2014-2015 Baylor College of Medicine Application Thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
To second TexasBear, a poster reported on last year's thread on Feb. 6th that only 123 acceptances had gone out by that point. Additionally, there had been acceptances reported on SDN just prior to that date, so this year's number may well be lower than 123. Over 300 will wind up being accepted. Plenty still to be given out, including to those who interviewed early.

Good luck to everyone applying!

I'm currently a second year in my core medicine rotation and enjoying every bit of it. I can say without a doubt Baylor is the best decision I've made in my life so far. The preclinical curriculum is fast-paced, but prepared me well for clinicals. I still have a lot to learn, but it's nice being out of the classroom and being responsible for actual patients.

Let me know if you have any questions that haven't already been answered!

Accepted!!! I just got the call!!!
+3!!!!!!!!!!
I just got the call too!!! I can't believe it!!!!
Congrats Everyone! I'm so jeaulous, Baylor is my top choice and undoubtedly the best medical school in Texas. Please remember to immediately withdraw your applications from your other schools. You've achieved your dream, but there are other applicants who are still dreaming! Cheers and good luck.

Congrats to all! Baylor is one of the best schools in the nation! Please consider dropping your TMDSAS match holds as there are other applicants that want to hear the good news as well

Hey all, I am interviewing here soon and was wondering what the interviews were like here? I have heard mixed things from past years. Any help would be much appreciated!

I interviewed in December and both of them were pretty laid back. I didn't get any difficult questions or ethical situations. Mostly they just asked about my application and one of them asked me about a blip on my transcript and what I had learned from it. Other than that it was pretty standard and the students that gave us our tour were really friendly. Good Luck!

IMPORTANT NOTICE FOR APPLICANTS ACCEPTED TO BAYLOR: Please Please Please make sure that you withdraw your acceptances/applications from the TMDSAS schools as soon as possible. There are many waitlisted appplicants (myself included) still waiting in agony. Promptly withdrawing will allow the admissions committees to more quickly offer acceptances and more quickly bring relief to those still waiting. Thanks everyone.

Accepted applicants are under no obligation to reject any acceptances until April 30th and should not do so unless they are 100% sure they want to go to a particular school. Financial aid packages have not yet been released as far as I know, and that will certainly play a role in some applicants' choices, including mine. Be patient. Those spots that people with multiple acceptances are holding will not go unfilled.

Seconded. Health_Is_Key is right that acceptances should be withdrawn as soon as courteously possible. However -- and I'm sorry to say this -- that time has not yet come for most people. Financial aid packages haven't been put together and many second look events haven't occurred yet. Even after those events, scholarships can be doled out as late as May and those can certainly change the landscape of things. I know of many substantial awards that were not given until late March.

Congrats to those accepted! I guess the status change before acceptance isn't a big thing this cycle

My post was not directed to those whom are still considering their decisions. It is directed to those whom are dead set on this school and whom have already made up their minds (cuz it's freaking Baylor), regardless of scholarship offers or second look visits. Hence why I said "as soon as possible." If you've made up your mind about attending Baylor, you don't have to wait until April 30th just because that's the deadline date. I'm just pointing out to please be thoughtful of others.

Accepted Wednesday :soexcited:. Didn't truly hit me until yesterday morning, when I was watching the video of last year's match day and I started crying. This school is incredible on all levels.

Baylor is really amazing. BCM matched 11/11 urology applicants this year! In a specialty where the match rate has been below 70% the last three years, Baylor has gone 28 for 28 in that time.

This is CERTAINLY correct. I posted BCM acceptance stats earlier here (see p. 16 of this thread).

While 40-45% of all who interview are actually accepted (a bit smaller percentage among those OOS), like other top schools, BCM is VERY methodical about the process. One assessment (studentdoc.com) has shown that their ACCEPTED applicants rank # 4 (behind only Washington U., Hopkins, and Harvard) among all 141 legitimate "allopathic" medical schools in LizzyM scores.

That said, some of their top acceptees would necessarily ALSO be accepted to Washington U, Harvard, Hopkins, etc., and ALL of them to their IS public schools. This helps explain why just 40% of those accepted from OOS actually matriculate at BCM (47/119).
Some acceptees would indubitably await other acceptances, which partly answers the exhortations above about canceling other acceptance offers. And yes, scholarship money/net cost DOES matter to most applicants.

Interesting side note-- BCM likes "different" majors...they literally crow at the BCM site about the number of (30+) different majors in each class. Ergo, an Humanities, or English, or Atmospheric Science major with a 35/3.8s and solid EC's would look very solid indeed!

OOH, check out some good stats here about Step 1 performance...BCM has led the nation (or been right there at the top) in the average on this critical criterion (to residency matches):

What is so special about this figure? Am I missing something?

It was simply proffered FYI, FWIW...a link to more details. A key reckoning of any medical school should be how well it prepares students for the Step (BCM has recently been # 1 among 140+ schools in Step 1 average) and, in turn, for residency placements. The very next post (by a current BCM student) segued by showing graphic depictions of those recent matches. While many from BCM go into P.C. foci, which is surely needed in medicine generally, there are also quite impressive specialties with excellent programs. Indubitably, to match, as mentioned just above by "anhtimmy," 10/10 applicants into ortho in 2014 speaks for itself. 👍

What are the chances that I can still interview at Baylor before the end of February? Just sent them a pretty substantial update with a very strong LOR from my current research PI. Sent them a less substantial update around Thanksgiving, which didn't seem to do much. I called the admissions office to see if updates and new LORs were still being accepted and they told me to send it over through email, but I worry that admissions was just being courteous in letting me send an update, even though interview invites are over...

No idea, but send it regardless. It's better to have done all you can and be rejected than to be rejected and have that feeling of what if...

quick question.. I'm not sure if this has already been answered but if we are currently holding an offer from a TMDSAS school, what is the latest date we can receive an offer from Baylor? May 15 or June 1?

Anybody know when we should expect for financial/scholarship offers to be sent out?

It might/can come simultaneously with the offer to attend, which makes a lot of sense, since net cost is necessarily such a key part of one's medical school acceptance decision.
This is surely true for the later WL offers (May) when there is a big musical chairs shuffle after candidates with multiple offers must make a final decision, which frees up spots at various places. I noted earlier that less than half of those accepted from OOS actually matriculate at BCM (47/119 in a recent class). This frees up slots, and OOS offers become somewhat more likely after the Texas deadline for offers.

Anyone who interviewed on 1/23 get a phone call or have a status change?

I interviewed the same day and have yet to hear back. I have been checking both my email and this thread somewhat frantically.

Drove by the school and the McNair campus today

I was there the same day and it sounds like we have quite a while to wait before we hear anything.

They said three weeks minimum and it seems like there was a round of calls right after our interview but after that I haven't heard of anyone else getting in. It's kind of unnerving because they said basically that the longer away from the interview the less likely your chance.

I'm pretty sure they are done with the II, but who knows someone could withdraw last second.

There was 6+ months between my interview and when I got the acceptance call.

I submitted my secondary there in August I think it was--definitely Fall at any rate and I still haven't heard anything as far as an interview. I'm guessing I'm not gonna be hearing good news when I hear something haha.

Hi guys! Long time lurker here. Has anyone heard anything about scholarship offers? If we haven't heard anything by now, does that mean we're not getting one? Or have they not gone out yet? Thanks in advance!
