Unfortunately, you're on your own for housing (this is not one of the U's strengths). There is a hotel directly across the street from the med school called The Commons. It's also right by a light rail station, so getting to the two downtowns for exploring would be easy. It may be pricey though...

On a related note, does anyone want to start a student hosting org next year (assuming we get in?)

I'd be down for that, assuming that we both are admitted and matriculate. I'm actually really excited to receive an II as an OOS, considering this is fairly early in the admissions cycle. I was reading on the school's website about different scholarships available and one granted in state tuition to OOS students, so that would be cool. Are you IS, and is this your top choice school to attend?

I am IS, and I'd be so happy to go here for a lot of reasons. I interviewed on Sept. 5 so hoping to hear back any day! So far though it's all quiet on the midwestern front...

So as an OOS I am excited about the school based on it's location in Minneapolis and its reputation. Sell me on some things about the school that I might not be aware of but are major selling points.

So one of my major reasons is that my family is here, but you really shouldn't use that in your interview...

For real though, the U is great pretty much no matter what you want to do. Research is big here (clinical and bench--there are new basic science buildings going up as we speak that are gorgeous). With the flex MD program, you can take a year off after second year to do an additional degree like MPH, go travel, do research etc. It's great for those who just want to do everything.

For clinical rotations, you can apply to programs where you spend nine months in one hospital doing several of the core specialties. There's a rural option and a newer inner city one. My tour guide did the rural one, and she said she got to be first assist on all of the surgeries because there were no residents there. I thought that was pretty cool.

Additionally, I think there are about 17 different hospitals within the U of M network in the cities that host students for rotations. This gives you a lot of options; some of the hospitals are pretty nice, and some will be more challenging. The U is also the only med school in the cities so you're not competing with students from other schools for spots in things like volunteering and research.

That's what I have off the top of my head...hopefully that helps!

Quick bit of hometown boosterism - the U will provide you with:

-Truly, some of the best research opportunities in the country
-A friendly midwestern atmosphere (somewhere between laid back West Coast and stuffy East Coast attitudes)
-The best cost of living/amenity ratio in the country IMO (i.e., there are some cheaper places to live, but none of them are as great as the cities)
-I have more than one friend who is taking advantage of the flex year AgentHill mentioned
-A medical community that is centered around the U. AgentHill covered it well, but I would emphasize that many local physicians are alumni, and the U is such a domineering presence in the medical community that everything really revolves around it.
 
Congrats on the acceptances!

I interviewed on 9/22 and got a missed call today, but no voice mail. I remember one of the admissions said that she would just leave a voice mail. This really makes me anxious. Was the the first 3 digits of the phone number 616?? trying to be hopeful 😱

Accepted around five today, interviewed 9/5...I still had my parent's home number on AMCAS so Dean Patel called there and my mom had to relay the news.
 
Accepted via phone call. Beyond happy and thrilled this long process is officially over.
 
I finally received an II yesterday at 3pm! My options were for dates in mid-November. I grew up in MN, though I became a WI resident just last year. I received my secondary on 8-15 and submitted on 8-17.

Congrats to everyone accepted and good luck to all (im)patiently waiting!
 
Accepted yesterday around 4:30 pm. Interviewed late August. Love the U of M, and still in disbelief right now!
 
Has anyone heard from the school today? I interviewed on 9/5, so was hoping to hear back yesterday or today... and so the wait continues!

If I remember correctly, they do most of their calling on Fridays (Oct. 15 being an exception since they have catch up work to do). I interviewed on 9/5 as well and heard right before 5:00 on Wednesday so you will know very soon!
 
If the committee only meets every other week, I would doubt they'd call on the off week though, so this week is exception, and if I remember correctly, they don't meet again until next weds ( and I assume every other week until done with filling the class).

They offered me two dates (Nov 10 and Oct 31st). I e-mailed requesting Nov 10th. Got a confirmation 10 days later confirming me for Oct 31st :smack:

For everyone accepted, has anyone received an email or status update change on the secondary site yet?
 
Nope, but looking at last year's thread it sounds like the acceptance packages arrived about 5 days after the call.

Duluth is actually very nice, if small. It's not that much colder in the winter (maybe 5F) and significantly cooler in the summer. Many locals go up to Duluth to relax by the beach and escape the heat & humidity inland. (Great Lake beaches are the best.)

That's good to know. I'm from Oklahoma and have never visited Minnesota. My interview at the TC campus in mid November will be my first experience in the region. I hope it goes well.
