2014-2015 Texas Tech University - Lubbock Application Thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Yay! II (a few days ago) IS/c3.5/s3.8/35 many ECs, Research.

Do you mind sharing when you submitted your TMDSAS application and when you completed your secondary?

Give them until the end of the week. If you don't get an email about a secondary, you can try calling them. I know some people didn't get theirs by accident, but they called and it got straightened out.
Thanks for the input, it showed up today. I need to work on the whole patience concept....

Interview invitation today! I'm so excited! This is my first interview invite! 🙂 Anyone else attending an interview on 8/13????
When did you submit your secondary application?

Just a heads-up reminder in case someone is reading this and hasn't submitted their primary yet, or did very recently:

Texas schools expect you to go on the TMDSAS website and follow through the links to access the secondaries, without waiting for any other prompting.

To add on to this: both Texas tech schools have to send you login info before you can fill out/submit your secondary. I forget about A&M and UT SW even though I submitted a few days ago, lol, someone help me out.

You're right about the Texas Tech Secondaries. I think it changed this year because I don't belive they're using Merlin anymore.

For A&M and UTSW, you can just go to their website or the links through TMDSAS for their secondaries.

Unless it changed since last year (which it very well might have), you go to the Tech Merlin page click the Merlin button and then "No Merlin Account?" to create your login.

Yeah it changed. They use a new interface called "ZAP." You can't access it until the Tech schools send an email.

Any new II's? Just looking for II and the date one completed their secondary app.

does anyone know how important secondaries are? I'm obviously not going to take them lightly but I just don't know how much time applicants typically spend polishing them up and perfecting them

Also, do all applicants get secondaries for Texas Tech? Thanks!

It probably depends on the quality of your primary. If your primary is outstanding, you might not worry very much about the secondary, but a great secondary could make up for a slightly underwhelming primary.

Luckily Tech's secondary is rather short, anyway, so it shouldn't take you very much time.

My application was submitted on June 4th, but I didn't get my MCAT score reported to TMDSAS until July 14th (two weeks ago today). Still haven't seen anything about a secondary -- should I give them a call or just wait to see if the e-mail shows up today?

I would call. I transmitted on the 11th and received the secondary on the 15th.

I am not sure about the turn around time for the secondary link but give them a call if you have any questions. The admissions office folks are very friendly!

Report back about what they say so we can help future applicants 🙂

I called this morning and apparently they sent the secondary on the 18th but I never received it. I looked all over my e-mail account, trash, spam, etc. and didn't have a single thing from them. Weird :eyebrow: The guy I talked to was really nice and sent me the e-mail again, so I'm good to go! He said he was glad I called and wasn't sure where my e-mail went. It's probably lost in cyberspace somewhere.

Awesome, glad you got it sorted out. Good luck!

Quick question (which I am asking on just about every TMDSAS school thread...apologies in advance): My MCAT retake score will be available Aug. 12. Will the admissions committee wait for the new score before reviewing my application? Previous score is a 26, btw. Thanks!
I believe so, but it's also possible they like you well enough with the first score to send an II.

Is tomorrow the first interview date?! Also, does anyone know approximately how many people are at each session?! Thanks and goodluck everyone!

Are you interviewing tomorrow? Good luck!

I think there were around 25 people at my interview date, but I don't remember for sure.

You might see me there; I'll be wearing jorts, tall socks, and maybe a bandana for our MS1 kickball tournament in the afternoon. 😛

Yes, tomorrow is the first interview day. Good luck to everyone interviewing!

For the month of August, they'll have 2 interview days per week (Wednesdays and Fridays). I think the groups typically are a little smaller in August. Maybe 20ish as a rough guess?

Starting in September, they'll only have Friday interviews and the groups will be bigger.

How many interview dates have been filled so far?

I am not sure about that but at least a few weeks out I would guess. There are still lots more II's to be sent out!

Typically they say that interview season will wrap up by Christmas break but they usually have to add a couple of January dates when they see all the awesome applications of students who haven't had a chance to interview yet 😎

I wish I could interview again. Tech's interview was the best last year. I'm attending this year vicariously through the posts of others. Waiting till next August for the real deal.

Any input from those who just interviewed? How was it? I've heard from past years that everyone loved tech and their interviews, why's that?

I thought about that myself after my interview experience. I suspect that a common idea that pervades the average Texas applicant is, "What possibly could Tech, situated in a God forsaken flat desert wasteland replete with sandstorms and tumble weeds in conjunction with a supposed dearth of nighttime establishments and culturally unique festivities, possibly offer to properly incentivize me to attend? Does anyone surely expect me to eschew the aura of large metropolitan centers and instead embrace West Texas dirt?"

Perhaps the adcom at Tech is aware of such ubiquitous attitudes among the common Texas applicant and assiduously strives to abnegate such misconceptions by offering a well orchestrated and inimitable interview day experience. Perhaps it is because of the axiom of the West Texas population: they are one of the most ebullient and courteous group of people you will encounter. Perhaps it is because the medical student body is one of the most optimistic and bodacious group of individuals among all the schools in the US. Perhaps it is the logical way in which they have arranged their curriculum.

Likely it is an amalgam of the things listed in addition to other attributes of which sector9 is more knowledgable. You soon realize that picayune lures such as a healthy number of morally questionable social venues and cultural outings are fast supplanted in lieu of the friendliness, tranquility, and stability that is exuded by this school.

Got an interview for 8/20!

Does anyone know what sort of stuff is good to bring to the interview at tech? What do they provide you there?

They provide you with a leatherbound Texas Tech notebook, along with info on the school, global medicine, Lubbock, etc. They also give you an hour long tour of the facilities/hospital - girls may want to bring comfortable shoes for that part if they want.

Thanks for the insight.

They told you 2 days before your interview date?? Woah...I guess I have to be mentally prepared for that in case it happens to me too!

You'll be able to take notes with the notebook they give you, if that's your sort of thing. Otherwise, just get ready for a great time.

They're getting worse; at least I had 3 days! 😉

No I just posted today but they told me on the 7th and I could choose between the 16th and 20th for the interview. So I actually had a decent amount of time to prepare for travel and such.

Congrats! When was your application complete?
I submitted my TMDSAS on 6/12/14 and they emailed me the secondary information on 7/2/14. I submitted the secondary on 7/21/14 and received the interview invite on 8/7/14.

I'm really excited! This is my first interview and I've heard great things about their interviews in Lubbock.

Was there ever a situation where you would want to have a CV or other documents for yourself during the day? Right now I'm not planning to bring anything but you never know.

It was probably my favorite interview day.

Nope. Here (and at every other school, to my knowledge/experience) already has all the documentation needed. You pretty much just need to show up, be dressed nicely, and be ready for your interviews (which are pretty laid-back).

For all the haters: Here's the match list of last year's class. Pretty outstanding. I'm an MD/MBA student here, so if you have any questions about either track I'd be more than willing to take a break from our anatomy block to help out!! Med school is what YOU make of it as a student once you get accepted. Go somewhere you're comfortable and that you feel will attract a lot of students similar to yourself. Any environment is only as good as the people you find yourself surrounded by. Tech has been amazing so far. It will get even better with free admission to all of Tech's football games up around the corner.

P.S. Chilbo is a punk (just kidding). He's awesome. I'm glad to see him back on here this year helping out all over again.
