2013-2014 University of Southern California (Keck) Application Thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
just checked and it seems that I did the same thing also, although I'm almost positive I had checked "no" originally...maybe this is a glitch? seems a bit coincidental!

I posted the exact same thing a couple weeks ago. Thank god it wasn't only me... maybe it was a glitch. 3 people doing it is too much of a coincidence.

Alternate List, interviewed 10/30. It's going to be a long six months.

Congratulations to everyone who has been accepted! Two of my best friends went to Keck and absolutely loved it. Felt that the training they received was top notch and have since matched into very competitive residencies.

Still crossing my fingers that I'll get an II!

A little late, but:

SR: 10/14
II: 10/23

interviewing late january.

Accepted!! Interviewed mid-October. OOS. I loved it and USC is now one of my top choices. If only tuition were lower and scholarships more available...

Hang in there! From what I've seen, USC is trigger happy when it comes to rejections, so no news is good news!
I hope this is the case. I submitted my secondary mid-August and haven't heard back

Alternate List... Interview mid Oct. :/

Anyone have an idea how much movement off the Alternate List there is??

I've heard there's quite a bit, but it's unranked. Basically they consider everyone on the Alternate List qualified for admission but use it to fill out the class with the demographics/type of candidate they're looking for. They're looking for a balanced class, essentially. It's hard to say whether any one of us individually has a decent chance or not of getting accepted, but at least there is a chance. At the very least, we beat out thousands of other applicants to get where we are. IIRC, the Dean basically said the best time to send an LOI/update is in May, which is when they start pulling people off the list. So, in the meantime, just be patient and good luck.

II 11/19. Secondary submitted Oct 3rd! Super stoked for this one 🙂

hmmm complete 8/4, IS, no word at all. I want to send an update, but the general consensus seems to not do it.. :/

I am also really itching to send one. The "contact us" page is pretty clear about not sending them though. However, I do think my updates are pretty significant.

I think the problem is that everyone thinks their updates are significant. If they specifically ask that you do not send updates, I wouldn't chance it.

Unless, of course, you were recently published in Nature. Otherwise, no, I wouldn't do it.

My impression is that sending an update wouldn't hurt you. I would imagine they would just assume you didn't see their policy on updates and through it in the trash.

During interview day, we were specifically told not to send updates short of a Nature publication. Does this apply to the pre-interview stage? Maybe, maybe not. But, nowhere on the website could I find that they were responsive to updates, which some schools are. It's ultimately your choice, but I wouldn't do it. They already have a general picture of you based on your AMCAS and (just as importantly) your secondary responses.

If a school says not to send updates, they mean it. If they say it, they cannot consider updates sent by anybody or else they would have to consider updates sent by everybody to be fair, so the best outcome is that they ignore it. However, the worst outcome is that it hurts your application because it reflects negatively upon you -- you can't follow rules, you think you're too special for rules, or you are too lazy to read instructions for a life-path-determining process.

Risk:Benefit --> unfavorable

This +1000. If they say don't send anything, then don't send anything. Besides, it keeps you from blowing your load too early. That way you can write the strong LOI possible, assuming you're still interested when May rolls around. No one likes premature load blowing.

What you did there, I see it 😀😀

Any other MD/PhD applicants in here? I've been complete since 9/21 and haven't heard anything back. Anyone else in this boat?

Can anyone say or even guess what percentage of applicants they have actively rejected at this point?

Does anyone have a December interview? Just curious because I heard the office is closed/not conducting interviews for at least the latter half of December, wondering what the cutoff date is. I guess it's good news for people with interviews later in the season because it means not that many other people are being interviewed between now and then.
