2014-2015 Albert Einstein College of Medicine of Yeshiva University Application Thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
I'm interviewing soon; any last minute tips? Also, does anyone who interviewed recently know about how long it will be until they release decisions?

Everyone is nice. My interviewer was off campus so i took the shuttle from einsten and arrived 15 mins late due to traffic and he was fine with it. He knew my application pretty well. A few tough questions here and there which is why I feel I did not do as well but just be yourself and be happy and excited to be there. They give you a folder which has a list of the cool and unique things about Einstein so I would definitely recommend perusing through the folder.

I was lucky to have a morning interview because if you have afternoon you will have to wait until after lunch for your interview. And so some students will be done and relieved while others are going to be anxious.

Really no secret formula especially based on how recent acceptances have been going out.

From an MS1 friend: "Einstein accepts students who really want to go there"

Good luck!!

I told my interviewer pretty much that.

holy cow I wonder when I'll hear. wasn't expecting it to be so soon. this is scary

I'm freaking terrified. I wonder if only certain people are hearing back due to their interviewers getting back to the adcom quickly.

High Priority as well! I know its a waitlist, but the lack of the actual word "waitlist" makes me feel better for some reason lol. (in the email, anyways)

People from my interview day all heard back like a month ago (one of the reasons I was convinced I was rejected!) so no worries if you don't hear back immediately. I'm definitely considering it now that it's a possibility. Keeping my fingers crossed for you!

Fingers crossed. I'm so happy for you though. I know your interview was less than optimal. Guess they still liked you!

I just got on HP today, interviewed early september! (SUCH A LONG WAIT) LM 72. So confused about how happy and excited to be right now!

HP Waitlist too earlier today. Interview in December. I don't think we have much to worry about, I've heard great things about HPW here from my interview day. I'm planning on sending in a letter of update soon and a letter of intent later on the season because I really loved this place. Congrats to those accepted!

anyone have advice on applying for the service and research scholarship??

I was recently put on the HP waitlist as well. I am not as familiar with the waitlist situation; what is the first day we could expect to see movement (i.e. acceptances) from the waitlist? May 1st?

I just got waitlisted (MD/PhD) today (interviewed in November). Does anyone by any chance know about the amount of waitlist movement for the MD/PhD program at Einstein? I really want to get in and was just curious about my chances!

Was it just me, or did they downplay the Jeiwsh character of the school during interview day?

It's no longer part of YU. also question (if anyone wants to speculate) - will they continue to attract and enroll orthodox students as part of Montefiore? I know Einstein was the medical school for YU and observant students a few decades ago, but will they continue to draw from YU for their class?

disclaimer: I don't go to Yeshiva.

From visiting there, I think its more likely that observant Jews go to Yeshiva because of the Jewish resources available, not because the school courts them. That's why they don't talk about it on interview day; they're not trying to court specifically Jewish applicants.

What happens is that Jewish kids go there anyway. There's a kosher dining hall nearby and a temple in the dorms. Contrast that to every other school/hospital in the country that has predominantly (or completely) non-kosher food and non-denominational worship centers all over the place. They also have a Chabad just for the medical school. I'm not particularly observant, but I can see the draw. Its hard to understand the minority experience if you've never identified with it, but it feels really comfortable not to be marked (anthro term). I imagine that observant Jewish students don't feel marked at Einstein, and that's quite a draw.

Kind of had a similar experience, but it was more to highlight their diverse class (compared to other places I applied).

Hey guys, I am an international student (from Canada) and I received an II recently. I booked my interview for April 20, but I am not sure if it will be worth travelling there since the interview is so late in the cycle. Do you have any advice for me? Please help! Thank you.

+2 wondering if this is meant to include mini entries for multiple positions or a more cohesive piece ~to personal statement

"Applicants invited for an interview will meet with a member of the admissions committee. Because approximately 1,000 applicants are interviewed every year, the lag time between M.D. candidates being invited for an interview and the actual interview may be as long as two months. We regret any inconvenience this delay may cause applicants, but we assure you that even if your interview takes place in April, we will have a spot for you if your application is rated highly by the Admissions Committee."

I feel like this is true because Einstein does a good amount of post-II rejections as opposed to other schools that seem to do a lot of post-II wait list/deferrals.

Einstein seems to make a point to use a lot of active learning measures in the first two years. (including case based learning) Is this fairly common amongst med-schools?

Most medical schools either are switching or have switched to a more integrated pre-clinical curriculum over the past few years, but I still think Einstein's is great because (according to the students) the P/F comes with the perks of no internal ranking whatsoever, and the research opportunities are so accessible, but again this is a personal preference along with other factors that make Einstein my top choice.

Thanks! I read that, but I was hoping to know what the chances would be being an international student, and interviewing sooo late in the cycle. Are there any internationals on here who got accepted yet?

How much of your personal statement is it okay to cover if they ask you the "why medicine?" question?

I think it's better to limit your answer to two minutes. Paraphrasing from your PS is probably fine but you don't want to mention "As I wrote in my PS,...." Your interviewer may not even have read your entire file so this may put them at unease. Just answer as if they know nothing and make sure it's a good reason for why medicine and it matches with what you wrote on your app. Good luck.

Sounds good, thanks for the feedback!

Also, does Einstein do open file interviews?

I always say something like "Well, not to totally repeat my personal statement" and discuss some of the reasons i touched on in my PS but add a new spin to it.

A couple of my interviews were "open file" but it was obvious the interviewer didn't read anything in it lol including Einstein

So I submitted my Technical Standards form and Acceptance form the day I received the email, but what about Certiphi? I already released that report before in early January, do I have to do it again?

Also, would the adcom notify you if your place has been forfeited from the class? (a little scared because I did submit the TS form, just not sure if it went through).

You only receive the Certiphi email once. Not sure about the rest, though!

Seriously? Why wouldn't you just call the office if you were concerned?
I received a confirmation email about my acceptance acknowledgement, but didn't receive one for the TS form (not sure if they send out acknowledgements for those)

I didn't get one either, FWIW
Phew! Alright then, haha the reason I never called was because I assumed the acceptance acknowledgement email was enough but then for some reason wondered if the TS should've came back as well. Thanks!

Hey guys,

I just started to fill out the CSS profile for Einstein. Einstein is the only CSS requiring school I have. It only asked for my student income data.
I thought it was weird so I called the fin aid office and they were MAD surprised because that should not happen for applicants under 26 yrs old. They were like...uhhh we don't know lol.

Anyone else have this problem with the CSS and only have Einstein as their sole CSS requiring school? I am under 26 years old, which the fin aid office said was the age at which applicants were considered independent....so I should have had to fill out my parents' data.

I am thinking either the CSS messed up, Einstein had an error when telling CSS to require applicants to answer certain questions, or my personal CSS account is fudged up lmao.

Let me know if anyone figures this out or same similar results as me!

I had this on my form too, but just left most of it either 0 or blank because the instructions say if it doesn't apply leave it alone essentially.

I spoke to them last week, there's only a confirmation email for the acceptance so don't expect one for the TS list. Apparently my acceptance confirmation didn't go through the first time, so if you didn't get an email about the acceptance confirmation, give them a call!

Great! I received the acceptance confirmation but thanks for clearing the air about the TS form haha I was more than a little worried because it's past the two week deadline for me.

They also send follow up emails 2 days before the deadline if you're missing something

I hate to be absolutely neurotic but on the acceptance form, the confirmation page is titled "Waiting List Confirmation." Does anybody else see this? I don't want the the wonderful ladies in the office to hate me if I call them and ask :$

Nah, they're super nice. I don't remember it, but I probably didn't see it.
