2014-2015 Drexel University Application Thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
So I got the "a decision has been made" status like over a week ago with still no mail. I got an email from the school of public health at Drexel asking if they could review my application for the MD/MPH program. Does this mean I got accepted to the MD program? Does anyone know how that works?

"Admissions: Eligible applicants to the MD/MPH program must first submit their application to the Drexel University College of Medicine. On the College of Medicine’s supplemental application, please check the "public health interest" box to be automatically considered for the MD/MPH program. If the applicant is accepted to the College of Medicine, they will then be reviewed for admission to the dual degree program."

Crossing my fingers for you!

Hey. The same thing happened to me. I emailed them back with the form and asked how long the School of Public Health would take to make a decision. Their response was that first they had to get a decision from the School of Medicine and after that it would take 2-3 weeks. Maybe they just send the release to all MD/MPH applicants? I don't know. It's confusing because both of our portals say that a decision has been made.

Wow interviews 10/22 file is currently under review by the committee how long after this is the decision?!

Note: already had the under review by adcom status

Anyone else who interviewed 9/24 still have the "will be sent to committee shortly" message?

i interviewed around that time also. and mine just changed to 'file currently under review by committee also' within the last day or two.
with everyone getting mixed messages about a decision vs. a final decision, i think I'm just gunna wait for the mail and not try and decode anything😵

Has anyone tried to send them an update post-interview (but without a decision yet)?

I tried to send them an update, and haven't gotten an email saying something like "This update has been added to your file"

I'm just worried because I had some pretty significant stuff happen right after my interview, and I want them to hear about it before my file goes to the actual committee...

I interviewed on 9/18 and still haven't had my portal updated with a decision status? Anyone else in a similar boat?

Congrats PharoahJ!

Question: I interviewed mid October (10/10-10/17) and my status has still not changed from "Your interview has been scheduled. If you've already appeared for the interview, your file will now progress through our Admissions Committee process. Please watch for updates and allow 8 weeks for a decision." Do you think it is worth emailing them to see what's up? Not to be pushy but maybe it also shows interest?

I wouldn't....it's only been 3-4 weeks and that specifically told you to "please allow 8 weeks."

I just noticed that most other people have updates on their process by now. No worries. But you're right! Probably wouldn't be received well.

I understand, not saying you're wrong for feeling like you should have/want a decision. It's the probably wouldn't be well received component guiding my advice.

I'm a first time poster here but have spent much time viewing all of the forums for help throughout this entire process.

Since many people (myself included) were concerned about the "Final decision vs decision" dilemma, I can confirm that this year there isn't a distinction between the two.

My status change read "The Admissions committee has reached a decision....." and today I received an acceptance letter in the mail. So apparently "decision" can mean "acceptance" this year! So don't worry too much about what it reads online and wait for the letter to come in the mail without jumping to conclusions!

Cheers

You are a beacon of hope for those of us lost in the "decision" vs. "final decision" madness
Thanks! I am hoping all of you grab an acceptance here as well!
Congrats PharoahJ!

I would say wait a bit I heard back later than I expected as compared to last year's thread.

I interviewed on 9/22 and it took just a little over 2 weeks for my status to change from the "interview scheduled" verbiage. It can take a while sometimes, I would imagine they're pretty backed up with so many applicants.

My status also said 'The Admissions Committee has reached a decision on your application. A letter will be mailed to your preferred address. ' and I was just accepted via snailmail about a week later. Don't read too much into the wording of these status updates is what I'm getting at.

Can med students chime in on their experiences at this school?

how do you like it?

does the fact that so many medical schools nearby in philly have any bearing on your clinical exposure?

Still at file is complete and will be reviewed. Complete 8/22 but payment wasn't complete till 9/17. Anyone else in this situation?
So weird, I am in the exact same situation, dates and all. They somehow didn't process my payment for a long time. Really hoping to hear back soon

In the same boat. I've given up hope on my application being reviewed after leaving a voicemail and emailing with no responses to either. I'm pretty sure some error happened with those complete in late August/early September. I guess all we can do is wait till the "3 month" mark and then have a real reason to ask them what's up. Can't believe its almost been that much time!

Yea, it looks like they've changed it from the past years. So unfortunately you'll have no way to know beforehand.

My posts are all throughout the thread, but in regards to the clinical exposures - there are no problems with a lack of patients. Since we have such a big medical school, we have clinical locations all over. We also have 5 free clinics in the city that are mostly run by students. From the ones that I've gone to, we always have a faculty attending at each one. If you want to, you can start volunteering and interviewing patients at these locations as early as September in your first year after the clinic orientation. Philadelphia is a huge city so there are plenty of patients. We also have other sites in Pennsylvania, Delaware, New Jersey and even in Sacramento. (For those people who aren't from the area like me - Philadelphia/Delaware/New Jersey are probably about 30-40 minutes away from each other).

Hi, first time poster here!
I'm trying to see if the statuses are still different, as I'm not sure if it's been completely clear through this thread.

WL as well. Got the "a decision has been reached status."

What exactly is your status on the website? Could you please copy it word for word? And your mailed letter was a WL correct?

My status said "decision has been made" so I was anticipating a WL letter by mail but I received a rejection letter instead. So it seems like the "decision" vs "final decision" doesn't really apply this year. 🙁

What exactly is your status as well? Is it "The Admissions Committee has reached a decision on your application?"

Thank you for your help guys!
Good luck to everyone! I'm waiting right alongside with you.

I cannot copy word for word since my status has since changed confirming that I am on the WL. But, it said something along the lines of.. a decision has been reached. Just hang on a few weeks and see what happens. Don't go crazy trying to make sense out of the wording. PATIENCE.

Calm down buddy lol. Looks like we won't know for sure until we get the mail 🙂

Accepted! Letter arrived yesterday Nov. 5. Got the "decision" status a full week earlier on Oct. 29. Interviewed Oct 13.

Also, it came in a normal-sized envelope, but it was rather bulky. Lots of forms inside.

Congrats! That was quick! I interviewed 9/30 and I'm still under review...

me too, complete 8/22 (email on 8/26), but there have been a handful of late August rejections/holds on this thread so idk!!

So I know I am late, but I just submitted my secondary... How long should I wait before I start panicking?

Sounds like they changed the decision verbiage midstream, tomz? Glad so many got happy surprises, in that case. 🙂

To the people who interviewed in September and have no new information yet, that has happened in the past to a few posters here. There's no speeding the process, but calling occasionally isn't a bad idea.

Hey Tomz

went through your post history on this thread and didn't find anything about Drexel's highlights

Anything particular that sets this institution apart from other schools?

Sorry about that, It was probably just random lines embedded in my random verbose posts or maybe I confused something I typed up on in the post-bacc forum.

I really liked the school because I did the post-bacc (IMS/MMS) program here. They really gave me an opportunity when my choices were probably slim. Then when I came here to interview, I went around to talk to the faculty. All of them were incredibly friendly to me. I was a nobody peon, but some of them kept me for a long time just to talk to me. They made sure everything was great and wished me well.

I could make a list of basically all of our different faculty and just list the ways they've been really helpful and cool with me, but it would take too much time.

I guess it isn't really unique because a lot of med schools have great faculty, but I think the faculty here is super friendly and awesome. I really like the way the curriculum and notes are handled after comparing it with my other friends.

I think if you look at the school's record on who it accepts - we do have a few more non-traditional than a few other allopathic schools too. Service in the community is pretty important here, and it was one of the bigger things that I've done in the past (we have lots of free clinics, clubs, etc). The location was great for me, especially the rotation opportunity in Sacramento because my parents live there.

The PIL / IFM thing wasn't that important to me. I would have been happy in either one. Both have group work and lectures just in different ways. We share the same faculty, so we aren't learning anything different. Both score the same on Step 1. The LCME accreditation thing is forcing most medical schools to have a lot more of their class time as group work stuff, so IFM is slowly working towards a lot more group work. I know that year 1 and 2 this year have had more than what it used to.

I can't find anything on previous threads about Drexel's scholarship situation. Can any current students shed some light on Drexel's propensity to give out scholarships?
