II today! So excited, really like what I hear about USUHS. Quick question for those of you that have been through it, what is the physical test like?

The medical exam is pretty simple - they take your basic vitals, collect a urine sample, you do a hearing test, and there's a quick visual inspection of any scars, marks, etc. You'll fill out a medical history before going in, and the doctor goes through your answers with you to make sure everything is explained. There's also an eye exam, separate from the medical, that you'll do either the same day or prior to the medical exam.

Bingo. If you're accepted and decide to attend (which you should!) you'll have to adhere to your branches physical fitness requirements.

Did anyone from the October 2nd or October 9th interview days hear back yet?

I interviewed on the 2nd and still have not heard anything. No news is definitely better than bad news, but I'm really hoping to hear something this week! This upcoming Thursday will be the start of 7 weeks of waiting. Hoping everyone else from my interview date is in the same boat as me, and I'm not the only one who hasn't heard back!!

I interviewed the 9th and I'm hoping for good news, fingers crossed!

For everyone who has interviews coming up (or happened already? I think maybe 1 set went?), are any of you currently active duty?

I want to make sure I'm doing everything correctly, but I called the security office and they said they only need a verification of my clearance not the whole form again. Wondering if there are other things like that. I did verify I need to do a DODMERB even though I'm already commissioned.

What did you provide exactly for verification? Are they able to look up an existing Clearance or did you provide documentation?

So I interview this week and they said that we should consider submitting an explanation about any grades of 'C' or lower--how much of an explanation do they expect (it's a pretty short explanation in my mind), and if I have one C and it's addressed in my personal statement should I submit it or not?

I have multiple C's and didn't submit any explanation. Got in.

For you, there's absolutely no need to submit anything. You also shouldn't have spent precious PS space to explain a single C...

USUHS looks at the applicant as a whole, and because the school doesn't receive as many applications as most other schools, the admissions committee has the time and resources to really look at applications holistically. Just be yourself during the interview, and I am sure you'll do great!

Also, if you are invited to an interview, that means the admissions committee is confident in your ability to succeed academically in medical school.

I had a clearance verification letter from my security manager but they also looked it up to verify while I was there.

Just out of curiosity, has anyone on here watched Combat Hospital, a Canadian television series about military physicians deployed in Afghanistan? I really enjoyed the show, but apparently it wasn't reviewed well.

We're just trying to debate whether or not a JPAS printout would suffice versus a separate letter. Maybe he'll just bring both..

It should. I called them specifically to ask though. Regardless of what he brings they still have to look it up to verify themselves, so I don't think it really matters.

They said JPAS was good enough - check!

Flying up to DC Wednesday for my 11/20 interview. So psyched!! 😀

We are too! I think my husband might be more excited after he finishes tonight's Human Body exam, but I'm ready for a trip. 🙂 Haven't decided if I'll be coming onto USUHS with my husband, but we'll figure it out soon enough. I'm curious, but it's up to him.

Premedspouse are you going to that student and interviewee dinner wednesday night downtown Bethesda?

ProudMD any tips?

Not much to be honest. The interviews are very relaxed, and the entire environment/atmosphere is very friendly. Just be yourself and perhaps most importantly, have CONFIDENCE. If you are invited to an interview, that means the admissions committee WANT you and that you have the capabilities to succeed academically in medical school.

Chances are that most of our applications are far from perfect, and it is easy to feel nervous about particular weaknesses on your application. However, rest assured that the admissions committee are NOT looking for the "perfect" applicant. They expect to see mistakes, failures, and other qualities that portray you as a real and genuine person. Come to terms with any concerns/weaknesses you may have and bring your absolute best to the interview. You'll do great!

I didn't realize there was one - was the info sent via email? Or are you doing the host program?

When I interviewed, the info on the dinner was sent a few days beforehand (Tuesday, maybe?) via email, and it went to all interviewees, not just those staying with a host. I really enjoyed the dinner - it was a good opportunity to get perspectives on USUHS from lots of students in a laid-back setting.

Host program!

Who emailed the info? We haven't seen anything, but I'm sure my husband would enjoy that. We get in mid-afternoon, so we should be available. We are staying with a friend, so he did not sign up for the host program (plus I'm tagging along).

Same here. The dinner with current students before the interview has nothing to do with the host program. All the interviewees were sent an email regarding the time and location (I believe it is Union Jack's) of the dinner.

And I definitely agree that it's a great experience.

Well shoot, I wonder why he haven't seen anything. He is interested in going. Who do you all recommend we contact for the info on dinner?

Sax, when did you receive the email?

Thanks all!

Just checked my email history, and I got the email Tuesday of the week of my interview. So I'd just plan on there being dinner Wednesday night (very chill, everyone pays for their own - it's totally separate from both the host program and the official interview program), and your husband will likely receive the info tomorrow.

Have a great trip!

LaceyMD, did your dinner take place at Union Jack's?

Yes, it did. I think they said they'd tried it one other place, but it hadn't worked as well, so they switched it back. So I assume they're all there?

Yeah, mine was at Union Jack's as well. It's a pretty good restaurant, but a bit pricey.

I wouldn't contact anyone about the dinner, I didn't get the email about it until I was on my way to the airport. It's very informal, no school affiliation, its some current students (not even all hosts necessarily) and the interviewees who want to attend). If nothing else it helps break the ice if your husband is at all stressed 🙂.

And yeah I got the exact same info that Lacey did, they tried it one other place but it didn't work out, so I'd expect it to be at Union Jacks as well. By the way the fish and chips was enormous, greasy, and delicious...

Thanks all! Do you think it's laid back enough to invite our friend to join us as a guest? We are staying with her and it'd be nice to not take off as soon as we get in tomorrow...if anything, her and I might grab our own table and let the hubby socialize. She's actually an AF doctor, so she wouldn't be completely out of place, but I wasn't sure how 'informal' the dinner is. Only a few more hours of work...then it's packing time.

I think it would be completely fine to do that. In essence she is your "host" *shrug*
