2014-2015 New York University Application Thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
I think the majority of the mid oct acceptances did not come out earlier last month, and we're still waiting to hear from them. However, definitely worth sending an update if you have something to update them about, no harm done 🙂

Should I send a LOI even if I have nothing to update them on (besides my desire to go to NYU, of course!)?

I'm really in the same position as you so take this with a grain of salt, but I would definitely wait for a decision and then, if I'm waitlisted, start sending the LOI/update letters.

People cancel last minute and they like having options to fill in those spots. I don't know if I would describe it as "astonishing" so much as "kind of makes sense, and they have every right to do it that way even though it may be somewhat frustrating for some of us even though we aren't owed anything by the school".

You do realize that NYU won't care how much you kiss their butt and brown-nose when they've already filled all interview slots, and if you haven't gotten an interview, you're getting a guaranteed rejection. They could put a small number of applicants on the interview waitlist and not string out everyone else with this silent rejection stuff. I still remember when NYU actually accidentally released their rejections then covered it up. it was hilarious, the code was literally there so they should have just sent people the damn rejections.

The way this school handles admissions is deplorable and embarrassing.

I know they won't care. I don't care either since I already interviewed there this cycle. I'm sorry that you feel so salty towards the school, and I'm sorry that you ruined a good Katy Perry song.

that song sucks, and schools like NYU deserve to be called out full their bs otherwise you're just being an enabler and letting them do it again. kind of like how UCSD releases the same broken glitched out application and wastes everyone's time each year with it, and never bothers to remedy the actual problem beforehand. if no one calls it out it's gonna keep happening.

NYU's just one of the most competitive to receive an II compared to others:

Interview Invite Percentages below are calculated from MSAR data.

NYU: 10.95%

Columbia: 13.6 %
Mount Sinai: 13.2%
Cornell: 12.4%
Wash U St. Louis: 22%
Case Western: 17.7%
Yale: 14.7%
Harvard: 13%
U Pitts: 16.6%

More/similar competitive level than NYU:

Stanford: 7.3%
U Chi: 10.7%
Northwestern: 9.5%
Vanderbilt: 8.8%
John Hopkins: 11.7%
Brown: 3.72% (wth!!)

NY State Schools: ~10.6%

NYU receives far more applications than some of the other top tiers, similar to that of a NY state school. Hence why, Yale and Harvard for example have a higher II percentage but they receive far less applications. But, NYU manages to invite more than 900 applicants given their short interview season, which is mainly due to the MMI. I mean I was just hoping somehow I land in the top 90th percentile of all applicants but alas I did not.

Did you actually interview? if not you're toast dude, i'm sorry. NYU's admission process is broken though and in serious need of changes.

Statistically speaking, I believe that George Washington University is the hardest to get an interview at. Statistics don't tell the whole story. Different schools also tailor towards different demographics. If a school thinks that your high stats will mean that you will get accepted at better schools, they may not waste their time trying to interview you.

ALSO, guys, with respect to JuicyJ

Oh yeah I accepted my rejection 2 weeks ago. It's all good. This was a reach for me.

I'm glad to hear it. You have my best wishes this application cycle, and I'm pretty selective about who I give my best wishes to.

Dear NYU admissions committee member checking out this thread: You can feel yourself getting sleepy. Let your feet relax, and your legs relax. Feel your hips relaxing, and your waist relaxing. Feel your chest relaxing, and your arms relaxing. Your shoulders relaxing, and your neck and head relaxing. Feel your entire body relaxing, all over. You can feel yourself relaxing now. You can feel a heavy, relaxed feeling coming over you. And as I continue to talk, that heavy relaxed feeling will get stronger and stronger, until it carries you into a deep, peaceful state of hypnosis. Sinking down, and shutting down. Sinking down, and shutting down. Sinking down, and shutting down, shutting down completely. And the deeper you go, the deeper you are able to go. And the deeper you go, the deeper you want to go, and the more enjoyable the experience becomes. You are thinking about Shtumpa. You know realize that Shtumpa is a great candidate for your school. You will advocate for him. I'm going to count from one to five, and at the count of five you will be feeling wide awake, fully alert, and completely refreshed. Thank you.

Waiting feels:

I know this is probably answered somewhere in the thread but I can't find it--when does nyu release acceptance info? MSAR says the earliest is dec 5th but does that mean everyone finds out then all at once? Or do we wait till jan/feb?

Interviewed mid-Nov and would love to hear good news soon!

I think they've already accepted people, based on previous postings.

This is probably your best source of up-to-date and accurate NYU admissions info at this point.

For those that interviewed, did you do anything special to prep?

Not much to do to prep for MMI. Be prepared to mentally reset yourself between stations, and perhaps brush up on medical ethics (which I advise for any interview, not just MMIs).

They should make the subject of the email "WEBINAR WEBINAR WEBINAR" and have it be sent from "[email protected]". They must know how we react to the word "admissions" in these trying times.

Never got the webinar email.. Or any emails from NYU does that mean ive been out of the running for a while?

The webinar video emails are going to those who have interviewed. It seems (based on this thread) that if you haven't gotten an invitation to interview yet then you're likely out of the running. Sorry.

Does anyone know which interview groups would be considered for today's acceptances? I would imagine those who interviewed before December maybe?

omg so I just saw their tweet - does that mean that today's round of II's are the absolute last?

It sounds like it, but not sure.

Also very excited for today. Complete early August, II early September, and interviewed early November. Good luck everyone!

Do you think they will send acceptances to people who interviewed in September but didn't hear back in the first round of acceptances? (or are these exclusively people who were interviewed after the first round of decisions?)

Sincerely hoping it's the former! I think it is, since I called them after the first round and they said that not hearing anything doesn't mean you won't get in during a later round of acceptances.

No idea. I hope so because I'm in that camp. I guess we'll find out soon enough . . .

They're also sending out more IIs today, according to Twitter.
From NYU's Twitter feed:

"We've received so many great apps this year that we've decided to extend our interview season into January! Sending out more invites today!"

Now we wait!
Ahhh i heard them say this on my interview last week, but have been terrified to share on SDN in case it wasn't true. Glad it's true!
