2014-2015 Ohio State University Application Thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Dr. Capers makes all the phone calls at midnight? I figured they would start earlier around early evening EST. They should've told you exactly when you should hear back regarding decisions during interview day.

I got my call around 8 pm EST the night before my decision was promised. Of all my schools, I thought OSU was certainly the most transparent (and quick) when it came to decision timing post-interview.

Has anyone from the Feb. 16 interview day received a phone call from Dr. Capers yet? I know we were told that we would find out tomorrow, so we should be getting acceptances tonight?

Best of luck to everyone! Make sure that phone is charged and if it rings and says "Unknown", you know EXACTLY who it is 🙂 (unless it's a telemarketer, which would be a horribly stressful coincidence.......)

I thought that was only on the first decision night of the cycle when Dr. Capers has a larger number of people to call? I could be wrong.
Could be but I doubt that it was only that evening. Depending on how good a batch of candidates are he could have another session with a lot of admitted students on any particular night.

Good point, that could definitely happen.

Congratulations to everyone who got in!

Does anyone know the percentage of interviewees who are deferred and the typical number of people taken off the deferred list?

For the people who interview, I know the overall acceptance rate is 52%.

I don't know how I came across this thread yesterday, but I subsequently Googled it:

It's for residency, not medical school, fortunately... but it makes you wonder what it would take to get someone like that fired if that didn't do it 😵 I guess he was just removed from leadership, but not from the staff or something?

I couldn't actually read the google doc, but holy cow. Just from reading the comments on that thread you can tell there is some pretty shady stuff going on. That is for a residency program though, and I don't think this indicates the medical school education is anything less than excellent. But definitely something to keep in mind for when applying to residency programs.

Agreed. I'm not deterred for medical school. And I couldn't see the document either, but I read the comments and Googled for further articles. Scary!

Trust me, this has ZERO to do with your education as a medical student. Ask whatever you want and I'll respond to it but this was NEVER an issue during my clinical years. It is isolated to urology only and 95% of students spend zero time on urology while a medical student.

I guess it just makes me a little wary about going to a school that let this go on and what that means about the school values. Don't get me wrong I still think osu is a great school, but just a little concerned about what happens if I get into a situation like this at OSU because it could totally derail my entire career.

Well, some things to keep in mind. The school and the hospital are two separate entities. This took place with a resident, and was a workplace issue. As a student, there are options available to you to mitigate things such as this if they were to occur. You must remember, school administration and hospital administration are under two different umbrellas, although they do interact on certain levels.

I can tell you from actually interacting with residents and attendings here I have no concerns about future rotations or possibly attending residency here. This case is certainly an exception and not the norm. This could and probably does happen at many institutions across the country with individuals from an older generation of medical practice, but again, probably not common.

As Celdurant said, the hospital administration and medical school administration are very separate. There are pathways through the medical school that can be used if such a situation would arise during your clinical years. If this situation were, hypothetically, to arise the deans of the medical school are ALWAYS available to talk about it. I have even called one of them personally while I had a slight problem with a letter of recommendation and they helped me resolve the issue.

Additionally, as you will find out when you hit the clinical years, every department at every medical institution is run differently. Just because one of them had this problem does NOT mean all of the others have similar problems. All of the ones you rotate through as a medical student do NOT have any of these problems whatsoever.

Just to say it, I am an MS4 and I am NOT on the ADCOM (never have been). I am not trying to cover up anything or sell you guys something. I just love my school and would hate for this one incident unrelated to the school at large hurt the reputation of the school.

When researching this school, doing the essays on the application and then interviewing here......you can tell this school is all about diversity. Like others said, this is unrelated to the school. Although the story is awful and incredibly frustrating.....it has definitely not influenced my perception of OSU at all.

I agree with this post 100%. Diversity was apparent, from the ethos presented by the admissions staff, to the selection of interviewees. This news, while generally disconcerting, doesn't diminish my incredibly high opinion of the school in the least. But this is just my opinion, and admittedly I was hooked by the culture of the program and bought everything they were selling. Perhaps others don't feel this way, which is okay with me. Fewer people to contend with for a spot here!

does anyone know if they pre-interview reject anyone? or is it a silent rejection before mass emailing the rejections after the last interview?

I think they wait until they send out the final II's and then send out rejections to people who didn't interviewed. I asked my friend who goes there this earlier in the year and he said he thinks it works like that.

anyone interviewing Wednesday that maybe wants to share a hotel room? let me know!

Don't need to share a hotel room, but I'm also interviewing on Wednesday! I'm so nervous because this cycle went worse for me than I expected and this is my first & only interview, buuut I'm cautiously optimistic (since everyone has said so far that it's a more casual interview) and hopefully we can meet on Wednesday 🙂

Does anyone know how many people are typically at each interview day for OSU?
There should be 16 interviewees there. I thought it was a good number.

You'll do great. See you tomorrow!

Anyone interviewing on Monday want to share a hotel room for Sunday?

Does anyone know if the OSU College of Medicine is still giving out interviews?

Most likely interviews invites are done unless someone drops their interview invite which for a school like OSU not many people would do so

Hi friends, so am I correct in assuming that for those of us expecting to hear back on portal tomorrow March 10th, accepted students would get a call from Dr. Capers this evening?

You are correct! Best of luck!

ahhhhhhh! I'm so nervous!

Accepted! Got the call just after 9 ET this evening. Am so excited to attend this school!! See you guys at second look weekend?

Any idea when financial aid packets come out?
I know the FAFSA deadline for tOSU is March 15 according to their website...so I would hope maybe by April 1? Just my $0.02 though!

So, unless I missed some posts, only one deferred applicant has been accepted so far?

There are four interview days remaining in this application cycle. Having spoken to many of the interviewees who have passed through, I have no doubt the class of 2019 will be a great one.

For those that have already interviewed and been accepted, I hope to see you all at Second Look weekend. The College of Medicine really puts on a good show.

For those who have been interviewed and are still waiting, good luck to you. Movement will happen and some of you will benefit from that.

To those who did not get an interview or who got rejected, I wish you luck at other schools, or in subsequent cycles if necessary. You are all well qualified, and I'm sure you'll achieve success.

Hey congrats to everyone!
If you can help me by posting your stats like GPA MCAT scores, and a few EC's. Please. I would also like to attend OSU medical and it would help me.
Thanks

Are you saying they are still giving out interviews for the four interview dates available, @Celdurant?

At this point I think it is highly unlikely interview invites are being extended, except in the case of cancellations/withdrawals. March 30th is the final interview day. I would imagine the admissions office gives candidates more than two weeks notice, excluding the cases previously mentioned.
