2014-2015 University of Illinois Application Thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Can those who got accepted list their MCAT and GPA? OOS or IS? Research and whether you were published and your other ECs
Thanks

3.86 GPA/34 MCAT.. Small private college in Illinois. Four year Varsity athlete, some ECs but no clinical experience or publications.

I interviewed 10/29, got my acceptance in the mail on 12/7, and I got my site preference for Chicago only a few days after I sent it in!

So I've been "Decision Pending" since my interview in October... I assume this is bad news, but do they hold off on waitlist and/or rejections post interview until a certain date?

You might still be okay. When I applied last year, I interviewed in November and had 'Decision Pending' until March when the called me in for a second interview. There may be hope.

Does anyone know if they are planning on sending out the letters before Christmas or if they are waiting until January to send them out?

Does anyone know if there's an accepted group for the incoming class yet? Also, does anyone know if they'll be sending us a packet with whatever else we have to do as accepted students?... or does that not come until later in the spring?
I was also wondering the same thing -- I haven't received anything yet after getting my site assignment (Chicago). I'm also not sure about a FB group yet or any info (if there has been any given out) about campus visits in the spring, etc.

Earlier in the thread there were a few people (not many) that said they had been rejected.

they dont do silent rejections. i was rejected OOS about 2 weeks ago. but it was via snail mail. no email or status change notice. I havent checked my online portal since then to see if it changed the same weeK I received the letter

Go way back in the thread. If you are rejected, the portal will say something like "Final Decision Made" and then you get the snail mail rejection. Unless @miszfifi820 had a different experience.

Thank you all for the info. It's just so damn frustrating to still be "in progress" after having been complete for so long. :boom:

If anyone receives any acceptance mail, post on here ASAP. :angelic:

So as far as anyone knows, getting the additional correspondences tab means an acceptance right? Sorry for the pre-med neuroticism 😛

I'm concerned because I've only seen one person who interviewed in December have a status change, is that correct? Unless there are SDNers who had a status change and just haven't posted. I interviewed on 12/12 in Urbana, and I'm still Decision Pending. Wondering if anyone else who interviewed that week are also Decision Pending or if I'm just not good enough for this month's acceptance...

Logistics question: if you get offered a scholarship that must be accepted/rejected ASAP (i.e. before everywhere else releases scholarship & financial aid packages) and you accept said scholarship, are you then committed 100% or can you still turn them down before April 30 without having bad blood???

You can still turn them down if you decided to go to another school. They can always give that scholarship to some one else. There is no shortage of people longing for acceptance/scholarship. So don't worry

I interviewed with you and am still decision pending also... maybe they just didn't have time to get to our group?

Hang in there. They probably haven't gotten to your group yet.

A second interview? What was that like??

I am also in this decision pending limbo. I interviewed 10/20 ish and am still decision pending :O

I asked this question as well. But no dice :borg:
it usually does but there is at least one case where it didn't mean acceptance. statistics on your side though; i would say cautiously hopeful if you have additional correspondence

I interviewed in Chicago last week, and I just wanted to share my experience for future interviewees. For those who don't know, the interview format in Chicago is three one-on-one interviews with 3 individuals, usually a physician/faculty, med student, and one other of either-- 30 minutes each. However, all my interviewers left 5-10 mins for my questions/comments/concerns.
Overall the day was super relaxed and so were the interviews. I interviewed in the AM session with 2 medical students, an M2 and then an M4, and they were both really nice, straight forward, and relaxed. They asked the typical questions: Why did you decide to pursue a medical education? What past experience led you to healthcare? Why did you decide on being a medical doctor as opposed to another medical career (dentist, pharmacist, nurse, etc.)? What do you do in your free time/how do you relieve stress? What would you do if you couldn't become a physician (something completely outside medicine, healthcare, or science)? What's the biggest problem in healthcare, in your opinion? That kind of stuff.
The third interview is with a faculty member. I happened to get an emergency med physician, whereas other students interviewed with the associate director of admissions or other admissions staff. I was really lucky to be paired with her because I felt like we had a lot in common! I'm a certified EMT-B, and so she asked me about that experience -- what I thought about healthcare today, and good/bad experiences I've had either as a patient or clinically. Then she also turned out to be involved in the Global Medicine program at UIC, so she was really interested in the med/public health brigade I had gone on to Honduras. She asked me positive and negative aspects of the healthcare strategy we had implemented there, and if I thought it was sustainable. And that's about it!
Overall I thought the interview with the physician was much more comfortable/natural and seemed more conversational, which surprised me. I think this is because we did have a lot in common, and she focused more on my resume/essay experiences, personal experiences I've had, as opposed to the med students which asked all the self-reflective/critical thinking questions. With the med students I felt like I was a bit more awkward and my answers weren't as easy flowing because of the nature of the questions.
After my 3 interviews, the PM session interviewees arrived, we had a short Dean's welcome/orientation, and finally a tour of the campus. After the tour, the AM session was free to leave. I was in one of the last interview groups before the holiday break, so they said we probably wouldn't hear anything until mid-late January at the earliest.
Anyway! I hope this helps some of you! GOOD LUCK 🙂 PM me with any questions! :xf::heckyeah:

Could anyone let me know if they have the precise wording of one of the questions from the supplemental application? I would like to see if there was any reference or specific mention of traffic violations? I would greatly appreciate it!

They don't ask anything about arrests or things in your supplemental

I interviewed in Chicago on 11.16 and I still have Decision Pending... If I was accepted would it have changed to additional correspondence? Does anyone have any insight to this?

Thanks

If it's still decision pending, then they haven't made a decision on you yet. It will change to final decision made once they have made a decision on you either way. Hope this helps! 🙂

okay cool... thanks for the help!

For people who interviewed, what were your general impressions of the students at UIC, the facilities, etc?

I interviewed the same week so you in Chicago and I am still pending too. So you are not alone! I have a feeling it wouldn't change until the end of January.

+1, same week. Feels like I've been waiting forever!

I did my undergrad at UIC, so I already know the campus really well, and personally, I love it. The Chicago medical campus is very big, and they have a lot of nice facilities-- especially with recent construction/renovation. My tour group got to see the brand new student study floors that will be opening this Spring that were just redone. They are superrr nice and modern. Since the actual medical school is quite old, most of the building needs some work, but hopefully the rest of the floors will undergo renovations soon.
As far as people, the Chicago campus, considering it's in Chicago, is extremely diverse. There are students from all backgrounds and cultures. The medical students I spoke with were extremely nice and welcoming. They were very laid back with their questions and conversations, and really wanted to share with us their experiences and tell us about the school. Overall, it was an awesome experience, which I had expected. I definitely will be attending here next year, if given the opportunity.

I called them today. They said people who got the final decision made on 12/18 status won't receive their letters until the new year.

did they say when in the new year? technically jan 1st is 2 weeks after the 12/18 date and they said to wait 1-2 weeks for the mailing.

They said there's no one working this week, so they'll probably send them out next Monday or Tuesday I'm guessing

Who starts the facebook groups for the respective classes? I found groups for the 3 classes preceding ours, but none for the class of 2019.

I interviewed in late November, and I got the "Decision Made" on my status page two weeks ago, but the words "additional correspondence" only appeared in a text box at the top right corner (and not as a tab) with a tiny empty box next to it. Is this what my status page is supposed to show up as if I'm likely accepted? Thanks!

:writer: Let me write you a prescription for chill pills.

As far as I know that is the additional correspondance "tab". They have to manually send the criminal background check emails and they are out of office right now for the holidays.

Who volunteers to be the human sacrifice it is going to take to have them send out letters by the first half of this week?

Do you guys think only the people who saw status changes would receive a letter in the mail? Is it possible that the status hasn't been changed online but that a decision has been made?

It definitely seems like there are lots of people who haven't gotten a status change who were expecting one after the Dec meeting. By my count, there have only been about 5 people on here who saw a change, and that's wayyyy less than the number of people I counted that had interviewed after mid-November.

You'll find out soon enough.

Lol! You guys crack me up.... That poor office dealing with all these psychotic pre-meds.
..............
Sooo.... I interviewed on 12/19, how long does it take for your status page to go from "Interview scheduled...Evaluation not complete" to "Decision Pending", relatively speaking? :scared:

II TODAY!!!! First choice and my SO's school, I could not be more excited!!!! A reach for me because I'm OOS with low stats but strong ties to Chicago/IL. nontrad 3.3x cGPA, ~3.1sGPA at top 10, 31 MCAT.

More info...I submitted my app back in early-mid July, and have been "Applicant in Process" since around 12/15. I'll be at Chicago 1/26 in the AM group!!! 🙂

So uh...I interviewed in Rockford in mid-November and my status is literally still at "Decision Pending" :bored: . I thought maybe it was just taking them longer because of the holidays, but after constantly seeing so many of you guys with status updates who interviewed after me, I have no idea what to think. Anyone in a similar situation or have any insight? It's been almost 2 months now... 🙁
