2014-2015 University of Michigan Application Thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Hi Everyone,
I'm currently an MD/PhD at Michigan and live in White Coat area. I also serve on the Munger committee and will largely determine the application process, rooming and the multidisciplinary vision of Munger Residences. Feel free to email me at [email protected] for clarifications or questions regarding Munger.

The goal is to create an environment where students from the various professional/graduate schools can come together to learn from one another. Developing literacy in other disciplines and a competency in dealing with professionals from other fields is becoming increasingly important in Medicine. Therefore, I would urge anyone interested in multidisciplinary education to take a hard look at Munger. Programs will be begun to spark this multidisciplinary approach including invited guest speakers, resident specific case competitions and group activities. The advantage of starting in its inaugural year is to be able to shape what Munger Residences becomes. As for survey sent to grad students last year, this was only to Rackham students (1 of 19 grad schools) and the details of the building were largely unknown at the time, so I would take it with a grain of salt. As of right now, there is tremendous interest in the building from the law school and the Ross school of business due to the proximity of the building to the schools and as of right now, we will have to limit law students and b school students. That said, I personally see a huge value added by being exposed to students from other schools, if only to expand your network.

There will be an application process that will be released in the next couple of months to incoming student. The building is slated to be finished in mid-July.

Here is a video of a walkthrough of the Residences currently under construction.

More information can be found at the beta version of the website munger.testingserver.us, which will be made public soon.

Here is a quick run down on some important points:

Pricing is $850 for a 7 bedroom suite and includes utilities, electricity, internet, and laundry.

Each suite has 3, 6, or 7 bedrooms with 4, 7, or 8 bathrooms, respectively (each person has a private room and bathroom with an extra bathroom per suite), and a laundry unit.

Most apartments have over 2700 square feed (which is the size of a large house) with 400 of it as personal space.

The Residences is located on the center of campus by the Union and is 0.7 miles from the Medical School (15 minute leisurely walk or a 6 minute ride on either Commuter North or North Campus lines that each come every 12 minutes).
You may choose to the individuals you share the suite with; however, a requisite number of disciplines must be represented depending on the suite size.

There will be parking one and half blocks away from the Residences for cars (shuttle service to the lots is also available).

Thanks,
Warren

Congrats!!!

Was your status on the portal "On Hold"? I've been under review for months and not sure what to think.

Also, did you just receive an email? Or did you find out by checking the portal?

Good luck to you!

II just now too!! But I thought I was rejected here?? This is the most excited while confused I've ever been 😀 Complete 8/29, II received 12/8, LizzyM >76

Edit: Now that I read @Iceandmedicine 's post fully I realize I must have been on hold, even though the online status message sounded like a rejection to me. On hold 10/30

Yes, my status was "On Hold" (I had received an email about being placed on hold) and today, I got an email about the interview invite as well.
Hmm Im not sure what to think about you still being under review either, but it can't be worse than being on hold? Good luck!

II just now!!!!:zip:
I thought it was over after the "reviewed your file and regret to inform you ... not at this time" email that I got last week. Great news for a lot of people today!

Complete: 10/23. LizzyM 71, non-trad.

Wow, this is wonderful news a week after devastating news. From one non-trad to another, good luck (and enjoy Ann Arbor)!

Hi,

I'm an accepted student to the University of Michigan in the current cycle. Does anyone know how UofM views grades after acceptance? I'm in an incredibly tough upper level science course and after being out of town for interviews so often this past semester I have a pretty poor grade going into finals. Lets just say I will have to work really hard to get into the 80% range. Would appreciate any feedback.

haha me too; my poor grades are more due to lack of motivation though 😛

Good morning wolverines!
So just to double check, when you are accepted to U Michigan, there is no additional paper work to officially hold your spot, right?

Decision deferred again today, this time until March. How long this wait seems sometimes:

Same! It honestly would've been better if they told us at the beginning that we wouldn't hear until March. Getting nervous/excited up until the decision days and then getting deferred TWICE is just frustrating. I want to be mad, but at the same time I love UMMS so much that I'm just grateful to still be in consideration.

^For those of you who got deferred, hope you guys don't think badly about yourselves or your interviews! Y'all are probably super amazing for getting interviews in the first place (and even if you didn't get an interview-- going through the MCAT and being pre-med is a ton of work you should be proud of anyways). A lot of people here have very strong in-state ties or they went to U of M or their parents did or their specific type of research or work was something that really caught a committee member's eyes, etc. This factoid applies to all med schools of course, but probably a bit moreso for U of M b/c it has the highest number of alums in the world! Good luck & Go blue!

I just want to say that i enjoy your humorous attitude and your funny pants story on MDApp. It would be nice to have classmates who have that kind of endearing quality. Best of luck! The living deads are physically fit for the long haul!

Thank you for the kind words, FFH. I think it goes without saying that whatever school and whatever patients end up having you will be very, very lucky.

Haha, thanks! Definitely a lot to learn, a lot more to improve both personally and professionally in med school. It'll just be a better journey if it's shared with people who take the troubles in life with a lighter heart.

Hang in there, @redshortshorts and @Scribblers and @Ersh and the rest of the to-be-accepted!

They have updated the admissions tracker. (So cool that they do that.)

Their secondary deadline was 11/30, so could this be the final application total?

4512 OOS + 1202 IS = 5714. According to the tracker from last year, they got 4621 OOS + 1152 IS = 5773.

So were the warnings about an unprecedented number of applications unjustified?

There was always the question of whether the applications were just frontloaded relative to last year. A data point supporting this: UMMS offered 114 interviews to people whose applications they received in June last year, but have offered more than twice as many, 236, this year.

Any wait-listed people on here? Think there is any hope for us come May 1st?

Sorry to be the bearer of bad news, but they haven't had any waitlist movement for a few years. My class of 177 is more than the target of 170 (they offered incentives to defer admission both 2014 and 2013 due to overenrollment).
Best wishes to you on your other choices.

Late to the party, AMCAS went out a lot later than I wanted it to, and I just found this site. Go figure.

Still waiting for a response after the initial application. Went to U-M grad a few years back, switched careers. Wife went to anesthesia residency at U-M and we still own a house outside A2. Really hoping for something, but following the thread, looking like chances are slim. Still, no news can be good news.

Never can tell. Best of luck to everyone out there. It's great to be a Michigan Wolverine (hopefully again)!

...incentives? What are we talking about here? Cookies, Zingerman's gift cards, season tickets to the Big House...? 😉

No, real stuff, like $10K scholarships. Read the threads from the last couple of years. As an admitted student, I got an email about deferring admission. They probably won't overenroll this year though, as 2 years in row is quite unusual.

I didn't know they overenrolled both of the last two years - wow!

Maybe that's why they have adjusted their acceptance quotas. Last year it was 107 IS + 272 OOS = 379. This year they're aiming for 120 IS + 240 OOS = 360.

Any IS people still waiting to hear back? These admission tracker numbers are just diminishing hope by the day...
Congratulations to all those that were recently accepted! I've from Ann Arbor and have toured the med school/hospital system numerous times... It is absolutely one of a kind.

Not sure if I'm considered IS or OOS - I live OOS, but grew up in MI and went to UM for undergrad. If I attend, I'd be considered IS.

Anyways, I'm still "Under Review" and haven't heard a peep since I submitted my secondary.

The man who always speaks with data.\

Consider how successful my co-interviewees have been--only to speak how good the adcom at Michigan in selecting students--I suspect that this year there might be WL movement. Especially when they reduce the number of acceptances giving out.

I wouldn't count on it. At my interview, we were told that there are fourteen (I think) students who deferred last year waiting to start.

Wow. I did not know that. I knew there were some deferrals but I didn't know there were that many! I take my words back.

BTW Michigan was my favorite interviewing day <3 to those still yet to visit, get excited to breathe blue and *maize* 😀

Got a package of chocolate from the admissions office today and I'm definitely considering withdrawing from every other school... as far as criteria for choosing a med school goes, how can I go wrong with one that sends me chocolate?!?!! #goblue #chocoholic #michiganlove #holidays=made

lol I got the very same very pleasant mail today! Congrats!

I can already see it 4 years from now..,

Residency director: So why did you choose to go to UofM?

Me: Well because they were the only school to send me a box of chocolates

Edit: made this post based on a text from my parents saying you got chocolate. Didn't realize it was just a bar of chocolate. My expectations were too high

Does anyone know what is the average USMLE score of med students at U Mich?

Avg step scores are on that now? How recent is the data? Up until now I haven't even bothered looking at step scores when comparing schools but now I'm curious

They've been available for premium subscriptions. The scores seem to be from 2012 data, but it's possible they're more recent. Here's a useful table that someone compiled - https://anastomosed.wordpress.com/2014/03/15/step-1-scores-at-top-schools-2012/. Mich Step 1 is a bit on the low side compared to similarly ranked schools, but it could just be from them not teaching to the exam.

Just patiently waiting and reviewing the 12/16 tracker update.

There are 55 interview offers left (27 for IS and 28 for OOS) and the adcom stops reviewing/inviting candidates in a few weeks.

Fingers crossed, but things are winding down.

Thanks for the table, super useful. I also found a thread on SDN which was created back on 2008 discussing the same matter. Back then they mentioned average scores of 237 for U Mich! Why did the average score dropped so much over the past few years (assuming that their source was valid at that time)?!

I could be wrong, but with small class sizes, I can see these averages fluctuating very easily from year to year
