Hi Everyone,
I'm currently an MD/PhD at Michigan and live in White Coat area. I also serve on the Munger committee and will largely determine the application process, rooming and the multidisciplinary vision of Munger Residences. Feel free to email me at [email protected] for clarifications or questions regarding Munger.
The goal is to create an environment where students from the various professional/graduate schools can come together to learn from one another. Developing literacy in other disciplines and a competency in dealing with professionals from other fields is becoming increasingly important in Medicine. Therefore, I would urge anyone interested in multidisciplinary education to take a hard look at Munger. Programs will be begun to spark this multidisciplinary approach including invited guest speakers, resident specific case competitions and group activities. The advantage of starting in its inaugural year is to be able to shape what Munger Residences becomes. As for survey sent to grad students last year, this was only to Rackham students (1 of 19 grad schools) and the details of the building were largely unknown at the time, so I would take it with a grain of salt. As of right now, there is tremendous interest in the building from the law school and the Ross school of business due to the proximity of the building to the schools and as of right now, we will have to limit law students and b school students. That said, I personally see a huge value added by being exposed to students from other schools, if only to expand your network.
There will be an application process that will be released in the next couple of months to incoming student. The building is slated to be finished in mid-July.
Here is a video of a walkthrough of the Residences currently under construction.
More information can be found at the beta version of the website munger.testingserver.us, which will be made public soon.
Here is a quick run down on some important points:
Pricing is $850 for a 7 bedroom suite and includes utilities, electricity, internet, and laundry.
Each suite has 3, 6, or 7 bedrooms with 4, 7, or 8 bathrooms, respectively (each person has a private room and bathroom with an extra bathroom per suite), and a laundry unit.
Most apartments have over 2700 square feed (which is the size of a large house) with 400 of it as personal space.
The Residences is located on the center of campus by the Union and is 0.7 miles from the Medical School (15 minute leisurely walk or a 6 minute ride on either Commuter North or North Campus lines that each come every 12 minutes).
You may choose to the individuals you share the suite with; however, a requisite number of disciplines must be represented depending on the suite size.
There will be parking one and half blocks away from the Residences for cars (shuttle service to the lots is also available).
Thanks,
Warren
