2014-2015 University of Michigan Application Thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Just got my estimated financial aid package, and I have to say I think it's very generous (I say "think" because I haven't gotten any other packages yet). I did have a merit scholarship, but everything included I'd graduate OOS with far less than 100k in debt. Needless to say I'm pretty elated!! 🙂

Including living costs?? I have IS tuition and a scholarship, but under 100k still seems unrealistic!

when did you ask for your estimate?

Have other people been getting their estimates back? Is the general consensus that the financial aid is good (if you didn't get a scholarship)?

Got my fin aid estimation back today: full tuition merit+grant=cost of attendance!! No debt!! I'm in shock
If you don't mind, how long did it take for you to get the estimate after you sent in your request by email?

Congrats by the way

Thanks Ducky! Happy Easter! Got it back after about a week.

Congrats!! I was also really happy with my package...do you know how much of an "estimate" this is? Like how much this could fluctuate from the reality?

Thanks @tenniseagle92 , I think it would be the number they'd use if we matriculate. The fin aid office probably just ran our financial data through a UMMS specific formula. The number should hold, since the formula is likely the same now and later. Unless by the time you matriculate, there has been some kind of correction made to tax already filed or FAFSA, then I guess they'd adjust the need based grant.

Anyone know how many Dean's scholars there are total per class? And what is the perceived level of prestige? Making some tough choices, appreciate the help!

What is a reasonable amount of rent to pay in Ann Arbor? I'm looking at a place which is about $1,000 a month plus internet and electricity (with a roommate). Is this on the high side?

Based on the info on FB page, that would be on the high side. I've seen amazing room for rent about $650.

The official number is 10. Although somehow among the little cohort of people I know, 4 have received it, which is either coincidence or there are more than 10 given out with the hope that some will decline. If my memory serves me well from a couple years ago, the ones that were declined by the recipients are returned to the pool and given to someone else.

I hope that's high! I'm hoping to pay $700 max utilities included! Hopefully I'll find some roomies at SLW 🙂

My brother is an M1 and lives in a 3 br apt with 2 roommates, and his portion is less than $600/month. Ann Arbor is relatively cheap. $1K is for luxury accommodations. Go BLUE!!

Has anyone who registered for SLW heard back about getting a student host or not? I'm trying to figure out if I should make alternative housing arrangements.

Withdrawing after much, much deliberation. Will be turning down a Dean's scholarship, hope it gets re-allocated to a fellow SDNer.
Same here. Clicking the button to withdraw was so painful.

If I got a significant merit scholarship from Wayne State, does anyone think that Michigan would be willing to match even $1k from that? My EFC is 0, but I haven't gotten any aid from U. Michigan at all so far, so I'd be really appreciative for some. Has anyone tried that or know someone who has?

If your EFC is 0 (and you don't have extra financial resources such as a trust fund set up for you) according to UMMS's formula, you should be expecting pretty significant need based aid. I think they said in the most extreme case, it can be full tuition. They won't "offer" the aid right now because they only do the calculation after April 30th. But if you email/call Mary Jo Blinn, or any fin aid officer for that matter, they should be able to give you an estimate of what to expact fairly quickly. Especially if your situation seems so simple and if you absolutely needed it to make decision.

Usually if you are sure that your family income is so low that your EFC would be zero, then you can ask the school's fin aid office, "hypothetically, what's the amount the student would get in need based scholarship if they are calculated to have zero EFC?". Most schools are able to tell you a figure immediately.

Honestly I wouldn't count on it, I was told that this could happen but I've been talking to admissions at UMMS for a while now trying to get the same thing. I've gotten several merit scholarships from other schools and I've been trying to see if Michigan would offer me anything extra because of it, but so far they haven't. They actually just told me on Thursday that there was no additional scholarship money available, then it seems like they sent out several scholarship offers on Friday... 🙁. I also have an EFC of zero and did not get any significant aid from Michigan. I think we may be out of luck 🙁

I won't comment on matching scholarships as I had not made any attempt and luckily I didn't have to. Michigan not being able to match you award is not a determination of your value, after all, the funding is limited, it would be unrealistic for school to match each and every student's merit awards from other schools.

As far as need based aid is concerned, I have received 23k for M1 year (which is only 9month) need based grant in addition to the merit awards. Not sure if it is possible to get more, but 23k isn't bad at all in my view. It's 40% OOS tuition.

EFC is, unfortunately, calculated based on a very arbitrary formula. Sometimes students who will never have any assistance from their family, will be calculated to have a large EFC using that particular school's formula if his or her parents have large amount of assets or something. It's not the fairest way to approach this, but alternatives are few. Stanford and WashU have permitted students to be considered financially independent once they reach 30. Michigan will consider you financially independent if you have paid 10 year worth of tax on your own.

Thanks Friendly! It was great to get to know you. Obviously I am sad that we will not be at UofM together but I know Yale is getting an awesome med student! Look forward to staying in touch!

Hey guys-- if there are any current medical students/ppl knowledgeable about the "White Coat Ghetto" area-- I'm looking into getting housing and I was wondering how people here felt about the noise level in the Riverhouse/Island Drive area? Is it like really loud if I'm a very light sleeper? I've seen the area, but I know helicopters come throughout the night, the train's really close, and I've read a few bad reviews about the noise level at Island Drive before. Just curious before I sign a lease! Thank you so much!

I'm a current umich student and had a similar situation. I highly doubt Michigan will match what you were offered from Wayne, but there is a chance you could get something (though there is also no guarantee you will get any). Need based aid is huge though and it sounds like you might get a lot of help that way.

I didn't end up getting any additional funds when I tried, but still ended up choosing Michigan (for many reasons). Feel free to PM me if you'd like to know any details or have questions.

HHHM, maybe edit your post (white coat ghetto). Anyway, My M1 Brother lives in Island Drive, near the back. No complaints from him about noise. If you live by the river or near the front, maybe it is worse there. Great location you can't go wrong, not like undergrad apartment complexes, which can be noisy on weekends. Best wishes and go blue!

We all loved the experience at Michigan and appreciate how the admission had really gone out of their ways to make this process easy for us.

Although the best way to reward the hard work of the admission would be going to UMMS and to thrive there, I'm sure like me some of you had to regretfully decline the offer for many other reasons at this stage of life. Few of us who share similar sentiments want to collectively thank the admission, particularly Carol. Welcome to chip in. Please PM.

Very nice sentiment, however be mindful that employees at U of M are not allowed to accept gifts, except for nomial amounts of food to be shared among the department (nominal means less han $20 or so). This is per my parents, who are staff and faculty at UMHS.

Isn't that mostly for patient/hospital staff transactions?

Thanks for the reminder. Say hi to your brother. I'm not sure if I ran into him or not during second look. I think the idea is to buy something really small to begin with. It's not about the value per se, it's the thought that matters. Like how we feel when we got the chocolate and the holiday cards.

We are still waiting for more people to chime in!! although I'm sure most of the targeted audience for this message probably already stopped following this thread 🙁
