If there were periods longer than 3 months, from the time you graduated from high school to now, when you were not employed full-time or in college full-time, please briefly describe your activities. (Limit 150 words)

If you are not attending college full time as of September 15, please describe your activities for the period September 2013 to July 2014. Please enter none if there are none. (Limit 200 words)

If you are not from the 5 boroughs of New York City, describe what personal experiences prepare you to live and study in New York City, and what will be your personal support system. (Limit 150 words)

If you have a specific reason why you wish to attend SUNY Downstate or a medical school in New York City, please explain. (Limit 100 words)

Good luck to everyone applying! :luck:

If I retook a pre-req at another school (got a C- the first time, so no bueno), should I list the most recent take on the secondary? It's worded "List the courses you are using to fulfill your prerequisite admissions requirements".

Ah I already have questions about this secondary
I'm not clear on whether it is necessary or optional to submit course descriptions? Also, can upper level bio courses fulfill the bio requirement? Thank you in advance to anyone who can answer these questions!

So I guess SUNY doesn't accept MCAT taken 3 years past date of matriculation. Sigh ... what a waste of $36 xD

anyone know if this question is our opportunity to talk about what we liked about the school's mission/curriculum? Or just talk about why we wanna be in NYC? 100 words is not much for both =\

I'm just gonna talk about downstate, because I think the last question is more geared towards nyc

I'm very confused about the LORs. I don't have a pre-medical committee/advisory and have 5 LORs that have already been received by AMCAS. Am I supposed to choose only 3 LORs I want to send in to Downstate?

I talked about why NYC, and a feature about downstate its self that really appeals to me .Wish I had a little longer though!

Can someone post the prompts? Thanks.

I'd think you don't want to be too vague with those 100 words, such as bright lights, big city…. They asked for a specific reason, so give that. Near home, attending a medical school that's going bankrupt, etc all works.

I doubt bankruptcy. One of the hospitals may close, tuition may rise, but it will still be a great medical school.
Yeah, a friend of mine went there a few years ago. But I do think the hospitals are in jeopardy, just not sure which one(s). The community is fighting for it to stay of course and DeBlasio has said he'll keep supporting it, if he has that option.

HI! I have another question and I wonder if any of you are in a similar situation. My school goes by the unit system which means that each course is worth one course unit. Each unit is equivalent to 3.5 credit hours. This means that two semesters of general chemistry are worth 7 credit hours in total, which makes it seem that I took less than the amount required by SUNY Downstate. What have other people done in a situation like this one? Thanks again in advance!!

Hmmm my school also goes by the unit system but for us each unit is equivalent to 4 credit hours. Did you talk to anyone at your school about how they have fared with med school apps? I have no inside knowledge about this, but it seems to me if you have two semesters w/ labs you should be fine.

Thanks! I am definitely going to talk to someone about it. You're probably right!

Hey all. I'm starting at Downstate next month. I will check this thread occasionally and try to see if I can answer any questions as I learn about the school. I can tell you about the application process here if you have any questions

After we pay, does the secondary page change to a status update thing? I paid a few days ago, but when I click the secondary, it still says I have to pay. Or maybe that's just what it does for everyone.

I just submitted and it's doing the same thing for me. I'm assuming it's okay. I am sure they will send a confirmation on Monday or some time soon. You could always call.

Hi, I visited the weight room in downstate and wondered if they had a sqaut rack or had plans to put it a squat rack in the room? They appeared to have some strange variation of a squat rack when I visited, but I didn't see anything else. Also, if they don't have one do you think the administration would be flexible and willing to put some equipment in there if students requested?

Another thing, a lot of people have said that Downstate's facilities are not that great. I visited and thought they were fine. Granted, it's the only medical school I've ever been to, but can you tell me any issues you've had there or what you think about it?

NOTE: I'm asking if these are the questions. I've just copy and pasted from last year's thread. Can someone with the secondary please confirm?

Yes - these are them

Quick Q about the secondary, where they ask you to put down the courses you are using to fulfill the pre-reqs. Their admissions requirements state you need 8 credits for Biology, as an example. I'm a Bio major so clearly, I've taken more than just 8 credits- should I just stop at 8 credits, or fill all the available slots? Also, if we are to fill all the slots available, is Biochem under "Chemistry"?

I just stopped at 8 credits - it seemed like that's what they wanted. Not sure about the biochem thing.
Thanks! I'll probably do the same and omit biochemistry. The classes are on my primaries, and on the official transcript so it's not like they won't see them.

Hello i am just applying...my committee has not written my letter yet should I "Create one letter entry for Committee letter" or leave it blank. i don't really get if the creation of a letter entry means that i will submit the entry now or that it will allow my school to receive the entry request or something idk. I am trying to submit my application do I have to create an entry for letters even though they have not been written yet?

My committee letter isn't ready to be sent out either, but I indicated on all my secondaries that I would have one coming. I think it's just to let them know and they can match it up to your file when they pull from AMCAS.

I'm writing the last question for the secondary now and have a few questions for anyone attending SUNY downstate... how are the research opportunities there, and are there any interesting global outreach programs or any international opportunities? How do youlike the curriculum changes? have you heard anything about the paired clerkships or the longitudinal primary care experience?

Thanks for the help!

So I assume if we do live in NYC we don't have to answer that NYC ques?

Is there any way online to check if our secondaries are considered complete? I submitted my application before my letters came in.

They emailed me that my secondary was "incomplete" 2 weeks ago. I submitted my letters 1 week ago and have still not gotten a complete email yet.

I called them, they said they are just backlogged and they're actually trying to sift through all of that today and tomorrow.

Hi! Does anyone know how this school handles multiple MCAT scores?

II received!

IS, application complete on 7/24

LizzyM 75+, fairly weak activities (by sdn standards) but a lot of nonclinical work experience during college.
