2014-2015 New York University Application Thread

Whoa. I did not expect them to start releasing acceptances so soon. MSAR says that they shouldn't start releasing them for another month. (I didn't get one).

NYU and Mt. Sinai both released acceptances today. The 1-2 punch of NYC Med School.

Based on their twitter post, it appears that the first batch of acceptances went out today. I would assume that that means that several other waves are planned as well (excluding the natural openings resulting from accepted applicants withdrawing).

I called them, and they were very quick and adamant in stating that not hearing today does not mean we won't get in over the next few months. More waiting, then! Trying to stay optimistic 🙂 i know I'm far below their average stats, so maybe it'll just take a bit for them to decide whether or not to take a chance on me.

Yeah, I assume that it's way too early for them to make THE big round of acceptances before the waitlist. We're in this together!

I wonder what happens to those who submit their secondary on the deadline date? Are they automatically rejected?

still waiting for a II here. I was one of the unfortunate few who got a false II on 9-8 (they offered an interview and immediately emailed saying there was a mistake). Is it not likely that I'm getting one?

Same thing happened to me and I got an II after. It is certainly possible!

Should I even bother submitting my secondary today? Someone please respond.
No. All interview slots are essentially filled. So unless you have a 4.0 and a MCAT >40 you pretty much have a snowball's chance.

🙁 unfortunately it's super ultra late in the cycle to submit a secondary. Besides, NYU only interviews to Dec 18 and they have already sent II's for all the dates from now until then.

lol. The likelihood of you getting an interview is less than the likelihood that they open up new interview days...

To those that have interviewed, thank you notes are supposed to be sent to the general admissions email, correct?

Okay, so I had my interview at NYU a couple of weeks ago, but I was pretty sick (I took a bunch of cold meds and so the whole days was such a blur). I was just going through my duffel and realized I took my badge/nametag with me and also realized I never 'checked out.' Is there a check out process? Do I need to call admissions and do something?

I also never sent a thank you note (I thought I didn't need to since it was MMI).

I'm just now recovering from what I now know was walking pneumonia so am just thinking about all these things and hoping I didn't screw things up.

No check out procedure. I think we kept the name tag but even if we didn't it shouldn't be a big deal.

I sent one to the gen admissions email -- they said thank you and asked that I upload my letter to the portal

I haven't sent any schools update letters yet... Do you think a first author poster + continued interest is a valid enough reason to send correspondence to NYU? I would love to hear good news from this school. I interviewed on their first day in early September and obviously did not receive an acceptance earlier this week during the wave of admissions decisions.

I imagine it would depend on where you presented your poster (locally vs. at a national conference). But even if the poster were at a smaller venue, why not send in the letter?

I heard that more than 80% of the seats have been offered. Is that true? Someone close to the school said.

Keeping my fingers double crossed. Means there is still about 30 slots. Give me one please!!!!

I would not be too surprised if that were the case, given that they only interview up until December 18th. I wonder how many acceptances they will reserve for people interviewing between now and that date. Anybody know about this?

Never sent a thank you note because it was MMI and was accepted. You're probably fine. Good luck!

When you say 80% of seats, do you mean 80% of the class size has been offered? Most schools have to offer 2-3 times their class size in order to fill it (including NYU).

Not sure but I will try to get clarification.

My source said that slightly over 300 acceptances have been given out so far. Does not sound good for me. I interviewed in early October. Have BS in Biochem and MBA, Science GPA 3.90 and MCAT of 38. Oh well...still keeping a positive outlook. Perhaps better news from another school soon but I really want to live in NYC.

How many acceptances do they give out?

It would make no sense at all to have given out 80% of the total acceptances offered when there is still more than a full month of interviews left...

USNWR says that they gave out 490 acceptances last year. I think 300 acceptances already is a bit high... My hope is that the first wave went to applicants with really high stats and stellar applications, and that those with a bit lower stats or less amazing activities will be re-evaluated later. I am not gonna give up 😀 I think there's still a great chance that some more people will hear good news in the next month or two!

I would predict that the number is probably closer to 70%. However, 300 does not seem completely unreasonable if there are still 190 acceptances to be given out. It has been shown that schools with rolling admissions tend to give out more acceptances to the candidates they interview earlier.

I know that this isn't necessarily a great argument, but Michigan is also trying to fill a similar sized class as NYU, and they've only given 110 acceptances so far.
Granted, they also interview longer, and they interview about half as many people...so I'm not sure where I'm going with any of this.
EDIT: What Toastayy said.

I wish they let us know the latest date they gave decisions for. It would be nice to know if the silence means they haven't made a decision or otherwise

If nothing happens this week, the good news is Jay Peak is opening this weekend and I can indeed go IIing.
;(
