I got rejected pre-fee request... Did that happen to anyone else? Pretty shocking/upsetting but I guess it saves me the money

That's strange. I didn't know mayo screened for the fee request.

That's strange. I didn't know mayo screened for the fee request.
Their website states: "For those applicants selected for secondary review, an application filing fee of $120 must be submitted. "
But, we know from SDN that the turnaround for fee requests can be extremely quick (there are people who received fee requests on June 27th, the day their primary got sent out). This implies that this "selection for secondary review" involves some kind of stats screen, at least in my opinion.

That being said, I'm struggling to find anything on their official website that talks about a second screen before the LOR request... It merely says that you should try to submit everything (fee and LORs) as early as possible. Even their email doesn't say anything specific about a screen -- just that they "do not request letters of recommendation from all applicants." My point is that the wording here is a little inconsistent with the statements they have on their website.

Without the ability to check the progress of your app, the MMS admissions process feels a little bit mysterious. And when admissions processes get more and more mysterious, rejections feel more and more arbitrary (regardless of whether they actually are or not).

What I'm really trying to say here is that you shouldn't take a rejection from Mayo too personally. After all, they must have very specific holistic criteria if they're going to pick a class of 40 out of 4,000.

I didn't know they screened for the fee request either, but from my understanding they don't look at the PS until after LOR's come in. So does that mean I was rejected solely based on GPA/MCAT or are ECs included in the review too?

But thank you, @wolverine2015grad for your perspective. I just think that since no one else I know was rejected pre-fee request too, I feel a little bit ridiculous haha.

My stats are 3.5GPA/30 MCAT. So not super great, but I didn't think it would exclude me immediately either.

I really don't know what they do, or do not, look at prior to the fee request. As I said, I get the feeling that, because the fee request turnaround is so quick for some people, a large portion of it has to do with stats, I think. But, your stats alone are certainly not going to keep you out of medical school, so keep your head up.

Yea, I don't know anyone who was erected pre-fee request either -- it seems a bit pre-mature to get all hot and bothered before an II. But I do know other people who were rejected pre-fee request, so you're definitely not alone in that 😉

@florida91 I'm sorry to see that you were rejected. 🙁 Keep your chin up!

Would you mind sharing the date you sent your verified application to Mayo and also the date you were rejected?

Haha oh my goodness. No idea how that word got in there. Obviously really sleep deprived from work and secondaries lol

Sure! I added Mayo and was verified early June, so Mayo should've gotten my application on June 27th. I received the rejection email 7/18. Basically it says there was a review of my AMCAS application and it wasn't chosen for further consideration.

Thanks guys for the support! 🙂

Thanks! I appreciate you taking the time to reply. Best of luck this cycle!

What makes you say that?
Just based off last year, so it could totally change! But, both last year and this year LOR requests started on July 8. Last year the first II went out on July 25, which is Friday of this week. So I'd say its half prediction half wishful thinking haha

Anyone know if Mayo accepts updates pre-interview invite (aka nowish?) I'm currently "complete" and a paper I'm on was accepted for publication. I don't have any pubs on my app so far. Would it be worth it to send an update now, or will it seem desperate or too soon?

I don't know publications are a pretty big deal so it never hurts to call and ask! They're pretty responsive via email from my experience, too.

Was verified on the 15th, no fee request yet! I'm getting nervous. :nailbiting:

I hope we get it soon! I love this school! 😍

I day dream of just randomly checking my email and getting an interview at any medical school....ooo wishful thinking..the best kind of thinking
I may or may not do this as well.

I am thinking/hoping II for Mayo will come out on 7/26 at 2:33 a.m.

I received an interview invite last week when I checked my phone in a very specific spot in the hospital .... I now frequent to that exact spot multiple times per day to refresh my email hoping for some luck LOL

Yikes, 85 acceptances out of 286 interviews.. I always had in mind that the chances of acceptance were fairly high after an II was given. And, if the rumored # of 1700 receiving LORs is true, 286 interview slots is still fairly small.

...BUT, enough with the negativity. We got this! 😀

Do you guys think there's any chance of more LOR requests coming out at this point? This was always a long shot, but I thought I had fairly unique ECs. Good luck to those complete!

A 30% chance post interview is a hell of a lot better than the 1.8% chance you have at the beginning though.

Yes, I imagine they will continue to issue LOR requests on a rolling basis. Mayo also issues rejections, so you will hear something eventually. It seems from last year's thread most people hear something within 4 weeks. Good luck!

This is true. I'm already farther than I thought so really, I should be happy... Anxiously awaiting my "complete" email. So then I can continue anxiously waiting for the next correspondence from them.

Me too. I'm at the point that I should be hearing about interviews at quite a few schools soon. And getting one at Mayo would be fantastic start.

Thanks! Yeah, I've been bracing myself for the worst. My mayo dream seems to have ended before it even began.

No I don't mean that you'll be rejected! Just that you will have an answer soon. No silence from Mayo usually.

Oh I know! I just think a rejection is the most likely outcome after so long (fee paid 7/7), but here's hoping. At least I'll know soon enough. Thanks!

I paid on the 7th as well and still no love either.

Yeh I'm getting frustrated. I totally keep forgetting this is my reach school :-(

Random thought, but if any of you were planning on meeting your significant other in medical school Mayo doesn't exactly have the largest pool to choose from 😛

I'm already married, so that's not a consideration. I am really attracted to the small class size, though. I went to a rigorous college prep high school with a total class of 64 and I loved it! I'm still in touch with most of my class via Facebook and would love a similar environment for medical school.

I agree! The small class size is very attractive. Mayo is such a cool and unique and cool school. Just an observation.

Same! I'm married but the small class size is really appealing. I graduated from a university with over 30,000 people and always said if I could do it again (minus the post bacc I did...which I guess was my second shot...haha) I'd go to a smaller liberal arts school. But I guess it's ok since I met my husband at my alma mater 😉
