received interview invitations recently? Seems like the thread has been silent on those for a long time.

Interviewed mid-October as well. Not a peep from them yet...

I know right?? Which ones did you have? The ones I are had lemon creme filling ... I wanna know what they are called.. Lol

I had one of each... My table was being shy about eating them! So I had a lemon one, a chocolate chip, and a oatmeal. I wonder of you can get those as a student...

To make sure, they did say 2-5 weeks, correct?
And that if we had not heard back from them by week 5 that we should contact them?

Maybe they didn't like any of us October interviewees! Lol. Hang in there guys!

Dayum, it's all about the chocolate chip cookies. I want to hear back so bad! I've been checking this threat incessantly D: LET ME IN, KECK. PLEASE.

arrgh. I just logged in to my secondary application and noticed I clicked "yes" to: Have you ever applied, been accepted, or matriculated to any medical school (M.D., D.O., international)? If yes, tell us about your previous cycle(s).

In the explanation box I wrote "not applicable" though. Do you guys think this is a big issue? I'm a first time applicant.

Omg hahaha. I actually did the same thing, except I wrote "no" in the box, which can be horrible if they think I'm just refusing to explain smh. Should I call in?

I don't think it's a big deal for you, since you wrote "not applicable". They'll understand.

Hmmm, maybe the fact that we wrote something in the box made it automatically click "yes"?

Nope, though I'm sure hoping to start seeing them pop on here soon! Comp 10/20

Same, I was complete late August and I still haven't heard a word....assuming silent rejection? 🙁

Early/mid July here....lol but they have been rejecting people here and there. So I'd think that if they don't want you, they'd reject you without hesitation. However, they haven't seem to send out mass waves of rejections like they did in previous years yet, who knows, maybe they did and people just didnt report it. I have no idea.

Spoke with financial aid today, just wanted to get some info on the award packages, fafsa and other required document dates etc. The fin aid counselor mentioned that M2, M3, and M4 students can receive merit based schoalrships. Does anyone here know how easy / difficult it is to receive these scholarships, and or typical amounts?
Thank you!
