I do know he is shooting for either AF or Navy. He is in the AF now (as am I), but he is released to compete for any branch. So we'll see. We are just happy for the opportunity and hopefully that waitlist will move quickly (before HPSP boards) if he lands on it. I'm personally looking forward to a weekend in D.C. 🙂

being released to compete for any branch is great. I am not in that same situation so he has a little more leeway.

Enjoy the DC weekend as well 🙂
 
So now I am trying to see what all I need to do to make sure my interview is properly set up. I am afraid to try this on my own I don't want to lose my spot. @Glycereine

It's fairly straightforward if you follow the instructions on the link they sent you, but if you have any questions about any of the forms or anything I'm happy to try to answer them. Some of it will be different though because I had a few extra items and a few that didn't apply since I'm currently active duty.

I replied about 4 days later. Although we've discussed it at length I needed to check the date with work and talk to my wife about it. Eventually the answer to that is yes, but I have no idea what the timeline is.

Typically, USUHS interview just under 600 people and hands out close to 300 acceptances for a class of 170. I also believe that a lot of people get into the school off the waitlist. Odds are pretty good, imo!
 
Nope. I wasn't complete at most of those schools until like early last week. Still no KCUMB secondary. But this is enough to get me pumped! YAY!
 
Just got a new set of Service Dress Blues for my interview since I have been stationed in locations where we didn't use winter uniforms for the past 8 years.

I'm excited/nervous about my interview coming up. I'm going to do the host program I think as well, need to send that form in ASAP.

Has anyone completed an interview this year that did the host program?
 
So I have a quick question regarding pay. The military fiscal year starts in October, but USUHS starts in August. Will USUHS students not get paid until October? Or does the pay start in the month of August?

If the pay doesn't start until October, does it mean that USUHS students will spend the first two full months of school without pay?

The fiscal year is really just an arbitrary date for reporting/budgeting purposes. It doesn't mean you wouldn't get paid until then, you'll get paid on the regular pay schedule.

So I am assuming that USUHS students get paid starting August? What's the regular pay schedule?
 
I have a question regarding housing. Is it typical for two USUHS students to rent one 2-bedroom apartment/condo, splitting the rent? A 2 bedroom anything near USUHS is around 2000 per month (1900 BAH), but if that apartment is split two ways, each person only has to spend 1000 a month a rent, saving A LOT of money. Is this a common thing?
 
^^ that actually sounds like a great idea. More money in my pocket, a study buddy, yeah a roommate sounds like the best idea IMO

It all depends. Those straight out of college with no family are likely to do the roommate thing. 4/5 USUHS grads I know had roommates while they were there. They rented 3 bedroom places for 2 of them so they had a little more space though, but still saved money.

All the folks with families and even those with serious girlfriends/boyfriends may be less apt to do it. The 1 I know who didn't was engaged.

I would bea little more reserved here, I interviewed here in January to stArt the fall of 2014, was in continued contact with Dr Saguil who told me that i was in a very good position to get off the waitlist. Navy was my preference, but i told him that i would tAke army or air force. Maybe last year wasa fluke, but there were few people pulled off the waitlist, Saguil later told me that far more people were physically qualified and far less people turned down their acceptances. Its good to be optomistic though, but not overly assured of waitlist movement At USUHS

Most of the movement I saw this year was very late, as late as the last two months. That said if they extend 600 interview invites and accept 300, you have a 50/50 chance mathematically. Timing is real though too...
 
I have a question regarding the security clearance. I have a moderate amount of student loans, but I make VERY little income. However, my parents are incredibly supportive, and they are helping me making the payments (I'll pay them back once I start making a decent salary). As a result, I've never missed a single payment, and my credit score is most likely excellent. Will this present a problem in getting a clearance? I heard that debt to income ratio is something they care about a lot. So someone who just graduated from college with minimal income but moderate loans might look bad. Or am I wrong?
 
I have another question regarding transcripts. Does USUHS require your official transcripts before giving out the unconditional acceptance? Or do they ask for the transcript after giving out the unconditional acceptance?

Not sure what you mean. Do you mean for current classes you're taking or for the ones on your AMCAS application? If you're talking AMCAS, they don't need them, they have them already.

If you're talking about current classes I believe it's a conditional acceptance based on completion of classes with a ___ grade or ___ GPA for the semester (not 100% on that one though).



Also about the security clearance they don't mean the kind of debt you're talking about. They mean being in debt so much you would sell government secrets kind of debt.

Thanks for replying. I am talking about official transcripts. Every medical school requires official transcripts from students before they can matriculate. I just want to know when USUHS requires official transcripts.

If this is actually true it's news to me. From what I understand the vast majority of med schools trust AMCAS verification, which is the whole point of AMCAS so you don't have to send your transcripts 100 places.

Everything I searched for on USUHS implied the same. Now if you've taken classes since then, they will need your transcripts certainly. Someone else please correct me if I'm wrong.

I think you are wrong. Every medical school requires official transcripts before matriculation. I am nearly 100% certain of this.

Since you are currently active duty military, how's life (in general) like in the military as an officer?

Very good.

You need to be ready to work around relocation that can occur with each new set of orders, but I cannot imagine having gone any other route. The opportunities I've been afforded and the camaraderie that I've shared with other officers can't be paralleled by any other possibility I would have had in the civilian sector.

That said every command will have ups and downs, and your career as a whole will as well (probably true anywhere not just military). Keeping everything in perspective is huge. About 99.9% of the complaints I hear from people I work with, for, or who work for me, are about things that aren't military specific but they try to claim they are. If you hate your boss in a corporate job you still have to do what he says *shrug*.

By the way I have not had any bosses I hate. There are always people you'll disagree with, but you learn from both the good and bad experiences.

Quality of life as an officer is great and if you're coming straight out of college you'll be on par or even above people you graduated, pay-wise. For those who would be making more in the private sector there are compensations such as housing allowance, medical, dental, and of course not having med school loans to deal with. Of course money is not a reason to join the military, there will always be higher paying jobs out there, but they take care of you as far as needs go and my wife and I even travel quite a bit as leave allows.

You will report to fewer people and make more decisions as an officer than enlisted and you'll have more responsibilities in general at an earlier age than in most other careers.

It's a decision I've never regretted

Have you been able to get ahold of the lady to start the DODMERB process? My husband has called multiple times since receiving the II, but can't get ahold of her. Does anyone else have any ideas?

Do you mean Ms. Ramseur? Did you call her office? You can't contact her via email for the physical process.

I called I think twice before getting her the third time. Be sure not to call in the middle of lunch or too early or late in the day. I called at 7am pacific, so 10am eastern when I did talk to her.

I actually contacted her in early/mid August when I received my II. I was able to reach her on my first try. But I think things are busier now, and you might have to call her several times at different times of the day.
 
Hi Everyone, I have my interview on Thursday and have seen a few posts about the SF-86 form, but can't seem to find any information about it in my e-mails slash the website. Do we need to fill this out for our interview? All I have right now are the Sponsor Form, Lunch Form, Preference Statement and Interview Update Sheet. Thanks so much and good luck to everyone 🙂. Hope to meet some of you at the interview!

The final form at the bottom. It is on the exact same page as all the other forms.

You absolutely need to fill out the SF-86 and turn that in on the date of the interview. I suggest you work on the form right away; 2 days isn't a long time.

I have another question regarding the SF-86. Since we have to qualify for a secret-level clearance, will there be an in-person interview in the background check process?

It is possible they will call you or people you put on the form, but only usually if there is something to clear up

I missed this form too. It's because all of the other forms have a bolded word and pdf format. When you get to security clearance there is only the security clearance link.
 
October 15th is lurking in the not-too-distant future. What shall that day bring me? Only time will tell!

I can only speak from the Army perspective, and I assume the other services are the same, but...
Being allergic to peanuts is NOT disqualifying at all. History of anaphylaxis is (and would require a waiver). That is what they are getting at. You will be fine.

AR 40-501 Chapter 2 lists the disqualifying conditions for the Army.
Paragraph 2-30.j. reads:
History of anaphylaxis (995.0), including, but not limited to idiopathic and exercise-induced; anaphylaxis to
venom, including stinging insects (989.5); foods or food additives (995.60–69); or to natural rubber latex (989.82),
does not meet the standard.
