2014-2015 University of Arizona - Phoenix Application Thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
I am sorry you feel a need to advocate for Ms. Cunningham. Maybe you feel it will help promote your application by doing so. The statistics that are available from the state of Arizona don't support her claim. A majority of OOS students move OOS.
For those of us who have supported this school with our tax dollars, I find their pursuit of OOS students to be insulting.

Do you have a source for these statistics?

Are you Jpdoe34 using another profile to bang away at Phoenix again? I am very suspicious of your questions and motives and you really sound like Jodoe34..... And another person too who liked to "sign off" on threads. Do you actually have contributions to the thread or are you just here to bash on about OOS?

I advocate for logic and reasoning, which you seem to dislike. I also like to be well-informed about the schools I would like to attend, and judging by your responses, you seem to dislike these types of individuals as well.

Perhaps the committee smelt immaturity or entitlement emanating from your application. Given the mission and values of this school, just by your comments on this thread alone, I understand why you would not be a good fit. But don't fret, perhaps your luck lies elsewhere. There are plenty of fish in the sea.

I hope you will no longer disrupt this thread.

Dr. Cunningham,
Can you shed some light on how many will be interviewed on each date, and how many offered acceptances?

Thank you!

Hi, our capacity per interview day is 36 and each round of acceptances will vary from7-10 students. Good luck to all tomorrow!

Hi Dr Cunningham.

I have been on hold since early August. I was wondering whether I shud chalk this one up as rejection and, if not, do u think the chances are still good or very slim for me to get invited for an interview at your school? Sorry for being impatient....I just have to ask lol

If you haven't been officially rejected, you're still up for consideration. It has been discussed previously that some committee members hold on to reviewed apps that they would like to re-review later and, perhaps, extend an invitation at a later time. Good luck!

I would also like to see how many OOS applicants matriculated as compared to past years. What happened to the idea of taking IS so that they would stay and help the surrounding communities. Seems like your mission statement is a moving target.

How many out of state students matriculated:
Entering Class of 2011: 27% nonresidents
Entering Class of 2012: 36% nonresidents
Entering Class of 2013: 27% nonresidents
Entering Class of 2014: 31% non residents

Mission Statement:
"The University of Arizona College of Medicine – Phoenix inspires and trains individuals to become exemplary physicians, scientists and leaders who are life-long learners and inquisitive scholars and who will embrace professionalism, innovation and collaboration to optimize health and health care for all."

With regards to OOS students leaving the state or staying within it, i'll repeat what has been said multiple times already:

"Our inaugural class of non-residents entered residency this summer. 65% of the non residents stayed in AZ, compared to the 50% of residents who remained in the state."

To clarify, that means we have only graduated one class which included non Arizona residents. From this one class, more of the non-residents found residencies within AZ than did residents. We would love to provide you with more data, but it simply doesn't exist yet. If you have other statistics available from the state of Arizona that we are unaware of, please share them for everyone's edification.

To clarify further, those numbers are simply where these students chose to go for residency, not where they practice (something we won't know until they start completing their programs 3-5 years from now). I.e. An Arizona resident who chooses an east coast residency because of a lack of in-state programs in their chosen residency will be seen as "leaving the state" by the residency numbers, but they may return to Arizona to practice after their training. Conversely, an in-state resident may stay in Arizona for residency, thus appearing to "stay in-state" by the residency numbers, but may never have any intention of staying here to practice. You simply cannot tell until we get the eventual practice numbers years from now.

From a anecdotal student perspective, I can tell you that there does not seem to be any "pursuit" of out of state students, and I think that's well borne out by the admission percentages listed above. The school seeks to admit students who can successfully make it through the process of medical training and who will hopefully choose to practice in Arizona once they complete residency, regardless of their state of origin. Speaking to classmates, both originating in-state and out, many of us would love to practice here. It's an awesome place with many crucial and interesting opportunities for practice, and the community here is beyond what any of us could ask for. Many of us will have difficulty staying for residency, as for some of the more niche residencies there are only 1 or 2 programs in the entire state(each of which may only take 2-3 applicants each from the national pool), but I would not be surprised to see a majority of us returning after we complete our training.

Interview invites are sent as decisions come in from the committee, approximately every two weeks. If a committee member submits before the deadline, invites are sent live-time rather than wait.

Can you share how many more interview dates are left and approximately how many more invites are available?

We have 4 remaining days to schedule and each day can be up to 36 applicants.

Thanks for the info! I recently had an mcat score released (Oct. 15, exam was on Sept 12), and I am incredibly nervous given how far into the application cycle it is, but this helps a lot. I really didn't want to be so late and i tried to explain this in the secondary. I know you probably could not give me a clear cut answer, but if you could try, does the committee view re-taking the mcat, re-applying, and being marked complete late as major negatives, provided strong stats elsewhere (newest mcat >30, graduate degree, strong research experience, medical-related experiences, teaching and other leadership experiences, etc.)?

Thanks again!

Your application isn't viewed "late," considering it's well within our deadline. I know there is a perception that the completion date is a decision factor, but please know it is not.

Reapplying with an improved MCAT score is positive. Replying without doing anything new is where we have concerns.

OOS applicant, interviewing on 11/17. Supplemental App was submitted 9/20 and II was received on 10/13. I am extremely excited for this trip! It will be awesome to spend the day on campus and great to hear wonderful reviews from others. Thrilled for the opportunity!

You know that this isn't a 'silent rejection' because many people have actually been rejected so far. I'm sure they'd like to be in your shoes. Keep the faith!

I want to echo that! Interview seasons can be very long, and every school screens applications differently. There have been many rejections thus far, and you two are not one of them! Stay positive, because it doesn't matter when you get that interview, what matters is how you show them your personal convictions for desiring to become a physician. Any day could be a day with great news for you 🙂

Does anyone know if there is an 'unofficial' date where if we do not hear back from the UA. that it's safe to assume it's a 'no go'? - Based off of previous years info? This school seriously stands out to me in their ability to look at each applicant holistically. And trust me, I have done my share of research on schools. What a beacon of light this school stands for in their mission to look at 'unique' situations. I wish everyone luck in their app (who are still waiting) because this is definitely a medical school family I would love to be a part of.

I like to think of us SDNers as a little family. The amount of support on here is overwhelming and encouraging! We can do this guys!
Agreed!!! And thank you again, Dr. Cunningham for being so helpful and willing to answer our questions. It is very much appreciated....very much 🙂

Dr. Cunningham, are letters of recommendation looked at prior to an interview invite or after? What I'm basically asking is, how much weight do these letters have in the selection process. Would not having a strong letter lessen your chances of getting an interview invite?

Letters absolutely play a significant role in the interview selection process, larger at this stage than any other. Letters are the only evidence provided by an impartial source (pre-interview that is) and as such, we look at them pretty heavily.

Poor or weak letters are missed opportunities for you to shine.

The more you put into a letters request, the better the letter so take the initiative to meet with your letter writer and have a face-to-face convo! Ask them to write about your self-responsibility, ability to work with others, contribution to the classroom, etc. We don't need to know how well you did in the class (transcript tells us this), we don't need to know how tough the course is or how amazing the professor is.,..we want to know about YOU.

Dr. Cunningham,

I know you have said that you don't recommend more than 5 letters. Will it really hurt our application if we have 6? I recently attended one of your informational session; during that session, I think you had mentioned that having 6 letters is a bit worrisome. Please correct me if I am wrong. I have submitted 5 letters so far, but I do want to submit 1 last letter. Thanks!

I submitted a letter packet with 9 letters in addition to the cover letter. I interviewed the first week and have been offered a spot in next year's class. It would be safe to say that having more letters will not hurt you as long as they are strong and not redundant.

Really looking forward to hearing from this school. I know it’s an amazing school and had the privilege of doing my graduate research here.

Has anyone else got an invite for a different day or know the remaining dates (11/17 being one of them)?

When I scheduled mine I believe 11/17 was an available date at that time, but that was 2 weeks ago.

11/3, 11/17, and 12/8 were available when I scheduled mine last week.

For anyone who was accepted, did you receive a call or an email?

If memory serves, Dr. Cunningham said she would be calling students that are accepted.. but that could very well be a product of my day dreams of receiving an acceptance phone call lol
