2014-2015 Baylor College of Medicine Application Thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Got a missed call from BCM this morning with no message. Eep.

*Edit* Calling the number back goes to the main BCM switchboard.

*Editedit* My application status is no longer supported.

Not to freak you out, or overwhelm you with excitement, but one of my friends just posted on facebook that he got accepted....

I just checked my application status and it is also saying "no longer supported", but It's the first time I've ever checked. I didn't get a call as of yet. Is this a normal status? Can anyone who has been accepted give some insight?

Edit: or anyone with a different status?

Edit: Made it in. Looks like the "no longer supported" is indicative of an acceptance letter.

Congratulations on the acceptances. My fingers are still crossed!

Are any of the accepted OOS?

Also, do they send any confirmation for receiving update letters?

Also accepted this morning after a long wait! Interviewed in early September so was super excited to get the call!!

Edit: IS, sent a letter in Jan(no confirmation), and my status also changed to not supported but didn't check till after

No change in status here...is anyone else's status the same? Hoping these aren't the last acceptances to go out....

At risk of being slightly too hopeful, I don't think they are. People on here have maintained that Baylor is pretty conservative with giving out acceptances - they take their time, and continue making calls through May, and possibly even after (on the interview day, they mentioned that last year, they made their last call around mid-June). Keep those fingers crossed! 🙂

Questions for OOS matriculants who bought property to obtain Texas residency: what did you buy? what is the average cost for an apartment/condo? what areas did you look in? for example, did you try to buy something where many medical students live so you would be able to rent it out to help pay the mortgage? I realize these are personal questions, so feel free to PM me. Any thoughts/advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

Any of the recently accepted holding onto a match through TMDSAS (UTH or UTHSCSA) specifically?

When I interviewed, I talked to a current student who was OOS and bought a condo to obtain residency, and he said we'd be looking at around $80-120k.

I have a match at UTH. I haven't decided between Baylor and UTH. I'm waiting to hear about finances I guess.

I got the call this morning after seeing my status change to not supported. I interviewed on the 23rd of January and I'm instate.

How long after the status change did you get the call? Congratulation !

Thanks for this info! I'm really overwhelmed at the prospect of having to do all this.

i would like to remain hopeful too...but why would BCM not be finished with calls by now? haven't they been done interviewing for awhile? are they waiting for people to withdraw spots? if so, doesn't that mean those not accepted yet are basically waitlisted?

Has anyone been post-interview rejected this year? Or heard of anyone who was?

Got the call this morning (OOS and interviewed in September)! I noticed the status change yesterday. Sent an update/LOI last week (no confirmation of receipt). Does anyone know what the schedule is like for second look? Trying to figure out travel plans but I have not received any details about the itinerary

I have heard April 10th and 11th, but they will hopefully confirm that with y'all soon.

I couldn't tell you why their process is the way it is, only that it keeps me a little sane to know that I might still be in the running - even if it means getting waitlisted. Several people have spoken encouragingly about getting off the waitlist, so we'll just have to wait and see, I guess (yaayyy). :xf:

Congrats to everyone that got the good news!!! Baylor is a wonderful place. I hope you can all visit for 2nd look weekend and come to the same conclusion 🙂

Accepted Friday to the MSTP. Very wow! Much excite!

But seriously y'all. So happy. Congrats to everyone else!

Does anyone know if it's useful to send updates for scholarship purposes? For instance, I have already been accepted, but was just chosen for a senior award at my college, do you think that is worth sending an update to Baylor?

Of course its useful, it shows your interest in the school and give them more merits to consider.

Again folks, there are multiple reasons to be encouraged about later acceptance spots from the WL. More than half of those BCM initially accepts OOS (25% of each matriculating class) will NOT finally matriculate @ BCM. A reason is that they simply opt for their IS public schools, especially if granted scholarships/grants, etc. Also, some superstars are also accepted at multiple top schools-- say Washington U., Hopkins, and Harvard, e.g., but they can finally only attend one of them and must "fish or cut bait" by the deadline-- end of April(?). Keep the faith!
🙂 :luck:

Does anyone know when scholarships are offered? While I appreciate the low relative cost, I wouldn't mind some additional decrease 🙂

Many of my friends received scholarships this week last year. But it's a rolling process so timing can vary widely.

I remember hearing March somewhere (interview day?) but maybe there's a few left...

I received my financial aid offer immediately after posting and inquired of the office if that meant I was out of luck for scholarships. Their response indicated that scholarships might continue to be sent out for the next two months.

Our exchange:
Me: As I have received this offer, should I understand that I am no longer under consideration for scholarships, or might there be an offer made at a later date?
Them: Our office does not award merit scholarships to incoming students, those are handled through the Admissions Office Deans. If they offer you one within the next month or so, we will adjust your award letter. Already being awarded does not preclude you in any way of being offered other scholarships.

I'm studying abroad and don't have my acceptance packet here, nor can I find this information online. Could someone PM me the email to send updates to?

I am debating who to send a letter of intent to for Baylor, do you guys think I should address it to the committee or the dean? Should I email it to the generic email address they gave us or to the dean of admissions (can't seem to find her email)?

Based on advice I got, I addressed it to the deans (Dr. Johnson and Dr. Vallejo), and sent it to the generic email address. Are we supposed to send it to the deans' email addresses?

Did you do different letters for each dean or did you send a combined one?
