2014-2015 Florida International University Application Thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
By chance are you OOS?? Or low stats?

I noticed mine changed to preliminary review completed in early November (I was complete mid Sept, I think). I'm in state and have strong ties to the Miami area, though.

I am OOS and lizzy m score>70

For those who have already been offered interviews, did FIU call or email you with the interview invite?

Thanks!!

Just got an II !!

Interview on 1/9 for me.

II! WOO! LizzyM <70, OOS, extensive research

Already toured the school and love it. Everyone is MEGA friendly, and I wasn't even part of a tour group. Signed up for 1/9, though I may see if I have an opportunity to squeeze in earlier, barring someone else's cancellation.

when were u complete?

Just got an II. OOS, 3.2 sGPA, 3.0 cGPA, 35 MCAT, complete late October.

I have a question for those who have/had interviews. What days of the week does FIU typically interview? I can't find the information on their website and I need to reschedule mine. I know FIU interviews on Mondays, at least.

Thanks and congratulations!

I believe it's Mondays and Fridays.

And thanks! Good luck!

Scratch that: interview was just rescheduled for Friday.

For those of you who have interviews in January and/or February, you may be able to jump in earlier if there is a cancellation from another student AND you ask the stressed-out admissions staff very nicely (seriously, there's never any reason to be rude to those poor people). Bumped mine up by over a month.

II after being stuck on "Secondary application complete" status since July. There is hope, people! :cat:

Whee! Congrats! Good luck!
Did you ever get switched to "Secondary Application Under Review" or anything like that? Or just straight from "Complete" to II?

I stopped checking super frequently around October, but I believe I checked sometime last week and it was still on the complete status.

Is it possible for OOS to get in state tuition after the first year?

After reading, it is pretty hard for OOS to get instate after the first year.

Just got an II as well!! OOS LizzyM 69

Is there any way for OOS students to reduce tuition cost? Wondering if the debt is worth it...

I just looked up getting instate tuition and it is next to impossible. I was pretty sad when I saw 68,000 dollar price tag.

When you include all the ridiculous mandatory fees/costs (university fee, computer fee, disability insurance, "mask fitting," etc.), the price tag easily goes above $70,000. Without a military or academic scholarship, you better take a good long look at your other options. Unless you marry a FL resident or move to FL a year in advance, that's what you're paying, before living expenses.

I had my interview last Friday and would like to give the inquiring minds some info:

I have been filming intermittent vlogs throughout the season. I made one specifically for you guys. Hope it helps!

(Sidenote: I mention "...doing this for 7 years." I haven't been applying for the last 7 years; this is my first application cycle. What I meant was: it has been 7 years since changing focuses and switching over to medicine. Because I'm 29. And that's old.)

First of all, thanks for putting in the effort to make this video. I actually interviewed a couple weeks earlier (and am anxiously waiting my decision), so although it won't necessarily help me as much as it might a future interviewee, it certainly does cement the great vibes I got from the school when I visited!

Second of all... you're not old. One of the residents in the department I'm working in decided on medicine after being a professor for 20+ years.

You're only as old as you feel, after all.

Good luck to you! Only a couple of weeks left!

Thanks so much for posting this! It's definitely helpful... Good luck to you throughout this application cycle as well!

got rejected here a couple days ago. no alternate list. interviewed about a month ago. I didn't think the interview went THAT badly. the rejection is pretty rough. if you compare the interview to a first date (and they loved using that analogy. it got kinda old by the end of the day), it's like not only does FIU not want to continue dating me, but they don't even want to be friends. that's mildly insulting. they're not even keeping my number in their cell phone for an occasional late night text. they want me TOTALLY out of their life.

ouch.

Anyone from the 11/24 interview date hear back yet? My application status changed to "admissions committee review completed" on Tuesday afternoon. I'm assuming this means the admissions board convened... but I haven't heard anything yet. They're killing me haha.

They said this week so today or tomorrow! Hang in there! 🙂

+1

I am sitting here shaking at my desk... Whoever gets notified, regardless of decision, please share...

congrats to all of those that were accepted! I am trying to plan my interview day, and I was wondering if anybody could tell me when the day got over. I want to fly out after my interview, but it looks like the last flight out of Miami is 630. Will this work? Do people recommend the Miami or ft lauderdale airport?

This is not my cycle so I can't help with the time but as a Florida resident I can tell you that FIU is very close to the Miami airport. But it's also a large annoying airport that I avoid if possible whereas I like FLL. Due to the close proximity if costs are the same definitely pick MIA. Especially because getting up to Fort Lauderdale around that time would be long and painful due to traffic.

I'm 29 also! I'm not going to lie though, it was a tough birthday. (That countdown to 30... :/ )

Dat Dirty 30, tho. 😉

I'm glad there's a wealth of 29-year olds! Congratulations to all who heard positive things today! *fist bump*
