All us OOS mission based people, did anyone else notice that the portal says up to 12 to 16 weeks now instead of just 12? Or did it always say that and I'm just trippin ?

Yeah, it's always said 12-16 weeks

How many people 10/26 interview date and before are stilling awaiting decisions?

Be patient. I interviewed near the end of October, and didn't get notified until after Thanksgiving. It will come.

No, it used to say "up to 12 weeks"
Yeah, that is what I thought; it used to say 12 wks but now they have just made it 12-16 which means 4 months! I usually tend to think in terms of months about these things and 4 months just seems too long to make a decision on an app.

Well 16 weeks for me was last week, so it might be even longer lol

Also accepted yesterday 🙂 IS, interviewed mid October. Top choice school. I absolutely loved it during my interview and I would love to stay in Portland. LizzyM ~70. Good luck to everyone else!!

Happy Thanksgiving guys 🙂

Based on MSAR it looks like two years ago OHSU interviewed 200 in state for 100 in state spots. A friend of mine who interviewed a couple weeks ago said that they interview 500 and accept about 250 total for the 130 spots. Is that true? Based on this post it seems like most people are put into the hold pile. If most people are put on hold, how do they accept 250 people? Does anyone remember this during their interview?

This is how it has gone in the past. Everything you do for the application and the interview gets a point value. Those with point values high enough are offered acceptances (usually about 10% of the interviews). Those that score low enough are given rejection notices (also about 10-20% of interviews). The middle group is put on "hold" until everyone that can interview has been processed. Then they make a rank-list based on your score. The top scoring people are offered positions up to the number of seats left (from the automatic acceptances). The rest are put on a numbered wait list. As people decline their acceptance (why would anyone go somewhere else???), then the wait-list moves up the numbers. This can move several places all at once, or it can drag out for days at a time without movement.

Most of my class is made of people that were accepted off the hold in May. There are a lot that were also accepted off the wait-list in June and July.

A "hold" post interview is not a death sentence. There is still a good chance that you can make it into OHSU, you just won't find out until April or May. This can really hurt you if you are accepted at a school that has a non-refundable tuition deposit, or if you need to make plans to move across the country.

I really think that OHSU should get a new system for accepting people. I think that they are loosing a lot of good people by putting them on hold until the very end. There are a lot of people that will take a sure thing somewhere else while still waiting for OHSU to play the "hold game." But the school does not care. They still fill all their seats, and they still collect the tuition, and there are still people waiting in line to fill any seat that opens up.

edit: I forgot to mention that infrequently, the admission committee can re-normalize the automatic admissions score. If they find that a year is going without a certain number of automatic admissions, they will set the score to a new number. Then they would accept anyone that is above that new score off the hold list. So if the prior automatic acceptance is an 85, and you scored an 84, you are put on hold. But if they drop the automatic acceptance to 83, then you are invited to join the class at that time and not have to wait for May. This is how people have gotten off the hold list in the past.

Does OHSU allow OOS students to adjust residency status or are OOS people locked in to paying OOS tuition all 4 years?

That is what they stated at my jnterview. This year they are looking to accept 144. Let's take last years numbers I think it was 136, and made it to 52 on the waitlist. So right there 188, and they probably accepted people before a waitlist was ever created that later withdrew so they never went over the 136. Does that make sense? They also said it was 225-250 if I remember right.

Thanks! That makes sense but it just seems like a lot if ~70% of the interviewees are put on hold.

Yeah definitely but if 550 interview, then April 30th comes, 150 make the waitlist, some accepted, some rejected. It adds up quickly. Just makes for a long process if put on hold. But it definitely is nice that if you interview later you have the same chance as anyone else.

Thanks for the quick response! It's a bummer for the OOS people, but I totally understand why these policies are in place.

I live right across the border in Washington (close enough that I went on a field trip to OHSU in high school), my family has paid Oregon state income tax for 15+ years (employment in Oregon), I would love to do residency in Portland or elsewhere in the PNW and practice in Portland or elsewhere in Oregon... however in the eyes of OHSU I don't have Oregon heritage, would pay OOS tuition for four years and am treated the same as if I lived in Maine my entire life xD

Yeah, bummer.

Man... that is rough! Sorry to hear that.🙁

II just now. OOS and complete on 7/29. Fingers crossed that this isn't too late of an interview date for a hope of acceptance!

Do you have any Oregon heritage? I'm just curious because it seems like all the OOSers with IIs so far have had some sort of connection to Oregon. If not, perhaps they are finally getting around to their other mission -based groups! 🙂

Hi ohsu fans, IS, Got II yesterday (12/2) and complete back in sept (9/2) so exactly three months! After months of waiting and after stars have fallen, comes the OHSU II. I guess it is the keep portland weird meme infiltrating the admissions. We will see how it goes because just did interview at oos school and seems like I loved the experience. Time will tell. Good luck

Nope, I don't have any Oregon heritage. I guess they are finally moving on down the list!

I'm really happy you got it! Congratulations! 🙂

I am very interested in this school. OOS, no Oregon ties. I have a 32 MCAT and exactly 3.70 cGPA, but a 3.69 sGPA, as well as 3.9 graduate GPA. I hope I am still considered a mission-group applicant even though that sGPA is 0.01 point below.

FWIW, I had a sGPA lower than 3.7 but still received an II so I think you're fine! Also OOS and no Oregon ties.

Congrats!! If you don't mind me asking, what are your stats?
32 MCAT, 3.8 cumulative GPA, 3.65 science GPA... so maybe that sGPA of 3.70 cutoff isn't super strict! Good luck to all

Anyone interviewing on Dec. 12th? So excited starting to have trouble sleeping!

I felt the same way...is this your first interview? I was really, really stressed up until the actual start of the MMI. However, it was very enjoyable and quite fun, actually. Best of luck!

Yes, this will be my first interview. Definitely my first choice school! I think the lack of sleep isn't due to the interview itself, just that my dream pf medical school at OHSU is close enough to touch! I am doing the MMI first thing which I think will help my nerves by not letting pressure build up over the course of the day. Does the entire group meet for orientation and break off from there? Did you get to meet any of the MS1 students in the new curriculum? Impressions?

Yes you get to meet students in the new curriculum. The impression I got was that it is new so there are kinks, but the school seems very responsive and is constantly improving.

You stay with the group of interviewers throughout the day. However, people might leave early since the tour is not mandatory.

Yes, you get to meet a number for MS1's. My impression was that they are all excited to be there, the new curriculum is great and a step in the right direction. Like @Whatsinthebox said, there have been issues/things that have not been fully 'revealed' yet, but the school is doing a good job about addressing concerns and/or incorporating changes the students have recommended.

I spoke with admissions today. I'd borderline mission - cGPA ok, but 31 MCAT. They said they are hardline on those stats. Also, as with last year, they predict not needing to even look outside of resident/mission groups to build this class.

I know this doesn't apply to most of you, but for anyone like me who decided to give it the ol' college try, I would start to highly temper expectations. That said, all the best to those of you who have been accepted or are interviewing!!

Does anyone who interviewed already have suggestions for MMI prep? I haven't had any interviews like that yet, and I'm pretty nervous. Is the individual interview more conversational?

Hey, has anyone gotten an acceptance packet in the mail yet? I was accepted about 4.5 weeks ago and I'm in state, but nothing so far.
