when did you ask for your estimate?
If you don't mind, how long did it take for you to get the estimate after you sent in your request by email?

Thanks @tenniseagle92 , I think it would be the number they'd use if we matriculate. The fin aid office probably just ran our financial data through a UMMS specific formula. The number should hold, since the formula is likely the same now and later. Unless by the time you matriculate, there has been some kind of correction made to tax already filed or FAFSA, then I guess they'd adjust the need based grant.
Based on the info on FB page, that would be on the high side. I've seen amazing room for rent about $650.
The official number is 10. Although somehow among the little cohort of people I know, 4 have received it, which is either coincidence or there are more than 10 given out with the hope that some will decline. If my memory serves me well from a couple years ago, the ones that were declined by the recipients are returned to the pool and given to someone else.

My brother is an M1 and lives in a 3 br apt with 2 roommates, and his portion is less than $600/month. Ann Arbor is relatively cheap. $1K is for luxury accommodations. Go BLUE!!

If your EFC is 0 (and you don't have extra financial resources such as a trust fund set up for you) according to UMMS's formula, you should be expecting pretty significant need based aid. I think they said in the most extreme case, it can be full tuition. They won't "offer" the aid right now because they only do the calculation after April 30th. But if you email/call Mary Jo Blinn, or any fin aid officer for that matter, they should be able to give you an estimate of what to expact fairly quickly. Especially if your situation seems so simple and if you absolutely needed it to make decision.
I won't comment on matching scholarships as I had not made any attempt and luckily I didn't have to. Michigan not being able to match you award is not a determination of your value, after all, the funding is limited, it would be unrealistic for school to match each and every student's merit awards from other schools.
HHHM, maybe edit your post (white coat ghetto). Anyway, My M1 Brother lives in Island Drive, near the back. No complaints from him about noise. If you live by the river or near the front, maybe it is worse there. Great location you can't go wrong, not like undergrad apartment complexes, which can be noisy on weekends. Very nice sentiment, however be mindful that employees at U of M are not allowed to accept gifts, except for nomial amounts of food to be shared among the department (nominal means less han $20 or so). This is per my parents, who are staff and faculty at UMHS.
Isn't that mostly for patient/hospital staff transactions?
