2014-2015 University of Colorado Application Thread

Middle third and OOS. I assume there are two WL (IS and OOS)? Last year reads like WL movement didnt make it out of the top third... I guess I'll hold out some hope but "hurray wait till Aug to get a final answer, thats only another 4 months..."

OOS middle third too. Thought just my scores and high GPA at my university (US News Top 10) would put me higher. Hopefully some movement

Top third here, the line about high probability of receiving an offer is killer...don't want to get my hopes up for nothing! Good luck to those who have yet to hear, hope good news is coming your way today!

Does anyone have a guess to when calls or emails will go out today? This waiting might kill me!

My email from yesterday says 4:14 so I would imagine it would be near that time.

Bummer. Just got an email about 45 minutes ago, I'm waitlisted in the lower third. "Your chance of receiving an offer of acceptance is not strong in this admission cycle."

Congrats to those of you in a good position, I hope there is a lot of movement this year! 🙂
Good luck to those of you still waiting to hear back! :luck:

Sorry to hear that M12B, from what I can see in your posting history it looks like you have an acceptance to a great school anyways! Good luck going forward!

Sorry to hear that and I wish you the best of luck. It almost seems as if CU wants to see replicants who are determined (most students I have met are reapplicants), so keep at it!!

Thank you! I am very fortunate to have an acceptance at a school I love, which is why I'll be withdrawing from the WL. Best of luck to you as well!

Thank you, I was fortunate to get an early acceptance as well, but having wanted to go to CU since childhood I am just going to keep waiting, hoping, praying for a lot of movement this year. That said I feel pretty blessed to have gotten this far.

Out of curiosity if the top one-third emails said "there is a high probability that you will receive an offer" and the lower one-third said "Your chance of receiving an offer of acceptance is not strong in this admission cycle" what did the middle one-third emails say?

Hi all!

Just got wait listed in the top third. I am wondering if everyone that got this email also mentioned top priority category? Is that the same as being in the top 1/3?

I really appreciate this thread, and I'm hoping to see you all in August!

Yes I believe they all did.

"On a yearly basis we generally make from 270 to 300 offers to fill the 184 positions before classes begin in August. Many of the outstanding students accepted to our medical school receive multiple offers, thus giving them a number of schools to choose. In prior years, we have made offers from the middle one-third of our list, although our ability to predict whether this might be possible does not occur until much later in the admissions cycle."

Official rejection email received. Congrats to everyone that made it! I hope to see you in the coming years.

Bottom third. Well, guess I'll be reapplying next cycle. Wish I had something simple to blame it on and work on improving, like test scores etc, but even without that all I can do is work on dissecting it and coming up with a game plan for the next little while.

Congrats to everyone who got in.

+2
Shoot. Would've really loved to go to CU. Good luck all.
+3 Rejection email... great, I have to reapply this year. It's not like I applied to 24 school with a 34 MCAT and 3.96 GPA, and expected at least one school would accept me... Oh wait, nevermind, that's my story.

I applied with a 41 MCAT and a 4.0, and I'm in the same boat. It's a wakeup call, that's for certain.

I want to start an online study group if anyone is interested. I figure we can all skype or something once or twice a week and just help each other out. If your interested email me at [email protected]

Welcome to medical school admissions my friend. I'm sorry that this happened to you... really. It's absolutely heartbreaking to be wronged in that sort of way. And you were wronged, no doubt about that.

As you know, the process isn't fair nor is it equal. Heck I don't think it has it ever been. What it does do in some sort of twisted way is sort out some exceptional candidates and test them to see if they really want it badly enough, if they have got what it takes.

My advice, whether you want it or not, is to keep your nose to the grind stone and don't dare give up. You are obviously too bright of a star and too hard of a worker for that. I promise that if you stick with it, in the end you will make it.

That being said, be pissed off for a week or two. Be pissed off that there are people with 25 MCATs and 3.2 GPA's that were admitted. That your hard work hasn't yet come to fruition. It is perfectly reasonable to feel that way (I sure as hell did when this sort of thing happened to me). Eventually, when you start to heal and the anger gives way to solace, go back and work on becoming the best doctor you can be. Email med schools ask for advisement. Apply again with renewed calirity, vision, and vigor.

Take full advantage of your gap year to become the best physician you can be even before starting school. Study review books for step 1 and step 2. Read Harrison's internal med. Shadow a cardiologist. Go see surgery with a plastic surgeon and learn how to sew. Read a pathology book. Learn how to properly treat a new diagnoses of type 2 diabetes.

All that you do now and the attitude that you take these few weeks after your first time applying will directly impact your future patients and their wellbeing, which at the end of the day is what this whole doctor this is actually about.

So best of luck my friend. I'll be sure to look for you on the other side.

GPA and MCAT scores are not the only factor in medical school admissions. Certain numbers do not guarantee acceptance. No one is entitled to a spot.

Thinking that someone with lower scores somehow "stole" your spot and that you or someone else with great scores was "wronged" is a harmful way of thinking about this. It is a terribly painful process, but there is no one to blame. Take another look at your application and figure out what went wrong. Did you interview poorly? Do you have a bad letter of recommendation? Very little or no clinical experience? Admissions committees are looking for whole people, not just the best scores. How can you be even better than those numbers and get in next time? Congratulate the people who worked just as hard and did get in. Look forward to next year.

I would also be interested in getting into contact with others who've gone through this application cycle, to try to work out what we all need to do to strengthen our applications for next cycle. PM me if you're interested in talking.

Scarlet, I'll contact you directly, maybe we can get some communication going.

I have heard that in years past CU had a sort of unspoken 500+ clinical hours threshold. Has that borne out this year, or have things changed with the new admissions folks?

I had nowhere near that and was accepted the first date.

I haven't heard that, although my personal experience would say that could be a possibility. I was rejected pre-interview last year, and I was put on the top 1/3rd wait list this year. Biggest change in my application was 700+ hours of experience in internal medicine primary care. I'm sure there are trends, but I doubt most adcoms have too many rules set in stone that they always follow. I could be wrong though, the whole experience feels like roulette to be honest.

I have 4000+ hours of clinical experience/direct patient care. Didn't matter. I think you're right on with the roulette thing.

FWIW I had 2,500+ hrs and was accepted on the first day.

Just received deficiencies email. Should we send transcripts directly to the school or do we need to go through AMCAS?

If you're accepted you have to send transcripts directly to the school anyway, so I'd go that route.

I am interested in surveying how many clinical hours those who have been accepted had at the time of their application, if you care to post!

Not accepted just top 1/3 waitlist. My primary app listed 2750 hours about equally split in the US and abroad.

Accepted and roughly 1000. I think the quality of your clinical hours is more important than the quantity, as well as the diversity of your other activites. With that said, it's hard to prove quality if you only have 10 hours.

I think adcoms take a more nuanced view of things like "clinical hours" than some may think. I for instance had about 120 hours clinical volunteering, and 30 shadowing hours (I was accepted on 10/15). I am also in my mid 30's and have many years of experiences working directly with (often difficult) people with disabilites in both hands-on and advisory/advocacy capacities. I have multiple peers who are practicing physicians and while I have not shadowed them, I have gained a lot of insight from our discussions.

The important things I think they are looking for with clinical exposure include 1) Do you know what a job as a physician is like, and 2) do feel comfortable working closely with sick (and sometimes challenging) people. More important to the number of hours you have is your ability to convincingly demonstrate these things and to articulate what you have learned.

Edit: I would add that if you have the time to put in thousands of hours toward an activity, I would do something where you are actually helping people in need. I think for many schools (especially those that are less research driven) they are really looking for people who are committed to service.

Congratulations to all those who have been accepted. For those who received a rejection, I hope you got accepted to some other school or will be next application cycle. I know it takes a lot of hard work just to be able to feel ready to start the application process.

For those of us on the waitlist I hope the wait will be short and a successful one.

Does anyone know when WL movement is predicted to start?
Guessing shortly after the April 30th deadline, but does anyone have more details?

Last year it appears to have started in May, but then the waitlist doesn't appear to have been finalized till April. I would guess major movement after April 30th.

Out of curiosity, do any OOS applicants with multiple offers intend on matriculating at CUSOM? I loved the school, but just can't wrap my head around the COA!

I believe that would be because last year the last day you were allowed to hold multiple acceptances was May 15th but now it is April 30th?

I have been hearing April 30th is the last day to hold on to multiple acceptances. But then I do recall reading that applicants have 2 weeks after that to respond but I think it's if you receive your acceptance on April 30th. But April 30th seems to be the date per AAMC.
I think one piece of information that people with multiple acceptances will base their decision on is financial aid, given the high cost of attendance at CU. I am not sure when accepted applicants will be given their financial aid awards.

I was just going by this "If you receive an offer of acceptance from more than one school or program, choose the school at which you will enroll by April 30. Then, promptly withdraw your application, by written correspondence, from all other schools or programs that have offered you an acceptance." from the AMCAS Traffic Rules for Applicants https://www.aamc.org/students/apply...0672/trafficrulesforapplicants-2015amcas.html
