2014-2015 Oregon Health & Science University Application Thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Wow also interviewed 1/30 but no updates in my portal.
I think the person who posted the 1/30 decision is probably an outlier. If you go back in this thread, I have not come across anyone who received a decision on their app in less than a month! It is either a typo or an outlier not the norm! Average for post interview seems around 7 or 8 week. I have been waiting for over two months now post interview and that is why I feel a bit cranky. Good luck to you and the rest of applicants!

Accepted 2/18. Is there a Second Look for this school? I couldn't find anything, and I haven't been able to find the folder I got on interview day

Not a typo. Jan 30th. I was very surprised to hear back so quick.

I'm wondering why I haven't heard back 🙁 I hope that doesn't mean rejected ! The method seems to be all over the place.
Your 1on1 interviewer has to be present at the committee meeting

No news doesn't mean bad news. Most people I talked to there said they waited at least 8 weeks. I was shocked I heard back so fast.

They sure are all over the place with getting back to us post-interview

In the "warm welcome to ohsu" acceptance email there is an embedded link to explore the campus. Under that link is a ton of info including 2nd look dates. Click the link I almost missed it because I'm familiar with the campus.

If you think about it, it makes sense that there would be a jump between December and January. I doubt they did interviews the week of Christmas or maybe even New Years. But I figured it wouldn't jump all the way to the END of January!

I agree something strange going on. I say we ignore the dates completely. haha

Oh man! I was rejected like 6 weeks ago haha. Just checked my portal...

Congratulations!

They sent a recent e-mail to register for second look days as well that listed the dates. I'm attending the one on the first ones.

I'm not personally going to familiarize myself with the campus or anything, but I think it's valuable to meet other classmates and possibly professors (according to previous friends who attending second looks). Housing seems like it's going to be a bit of an issue to figure out. :S

Thanks! Found it.

Hello everybody, I will be interviewing on March 4th and I will be landing there very early on March 3rd. I wanted to explore the area and was wondering if anybody else was interviewing that day and wanted to explore Portland with me a bit. I was thinking of renting a car for part of the day.
I recommend no car, pdx is very transit friendly and check out Powells books, the waterfront maybe, and the breweries!!

Don't rent a car if you can avoid it. I tried to at the airport and they wanted $500 for a deposit. Get a cab to your interview if need be or just take the street car that loops around the OHSU waterfront campus. For a cheap dinner afterwards, I recommend Deschutes (just prepare for a crowd) near 10th (give or take a couple blocks). They have great burgers and beer. Stay away from the Elysian brew unless you want to wake up on a random street corner in the morning. I would recommend 21-23rd st for "exploring" at night, but if you're looking for nightlife/stinky bars, checkout the waterfront. Kell's Irish Pub (not far from Voodoo donuts) was a great time after my interview (ask them to do their quarter throw trick). Steer clear of Dixie, seriously.

Did anyone get scholar for healthy oregon email before decision but post interview? I will take it as a sign of good omen. Still waiting for decision. Good luck!

Yeah just got that too. Was hoping I could get more excited when I saw it.

I interviewed on 2/6, and I received that email today too. My heart jumped into my throat for a second. lol

The reason why I wanted to rent a car was that I was going to be traveling with my suit and with my luggage and I didnt want to be dragging that around. Would you all recommend possibly renting a car somewhere else or just stay away from car rentals altogether.

Doesn't portland have a car you can rent for day use? It may be called "Zip Car" or something. It's a cheesy little smart car though or a golf cart looking thing. "They see me rollin' "...

I personally prefer a car, I'm more comfortable finding my way around that way. I would not consider Portland a difficult or very expensive city to park in. I would say where you rent depends on age, most rental car places do not like to rent to people under 25, which may have been the reason for the costly deposit.

I just interviewed yesterday and they sent the email to me too during the interview day-- they told us that it's sent to everyone 🙂

Use RelayRides. I never use rental agencies anymore. I've got a car rented for 2 nights, 3 days, and was literally less than $70. Plus my $10 to park on campus, and a little bit to top off the gas when I return it-- that is cheap for my peace of mind!

Wow that is interesting. I never knew something like that existed. Thanks for the info 🙂

I am sure I would look super cool in one of those. Thanks for the help 🙂

Value of meeting professors is for the obvious research connections, or am I missing something?

Well. I would say networking is always valuable...whether it's letters of recommendation, having a second adviser to give you advice on choosing a specialty/residency, or just another source of support in a new environment...

I guess it could never hurt. But definitely not necessary.

Gotcha. I guess I was just surprised to hear the suggestion that this happen during the second look weekend, months before school starts. Talk about being on the ball. I guess if anyone would get something done as early as humanly possible, it's a premed or medical student. Not that we're all like that, but it is unsurprising to have those kinds of people amongst our ranks.

Haha. Uh oh. I hope I don't sound like a gunner. I definitely wouldn't peg myself to be that type.

I'm actually more interested in finding a room mate and getting housing set up. Finding an affordable place near South Waterfront is going to be a hard endeavor...particularly since I want to go in an extended vacation before school starts and just get everything done now. The whole "meet your professors" thing is just a secondary bonus.

When looking for housing keep in mind that the Tilikum Crossing bridge will be opening in September which will bring light rail (very reliable) from Milwaukie and complete the streetcar (slightly less reliable) loop of downtown. This will make all the less expensive housing on the east side infinitely more accessible to the south waterfront.

They mentioned to us (who interviewed on this past Friday) that there were 3 more interview days, with the last interview date being March 18.
dang that is pretty spread out for just 3 dates left. Makes sense they are ending sooner in March since decisions have to be out 2 weeks earlier this year. Come on April 30th!

Anyone knows what day of the week the committee meets to discuss apps? I just saw bad dream and hope it turns out to be good!

Thursday IIRC
Thanks! Just waited until last minute to book a ticket to Chicago (interview on 25 and 26) and thought OHSU would have obviated the need for that travel. Alas, we will see what they decide this week. By the way, what is IIRC? Good luck!

Did anyone's interview involve a role-play scenario in which you were an actor in a given situation?

Did anyone's interview involve a role-play scenario in which you were an actor in a given situation?

Come on you know you shouldn't be asking that.

Edit let me rephrase: When you do an MMI you sign a non-disclosure agreement, indicating you will not share the content of the interviews, among other things. Providing info on the questions has the potential to create an advantage, which is unfair to the other applicants. So don't ask, and don't tell!
