2014-2015 University of Alabama Application Thread

The way I understood the process was that it was fairly objective. You get certain numbers of points for MCAT, GPA, and at each of the stations. That contributes to a score, and then when they feel comfortable offering acceptances for someone with your score, they do. If your score is in the score where most people have gotten acceptances in previous years, but perhaps not quite high enough that a few really great interview groups couldn't leapfrog you, they may be holding off. At our interview they said that it could be as soon as two weeks or not until April. Just one of those things.

Interviewed on 1/8 and received acceptance on 2/13! For comparison's sake: In-state with 3.9 GPA / 35 MCAT. Good luck to everybody that hasn't heard back yet and keep the faith!

Any OOS students heard back yet from January interviews?

Do you know if they take into account the college you attend or your course load? Factors like these could make a significant difference in terms of GPA.

I honestly have no idea, but I have to imagine that things like that are taken into consideration. Basically he said that high scores come up yellow on a spreadsheet, median level scores have no color, and low things are red. Those with many yellow blocks (pretty sure he said yellow lol) stand out, but amongst the others I am sure that they take a deeper look. Also, your one on one interviewer could have been made cognizant of such mitigating factors.

Long time lurker here. OOS, interviewed back on 12/11 and haven't heard anything since. Loved the school and I hope to hear some good news soon. Have many of the students from this interview date heard back?
I'm out of state and interviewed 12/11 too, I was accepted on 12/22. Don't give up hope though, there are a few more months and no news is better than being rejected or waitlisted! I'm sure you're still under consideration.

Received campus assignment today. Birmingham.
So apparently a formal acceptance letter with your campus assignment comes in the mail after you receive the email. How long after your acceptance email did you have to wait for this letter? Thanks!

I was in the first round of regular admissions acceptances back in November and have yet to receive a formal acceptance letter. I did, however, receive a campus assignment through the admissions website recently.

Accepted 12/22, yet to receive an acceptance letter in the mail but I just checked the secondary website and I was assigned to the Tuscaloosa campus!

Same for me! Accepted in Nov. Haven't received a formal acceptance letter, but status changed sometime last week on secondary website.

On another note, anyone have any idea where they are going to live next year? Apartment ideas?

I was also accepted early November and have not received a formal acceptance letter in the mail yet. Campus assignment is Birmingham (yay!). Also interested in hearing more about living possibilities for Birmingham (safer areas, in particular, without a bad drive). I have heard Homewood and Mountain Brook are good, but was interested in whether or not downtown is dangerous. Would prefer walking distance if it is safe.

I'm an undergrad at UAB right now and downtown can be a hit or miss, just depending on what area you are in. Most of the older looking apartments in 5 points aren't awful and are about a 5-15 minute walk to campus. Crowne on 10th and University Flats are two nice apartments, but can be pricey.

I am currently an undergrad at UAB and have lived here for almost 4 years. That being said, there are alot of nice places within walking distance of Volker, but there are also a few sketchy places. It'll all depend on what you want to spend. Cityville, Crowne on 10th, bristol, and several other condos are all very nice.

Thank y'all so much! That helps a lot! Does anyone know if much of our studying can be done at home? Or would we need to be at Volker for a lot of it? That would probably be my deciding factor to live downtown.

Anyone know when they make the final cutoff and notify the wait list people what tier they are in? I assume it's sometime soon...

Based on previous years, it looks like the last round of acceptances and the wait list emails went out around late-March to April. Seems to vary every year.

Me too! Accepted with Tuscaloosa assignment. Any idea of a particular field yet?

Anyone from the 2/12 interview hear anything? He mentioned it would be about 2 weeks when they would meet.

I doubt anyone that hasn't heard back yet will until April 1st due to this interview being moved back. UAB says that they will have all decisions made by that date so I would gander that will be next big decision time.

Yeah, my interview was snowed out with UAB last year and it seemed to push everything back.

According to this blog and friends that have been accepted, UAB has not accepted anyone in nearly 3 weeks. I though that UAB did a rolling admissions process. I know that the weather postponed an interview day but still, 3 weeks is a long time to go without accepting anyone. Any theories or insider perspectives as to why the rolling admissions process has virtually came to a halt recently?

The admissions committee only meets once a month, so three weeks (and more) without any acceptances is normal.

Thats a relief-I keep on thinking they meet every week and say nah-not that kid

It seems the last interview date to hear anything (according this small sample size) was 1/15. Has anyone past that date heard anything?

I don't think anyone will hear anything until 4/1. They waited until the very end last year to make decisions due to a couple of interviews being cancelled cause of "snowpocalypse" and the other fun things last winter.

Does anyone know if they are still giving out interviews?
That's doubtful since the rescheduled interviews from the weather are the last Thursday in March (the 26th). It may be a possibility that they add more applicants to that last Thursday.
