2014-2015 Oregon Health & Science University Application Thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Anyone else hear back today? If so when was your interview

On the bright side, I no longer have to read "Your MD interview has been scheduled for 12/05/2014" 200x/day on the portal

Is there a number to contact admissions about remaining interviews? I'm OOS, MD/MPH applicant (portal notification now by "early March" ha). I'd fork over $$$$ for a last-minute flight, but I really would prefer not to...

Accepted today! Interviewed 12/12
Congrats! Did you get an email? When was the info posted? I thought they post decisions on either Thursday or Friday. Hope the 12/19 people can also hear something this week! Called them today and surprised that someone picked up the phone cause they normally don't and was told there were delay with Dec and early Jan interviewees. We will see if there are any news this week. Good luck!

Actually, I did not get an email. I was just checking the Portal around 5 pm eastern time and it suddenly was updated. The portal said to expect an email within 48 hours. I have no idea where they are in reviewing Dec interviews but I would assume that since Dec 5th people heard something Friday and then I heard something today it should be soon. Good luck!

Ahh, maybe they'll start rolling into February soon. Interviewed first week of February.

Anyone who interviewed 1/28 hear anything??
Did not see 1/28 on here yet but it seems like few in late Jan. got really lucky as many people in Dec. and early Jan are still waiting on decisions including myself (told there were significant delay with those dates what ever that means). At any rate, good luck!

Can anyone recommend a great bioethics book?
Any other MMI tips would be greatly appreciated. Were you nervous? I know you can spill the beans on the MMI scenarios, but were they straightforward, or something you need to really prepare for?

And another question:
Being Portland and all, did all the interviewees you met deviate from the black suit uniform at all?

See UW bioethics, around page 6-8 of forum for link.
I wore a beige suit 🙂... Was the only one in a sea of gray and black. Pretty awesome. I found this video on YouTube the most helpful, both parts,
Kevin Ahern's Guide to Acing A Medical School Interview.

I looked at the UW bioethics, it was a lot of help. I wore grey 🙂

I wore navy on top, black slacks on bottom-- most wore black, some ladies wore bright pink, but nothing too dramatic stood out for me 🙂 I second the UW's bioethics page, but also found it helpful to seriously think about your own thoughts on the matter when you read the case studies

I'm actually taking Dr. Ahern's online Biochem 350 class right now. It's great!

For those accepted , when do they send the package for matriculating ?

I just want to tell you guys how awesome it is that everyone in this thread is so kind.
Last year at PSU, around six OHSU MSIs came to talk to use about the school and the program. Each and everyone of them seemed so down to earth and nice. I have no doubt that the class of 2019 will be the same. Good luck to those of us still in the running.
🙂

Count down to tomorrow! I hope they will tell us our fate by tomorrow or Friday (this is 12/19 interview). Bracing for whatever outcome they throw at us! Good luck.

Yeah, I agree with you. I was just relaying what OHSU admish told me on the phone last Friday. Although if history is any indication, they have repeatedly pushed back their "promised response dates" (eight weeks, to twelve weeks, to sixteen weeks, to February, to mid-February, to late-February, to early-March, to early this week). I am utterly unsurprised that they have missed this deadline as well.

tldr: that's what they told me on the phone, and unsurprisingly not what they ended up doing.
Gotcha. Well. Finally, news! Rejected pre-II via portal today! Good luck to everyone still in the running 🙂

I think that acceptances are coming out on Mondays. I received mine on a Monday and both nontrad and akmcat got theirs on a Monday. Coincidence? Evidence to the contrary of the Thursday Adcom meeting - Friday decision theory?

I had to look up that term and I must say I learned something but have not seen anything from OHSU. Thought this was the day ---either dooms day or lucky day but not yet I guess.

Yeah, I was running my algorithm and it seems like decision days are all over the place (you and others are on Mondays) but there are also students who heard something on Wed, Thurs or Friday. More waiting for now! On a side note, since you have that acceptance under your belt, did you stop worrying about meaaaad school or your fate or does this thing never stop? I know pre-meds are always thinking about something even if the stars align so perfectly! Just curious! Best of luck!

Well I am no longer worried about med school! Just getting back from vacation, and now my brain is starting to spin on heavy course loads and step 1! I don't think it will ever truly stop! Relieved I don't have to ride the mcat/app cycle roller coaster again and hope you all get to hop off it too!

You need that

Definitely need that vacation because you are going to be on that never ending journey---step1, resid, and constantly taking tests either for license or some other obscure reason! But it is worth it in the end because being a doctor is great if one can find a way to enjoy the experience. Also, I hope adcoms will tell us something on Monday! Again best of luck!

There's definitely an Adcom meeting every Thursday. It says so on the OHSU website. The section that lists all the committee members by name and specialty also says that they need every Thursday for 2-4 hours.

It's possible that there's another step that needs to happen after said meeting in order for acceptances to go out.

This also makes sense since one needs a few days to sort out acceptance (easy since few people), rejection (easy since moderately few) and finally hold (takes longer since most people end up here). If they meet on Thursday it is possible they post their decision on Friday, Monday or any other day. My only concern was why they did not meet more often for Dec and early Jan students whose date of meeting conflicted with holidays.

Sometimes I wish there is better timing of application decisions. For example, schools need max of 3 months to make initial interview decision and 1 month to make final decision post interview. That would be awesome because it saves a lot of money and headaches for students. Just need to wait I guess.

Sometimes I wish their is a body akin to LCME that regulates this sort of stuff--i.e timing of application decisions. For example, schools need max of 3 months to make initial interview decision and 1 month to make final decision post interview. That would be a dream come true, unfortunately we are at the whim of each and every school. The wait goes on : (
