2014-2015 Oregon Health & Science University Application Thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Does anyone who interviewed already have suggestions for MMI prep? I haven't had any interviews like that yet, and I'm pretty nervous. Is the individual interview more conversational?

Read my post above, along with @Graywolf's a page or two earlier.

It is fairly hard to prepare for. Not that it is super super difficult, just that it involves a lot of 'on the fly' thought processing. However, I found the UW Bioethics website to be of great help, atleast in orienting me to common moral and ethical dilemmas in medicine. Also, I found this MMI website great for timing myself and working through scenarios. Although it is geared towards Canadian med schools, it gets you in the mindset of formulating cogent opinions/responses within a specified period of time. Lastly, Oregon State University has two professors that created a joint "guidebook to medical school" and it has a fairly good section of practice MMI questions and how to approach them. Link to PDF here.

Best of luck!

try this site
http://multipleminiinterview.com/

click on the practice with free questions. Print them out (don't read them). Then find someone you like (or someone you really hate) and have them read you a couple of the questions. Do your best to answer in 10 minutes for each. Take it seriously.

Placed on hold via status update. Good luck everyone. Countdown till April begins.

Thanks, me too (10/29) but my status hasn't changed... maybe later.
Hopefully you get an acceptance! May have had a different one on one person as well. I'm MD only as well.

I was complete 9/12 also. Oos urm lizzy 70. Hoping for II but would like to have an answer regardless.
I am happy waiting for the II! They often take a bit longer partly because they don't do rolling admissions. I don't expect to hear back from them until Jan. They schedule interviews very close in usually and continue scheduling much longer than some other schools. Patience my friends, we all get our chance sooner or later.

I agree that patience is important and that OHSU takes a bit longer than most, but they definitely are rolling. I've been accepted already, as have several other posters. But other than that, I agree with what you're saying!

I think that they do what is considered partial rolling. Some get accepted, a few get rejected, many get put on hold until they rank and then they make the rest of decisions. but Congrats on being one of the accepted! 🙂

That's my understanding as well 🙂 thanks so much!

MMI is a scenario based interview where they are trying to see if you can think on your feet and can reason through issues that the admissions people think are relevant to being a competent doctor. That includes ethical decision making, problem solving, behavioral based situations etc. The scenario could be drawn from any of these areas. That being said, I found the following site to be useful (i.e. covers more than 50% of the kind of issues you will see in MMI). Check it out at https://depts.washington.edu/bioethx/topics/. Also, check out the following attachment for more info. Hope that helps!

Nope, still no packet. I'm Not expecting anything until January honestly, OHSU is known for "taking its time" with every step. The e-mail about the welcome website I got only had 17 recipients, was that everyone so far or just the ones in that batch? Thoughts about a FB group?

Yeah I was surprised the names weren't BCCed! And about how few people were in the accepted group.

Same here! We were told 4-6 weeks and it's coming up on 6 weeks this Thursday, not sure what this silence means.

I hope there will be some good news tomorrow. 🙂

Did you guys interview with the woman 1on1 person that day? I was with the male, non phd side.

So if I am a mission group applicant with no word after 17 weeks, am I still in the running? Anyone else in this position?

Well according to their portal I wasn't complete until mid-Sept, but I had submitted everything by mid-August and I haven't heard anything. I wouldn't count yourself out.

You can also call, they are extremely nice and helpful. If you haven't bugged them before now I would definitely give them a call and get some peace of mind. I wouldn't think you were out until they let you know. They tend to tell you one way or another once they look your file over.

I'm in the same boat. 17 weeks since completion! I'm missions based because of my mcat/GPA and because of my home state. Not sure what the deal is, but glad I'm not the only one!

1st year here. We just finished end of block exams. If anyone has any questions about OHSU from the inside or the new curriculum, let me know.

I have a wait list excel spreadsheet that shows past year movement if you're interested too.

Interviewed yesterday at OHSU. I really enjoyed the MMI format! The interviewers were engaging and the topics were interesting. The advice given by tymont, graywolf, and dsoz was spot on. Also a big thanks to Doctorphilic for sharing the MMI resources. You guys helped to lower my pre-MMI stress levels. My sincerest thanks for sharing your insights.

Best of luck to those I interviewed with, those waiting for decisions, and those with upcoming interviews!

Here's an excel sheet with waitlist movement from previous years. I picked it up from last year's thread and kept track of last year's movement until matriculation.

Good luck everyone!

Surprised there is that much movement well into July/August!

Hope you get in the end and rooting for you and myself and all others! Actually, my interviews in med school so far had been with women and I hope to get a man this time and counting on Karma! I doubt it makes a difference but I wonder whether who interviews you (i.e, gender, experience and academic background etc) affects perception.

From previous years and the excel sheet it seems like those on hold heard something around May 15th. This year those of us on hold are being told we will hear something April 30th! Do they usually stick to these dates firmly? 15 extra days would seem like a lot after 6 months of waiting!

Yeah, those are officially established days upon which applicants must drop all but one acceptance. So the April 30th date should be right on the money for this cycle.

Hi all! I just called and spoke with admissions. They are so nice and very helpful! I am a missions based OOS applicant and I had been complete for 17 weeks, so I wasn't sure if I had been rejected with no status change yet. She said that I actually have been invited to interview and that she was a little behind on sending out notices!!! YAY!!!

Congrats!! That is literally the best way to find out ever! Your story just made my day 😀

They'll likely stick to the April 30th date.

II today, OOS, don't think I fit any mission...

When I spoke with admissions yesterday she said they it was very unlikely that they would have to look outside of their missions groups this year, so I bet you are! Maybe by your GPA/MCAT if not your residency, or if you are URM. 🙂

Does being a URM quality as mission based?

Good question! I just looked it up and it does sound like URM is one of their mission groups!
Sweet. It looked that way to me also but I wanted another opinion. My stats are solid, 31 and sGPA of 3.89, but nothing they haven't seen. I'm oos but love the state of Oregon and would jump at an opportunity to interview there. It'll be 14 weeks this Friday since I was complete on 9/12
