2014-2015 University of Minnesota Application Thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Got a full tuition scholarship already, but I think it was a separate committee from the usual scholarship/financial aid committee.

Also, this was by far my worst-feeling interview of the cycle. I thought I screwed up every question and had zero connection with my interviewers. Don't give up hope - interviews are never what they seem!

Sorry, did not mean to create panic. I did NOT just get an email about this out of the blue, I had been in contact with the adcom about it, so if you haven't heard anything please don't be worried! I really don't pretend to know anything about their process or schedule, or when/how/why/quantity for merit awards.

I received one via phone call a couple weeks after my acceptance call. I also received an email about it a month later.

In that case I would absolutely send a LOI, but do it as soon as possible. And emphasize your commitment to the U, it can't hurt. Despite what I said, there's always a chance that word of you sending a letter will spread through word of mouth-and I would imagine that they only want to offer spots to OOS who they are confident may matriculate. Good luck! Wish you the best.

How do you send LOIs? Handwritten, typed, or emailed?

Anyone know about the flexible program, where you can complete the courses for medical school in 3.5 to 6 years with same med school tuition?

What's your question about it? I can try to answer from what I know.

Just wanted to know how it works if you want to do first 2 years in 3 instead, and how many folks are doing that? I think their program is unusual in that it's the same tuition. Thanks!

Have you looked on the website under flexible MD program? I don't think they publish the amount of students specifically who take advantage of the flex program.

I got the waitlist email yesterday afternoon after my 11/21 interview. My family lives in MN and I grew up there, so this was a disappointing email. But there is still hope!

I like your optimism. It's helpful to view things that way. And it's also very realistic.

@ChemNerd26 congratulations are still in order! even getting on the wait list here is a reason to celebrate. I also interviewed 11/21 but haven't heard anything. Is anyone else in the same boat?
Nah, I interviewed 12/12 so still waiting for awhile longer. Originally scheduled to interview on 11/17 but had to reschedule bc of weather. Best of luck

Which campus are y'all talking about?
Twin Cities, i apologize for not identifying the campus. As an OOS with no ties to the state nor region, I show my lack of familiarity with the Minneapolis-centric view. The Duluth campus didn't even enter my mind when i posted my response, no offense to the Duluth applicants on this thread as I found the entire university to be first rate on my visit.

Hello everyone--I'm so perplexed here. I received an interview invite early December, accepted, never received an email. Called, was confirmed for a date, no email. I emailed a few more times, and still no confirmatory email, no interview day schedule, etc. I am feeling concerned, not wanting to call and pester but this just seems really unusual. Is this typical of the experience others are having?

Don't worry. UofM is well known for being really slow. I think they took ~2 weeks to confirm my interview date. Considering it is in the middle of winter break things are likely to even take longer now. If they gave you an invite they will for sure interview you. I would only call them back if you are going to be flying in and need to schedule a flight.

Congrats to everyone who's been accepted and to those who have had interviews! Wanted to share a brief admissions update from our monthly email from the admin, quoted below. Good luck to you all- I'm glad I came here!

Admissions Update
The Admissions teams on the Twin Cities and Duluth campuses have been working tirelessly to recruit and admit an excellent Class of 2019. We'd like to give a big shout-out to all of the folks (faculty, staff, and students) who have been involved in making this happen; thanks so much for all of your hard work! To better understand the huge task of recruiting and admitting just one class at the Medical School, here the numbers (so far!) this year:

Duluth Admissions:
>1600 applications
125 applicants have been interviewed to date (with a couple more months of interviews left)
56 letters of acceptance have gone out (for a total class of 60)

Twin Cities Admissions:
4000 applications
600 interviews have been offered to date (with 2 more months of interviews left)
170 letters of acceptance have gone out (for a total class of 170)

This is great info! Thank you! Do you know the total number of students accepted pre-waitlist?

Hello,
Out of those accepted, how many are out of state applicants?

wait does that mean that 170 acceptance letters have gone out and unless someone turns one of those down, the whole class of 170 has already been chosen?

Not really. 170 letters have gone out, but admissions knows a certain portion of those acceptances will be withdrawn by applicants who choose to go somewhere else.

For example, Minnesota sent out 272 acceptances for 2012-2013 cycle, but only matriculated 160 MD applicants. According to the same year's SDN thread the waitlist only went to number 6, however there was mention of many waitlisted students being accepted before the formal waitlist was made.

It will be 5 weeks post interview for me this Friday. At my interview day we were told that we could expect a response between 6 to 8 weeks following our interview. Can anyone speak to whether it typically falls closer to the 6 or 8 weeks?

I was closer to 6, but I interviewed early October.

I interviewed in December a couple of years ago and was accepted in the middle of February
Thanks for the timely response, and again for all the pre-twin cities interview advice. I quite honestly had a superb time during my visit and interview and really hope to receive an acceptance from the school when notified.

Hey guys! So I interviewed 11/21 in the Twin Cities and have not heard back yet (8 weeks was yesterday). I'm curious if anyone has heard recently if they are running behind, or if anyone else from this interview date (or earlier) is still waiting for news. 8 weeks just feels so long, I don't really want to wait much longer! 🙂

Best of luck! It will be six weeks for me this next Friday but given that you've exceeded the 8 weeks window I'm a bit doubtful that I will hear anything soon.

I interviewed a week before (11/14) and still have not heard squat.

The time frame in which they notify you appears to be mystifying, in that some that interviewed slightly after that have already received notice while others such as yourself have not. I was under the impression that they evaluated candidates based on interview date, but i guess not.

So I have my interview here on Friday, how was the interview day for everyone? Feeling a bit nervous.
It was incredibly relaxed. They set the day up to be as low stress as possible. I encourage you to enjoy the experience and just have confidence in your responses to the interview questions, as you will already know the answers to them all. In my experience I was not thrown any curve ball questions and everything was based more or less on my application, I just had to provide a bit more depth and context. It was a fun day!

I concur. Initially the thought of two 45 min one on one sessions had me nervous but the interviewers were remarkably friendly and easygoing. Compared to my other interviews, MN was where I felt the most relaxed and able to hold a genuine conversation. Talk about yourself but also respond to their input and let the conversation flow naturally.

Hey, I believe that I interviewed the same day as you, 12/12 right? I think I remember you, as you were one of the only OOS students in the group. Looks like tomorrow will be 6 weeks, but I'm guessing it will be a couple more at least until we hear back

That's exactly right. And yes I expect, likely because of delays related to holidays, it will be longer. Which person were you? You may PM me if you prefer to answer that way

Got the acceptance call yesterday to twin cities! Interviewed 12/12. Best of luck to everyone waiting to hear back.
That's awesome. I wonder what their method is for contacting people, since we both interviewed at the same time.

congrats! I also interviewed 12/12, haven't heard anything yet (hope that isn't a bad sign). what were your stats if you don't mind me asking?

Not sure how to pm people, can you send me one? thanks

Has anyone from the 12/8 interview group heard back yet?

I'm from the 11/24 date and haven't heard anything yet...hoping for positive news whenever it comes! 🙂

So what's the explanation on why someone has heard and others haven't from that same date or range of dates? Every other school I know of communicates with you based on interview date. What is their process for determining what to do with you?

No idea...I know at some schools it depends on how accessible your interviewers are. Not sure if that applies here though...

Dang 11/24?? I interviewed 12/12! I can't wait that long!

And I know! This is definitely an exercise in patience haha.

Did anyone get an invitation for the second look weekend, but still doesn't have a post-interview decision on admission/rejection/wait list? I received one today, anyone else?
