2014-2015 Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences Application Thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Congrats on the waitlist! My understanding is that you could call admissions to find out.

Was it a paper letter?
Thanks!

Yeah, it arrived via snail mail. I'm thinking of emailing my admissions counselor (Ms. Ferrell) about it. I wonder if I can send in a new preference sheet with both AF and Army highlighted as #1.

I think you almost certainly can. I updated my preferences via email (after receiving an email regarding the navy wait list) and was offered a spot in a different branch within the hour. No harm in trying!

Wow, it's that fast. I'll update it and hopefully they see it early on Monday. Btw, did you put the other branch as #1 and bump Navy down?

Essentially, there was a mass email to everyone on the navy wait list explaining the wait list, and at the end he said something like "And if you're interested in any of the other branches, please let us know" -- so I replied, stating I was very interested in both the Air Force and the Army, and would be more than happy to accept a spot in either of those branches, with a slight lean towards Air Force. LTC Saguil responded with a CC to the rest of the admissions committee, and he asked that I "reply all" to express my interest in the other branches! After that I received an email back saying "Welcome to the Air Force!" My official letter came in the mail a few days later.

PSA: Heard from an admissions officer that all services now have a wait list. Good luck to all!

Been trying to stay away from SDN so I don't stress myself out horribly.

Couple of updates for me:
Just took my OChem I final yesterday, had about 90% in the class so either have an A or B depending on how the exam went.
Just got a letter from DODMERB saying I'm not medically qualified, so I emailed Ms Ramseur about the waiver process
Spoke to the lady in charge of managing Navy conditional release letters and mine is "unofficially" approved, so just waiting on that final letter back saying it's good

Some good news and bad, but at least it's news. I felt like I'd been in the dark on several things for a while.

Hopefully everything irons out soon and I can get an acceptance shortly into 2015 🙂

Well after a couple remedials with DODMERB, my husband was deemed qualified today. He also just got his conditional letter of release resigned and extended to cover the next six months. Now just waiting to hopefully get put on the wait list sometime in January...

Anyone else doing the HPSP process as well? My husband is applying for the AF program as well just in case USUHS does not work out (USUHS is the top choice though). Getting a hold of that recruiter is not always easy...

Congrats to all the new acceptances! And good luck to those still waiting!

Congratulations to him and you!

I'm not personally doing HPSP but I have heard from others frustration with the process/communication at times.

So weird that you are having issues with HPSP as that has not been my experience at all. I emailed the Army recruiter and they have been emailing and calling me every week and even drove 2 hours to meet me. I also emailed the Airforce recruiter to ask if the scholarships differ and he emailed me and then called me the next day after I didn't email back right away.

USUHS is my first choice too but I haven't received any love from them as of yet. Still hoping.

Well hopefully my husband can get ahold of the recruiter soon, but we're just trying to clarify whether or not there are for sure two HPSP AF boards this year. We are thinking that it might be best to wait until the March board to give more time to potentially move off the USUHS waitlist (assuming he is waitlisted of course). Our concern is not competing on the January board...holding off for March board...and then having the March board cancel for some reason (budget, etc)...and then nothing. So the information gap and wait continue...but hopefully not for long. We just want to make the best educated decision...if only I could see into the future. 🙂

Budget cancelations of redundant boards are a real possibility. I can't really advise one way or another but several boards important to those I work with have been canceled in the past couple of years.

Would there be a reason to not just apply and then wait? Just wrapped up my hpsp AF application today

In other news... Week seven and no news. Why are you doing this to us usuhs?

I think they are a bit behind. I interviewed in early December and they said we should assume at least 8 weeks for a decision, but more likely mid Feb. (~10 weeks)

Yes, that has been my impression as well. At my interview day in October, they said 4-6 weeks, though. I suppose no news is good news, though! We've made it this far, we just got to keep it up!

So I'm guessing that I won't hear from the 11/20 interview until like early January, and the waiting game continues!

Well it's my understanding that at some point, if given a scholarship, he will have to accept or decline...I'm not sure how long he has to make that decision, but I can't imagine they will give him too much time to decide. If he accepts, then USUHS is out (again, from my understanding).

And CONGRATS!!!

When my husband emailed to verified they received his fax, he was told that there would be no more committee meetings until January, so I'm assuming those that got the call were on the last committee meeting of this calendar year. Here's to 2015!

Congrats to all who just got word!

Congrats to everyone that was accepted!!

I'm sticking with no news is good news for now.

I will too my friend. I'm guessing the November interviews will hear early to mid January.

So my husband got ahold of his HPSP recruiter. Apparently there has already been a board and the second board is in January. There could be a third board after that, but no guarantees. So my husband proceeds to ask him what the timeline is for either accepting/declining the scholarship if he receives one, and the recruiter told him that he would NOT put his package forward unless my husband is 100% sure that he will accept the scholarship if awarded. The recruiter said that he (the recruiter) would get in trouble if he puts him in and he declines it later. So the fact that my husband still wants USUHS as his first choice means that the recruiter won't put his package forward. Does this even sound right? Anyone else hear something similar? I'm tempted to call a different recruiter on Monday and check this out. I'm frustrated bc through the last few months of back and forth working on this package, this is the first time the recruiter has said anything like this. Plus in previous conversations, he said the first board was January and now he says there's already been a board. Oiy.

I was told the exact same thing. I'm planning on submitting in March if I haven't heard back from USUHS.

This doesn't sound right at all. I applied for the Army HPSP, and I'll briefly go over my experience. However, the HPSP thing is probably different depending on branch. Also keep in mind that I started and finished my HPSP application extremely early - I first contacted my recruiter in June and completed the whole process in September. I don't start school until next August.

I completed my Army HPSP package (finished MEPS, turned in all paperwork, submitted all transcripts/letters to my recruiter) in September, and my recruiter submitted my completed file to the very first Army Board in October. Soon after, my file was approved, and I basically got accepted for the scholarship. However, to finalize everything, I'll have to send in a copy of an acceptance letter, sign the HPSP contract, and swear in. Shortly after the October board approved me for the HPSP scholarship, I received my acceptance to USUHS. As soon as I received my unconditional acceptance to USUHS, I contacted my HPSP recruiter and told him that I will attend USUHS and subsequently withdraw/turn down my HPSP. Because I no longer needed the HPSP scholarship, I never completed my application process (as in never turned in an acceptance letter, never signed any HPSP contract, etc.). My recruiter congratulated me on my USUHS acceptance, and he told me that he'll hold out a place for me in the HPSP program in case I change my mind in the future.

Obviously, recruiters WANT you to accept the HPSP scholarship, and it does require a good amount of work and effort for the recruiter to put together all the pieces of your application and then submit it to the board. Because your recruiter has to spend so much effort guiding you through the scholarship process, it is understandable that he/she wants you to commit to HPSP from the get-go. Having said that, I HIGHLY DOUBT that the recruiter will "get into trouble" if you reject your HPSP scholarship down the road. It is possible that the recruiter simply doesn't want to help out your husband if he (the recruiter) knows that your husband will reject the scholarship down the road. It might be helpful to seek out another recruiter.

I was told the exact same thing. I'm planning on submitting in March if I haven't heard back from USUHS.

This probably varies by branch. I asked my Army HPSP recruiter if it is alright for me to turn down the HPSP scholarship if I get selected, and he said that it'll be no problem. I also told him (before my application was submitted to the board) that I was applying to USUHS as well, and that I would go to USUHS if I get an acceptance there. My recruiter wished me luck and still submitted my HPSP package to the first Army board.

Recruiters/people in the HPSP program should know that some applicants will turn down their HPSP acceptances for other options, namely USUHS.

Thanks for all the info! I wish it were that easy for ours...I imagine it does vary by branch. I just wish he would have let us know from the beginning. My husband was up front with his intentions. I guess we'll hold out to see if there is a board in March.

I guess it must vary by recruiter and office because I'm doing Army and my recruiter pretty much said verbatim what Premedspouse said.

Are you serious?

So your recruiter won't submit your application to the board unless you commit on accepting the scholarship if selected?

Premedspouse,

I, like your husband, applied to both USUHS and HPSP. Unfortunately, I haven't heard anything back from USUHS but I did recently get accepted for HPSP through the Air Force. Your husband seems to have had some bad luck with his recruiter. My experience applying to HPSP was very painless and last hardly a month from starting my application to being accepted. I have never heard of them saying they wouldn't push an application through because of USUHS and it seems like the recruiter isn't doing his job.

If you don't mind me asking, what state is your recruiter located in? When did you receive your HPSP? Congrats by the way! What timeline do you have to accept the scholarship/complete paperwork?

Yea, seriously. I'm not happy about it but there's only one healthcare recruiting office for Army in the state as far as I know.

Geez! So sorry some of you guys are having such a hard time with your recruiters. I guess its just like anywhere else where you come into contact with helpful people and not so helpful people.

My Army and Airforce recruiters both gave me some inside information. Army-wide there are 220 scholarships TOTAL every year available. Its a little less for the Airforce, but close. Each recruiter HAS to meet a quota of 11 (varies by branch) people every fiscal year.

My recruiter mentioned that yes, he needs to meet his quota, and his job is to vet out serious candidates from those just trying to have a back-up plan. However, he said he takes every application seriously and tries to get each person a scholarship whether they take it in the end or not. He was honest when he told me that if we go through this process, and in May I receive an acceptance to USUHS, that he will have to take "a hit" on his record. But that thats a chance he is willing to take. It seems some of these recruiters you guys are dealing with are not willing to put in the time and effort.

On a slightly different tangent, yesterday I got a second request for remedials..... 1 new blood test request ( will schedule tomorrow) and two requests for medical records that I sent them the first time around. Has this happened to anyone else? I'm thinking if calling the help number tomorrow
