Interviewed last Friday and Dimple said their relative class size is 160 but as of Friday they have surpassed 160 acceptances and will continue to send out acceptances until the end of the cycle. because of course like most school, not everyone who is accepted ends up going to the school.
Doesn't sound too promising for those on wait list.

I interviewed last Monday and asked him how many spots had been filled. Said he couldn't tell me but that there were still a "few " spots left.

I feel like they want the interviewees to feel like they have a chance so of course they will tell us they will continue to accept people. But I honesly doubt they have many spots left but a few I'm sure.

I'm sorry I'm so confused here.
1) My understanding is that schools accept 2-3x the class size. If the class size is 170, then they should be accepting upwards of 340?
2) Also-they are so late in reviewing the interviewees, and so it doesn't seem possible that from here going forward everyone is basically getting wait listed or rejected.
3) My final confusion is that if this school is taking 12 weeks to review interviewees-how in the world are folks gong to make decisions by April 30?

Also wait listed. Had a hostile interviewer so not terribly surprised. Hope for the best though; certainly still have months to go before this cycle is even close to complete.

1) State schools offer acceptance to a smaller ratio of IS residents because IS matriculation rates are high. U of M's IS acceptance/matriculation rate last year was 265/195: only 36% over what they matriculate for IS. On the other hand OOS was 125/35: over three times more than matriculate.

2) Interviewing costs the school resources and $. They wouldn't conduct interviews unless they have spots they need to fill. Though it will get more competitive as the class fills

3) Expect them to kick it into high gear as the season goes on. 12 weeks is ridiculous

@rikudo, you are just a gem! So truly there are a lot of acceptances to go...are you saying that 390 were accepted total last year and 220 matriculated? I was under the understanding that class size is 170?

2 and 3, word!

I'm sorry about that. I had a bit of a similar experience with my 1st interviewer, and then polar opposite with 2nd interviewer. I left feeling pretty nervous that I'd get bad marks by #1, but felt it was a bit out of my control. Such a bummer!

390 acceptances for both Duluth and Twin Cities Campuses. That includes an additional 60 seats the Duluth class. Sorry I don't have the breakdown between each campus.

Haha my experience was actually identical to yours in this respect. Such a shame they have that kind of inconsistency in their process, but in all honesty it was probably one of the most educational interviewing experiences I have had thus far and I know it is going to be a feather in my cap come residency interviews. Glass half full, glass half empty. Choose your perspective accordingly.

Just posting for a finer breakdown for those interested in the numbers. Closest year I had all the data for. Interpret it as you will. From 2012-2013 app cycle for Twin Cities(source UMN Medical School website):

•3826 Primary Pool

Supplemental Completed Pool (2133 total)
640 MN
1493 Non Resident
Interviewed Pool(646)
420 MN
226 Non Resident
Accepted Pool(272)
190 MN
82 Non Resident
Matriculated Pool(160)
131 MN
29 Non Resident

That means 112 offers of acceptance were passed over. That doesn't mean 112 were pulled off the wait list since every medical school does over accept with the knowledge that a certain portion will go elsewhere. A review of the SDN thread of the same year shows that the wait list only went to 6, but mentions offers of acceptance were issued to wait listed applicants before the official ranked wait list was created so the true "accepted from wait list" number is higher.

Good point--I like how you keep it positive! I also found mine educational. I had a similar experience at my 1st interview and it caught me off guard, but in hindsight it prepared me for UM. Having said that, I don't really think that the feel of the interview has a lot to do with the outcome, necessarily. Do you?

Anyone had their interview on January 12 and got results already? What time frame do you think we have to expect?

Just got my acceptance call today...interviewed 12/19. Despite what some people are posting, THERE ARE STILL SPOTS LEFT so don't give up hope if you haven't heard anything yet!!!

Congratulations! That's really great. Mind sharing if you are an IS or OOS applicant?

I interviewed on 1/12 and haven't heard any news. Anybody from the 1/12 day hear anything yet?

Hmm. Some would say that the outcome is the sum of its parts, but I do think that we ultimately decide our own path. To that end, it is curious how our choices in years past ultimately return to play a role in the verdicts we receive from schools in the present. All things additive.

Via email yesterday afternoon.

I interviewed around then too- seems weird how people from January interviews are hearing same time as those from end of November

Sorry to hear that :/ hopefully there's some good waitlist movement this year.

It kind of seems like OOS are reviewed separately or something. The timeline is really strange though. I interviewed on 1/12 and finally just called yesterday, since this is one of only two interviews I've had (and getting sooo anxious!). I was told that the committee is meeting again on Wednesday, and I should hear at the end of next week or the beginning of the following week. Hopefully the other January interviewees hear back then too! The admissions secretary said that my application was going to the last and final review on Wednesday. Hope that helps some of you who are curious!

Does anyone know if the Twin Cities campus is still giving out interviews?

Alright folks--anyone here back this last day or two? I interviewed 1/26 and though I know I still likely have a long wait, I'm crossing my fingers for some news!

Got a full tuition scholarship already, but I think it was a separate committee from the usual scholarship/financial aid committee.

Also, this was by far my worst-feeling interview of the cycle. I thought I screwed up every question and had zero connection with my interviewers. Don't give up hope - interviews are never what they seem!
Are you in state or out of state?

Anyone hear back yet? Thought they were meeting last Wednesday which means people should have heard back by now?

I haven't heard anything :/ yeah the office said end of last week or beginning of this week...hopefully we hear today or tomorrow!! It's so hard to wait!

Ok, update for everyone waiting post-interview: I just got more info and found out that there was an "executive admissions officer" meeting yesterday which happens after the final committee meeting, so the new timeline is that some notifications will be given out at the end of this week or beginning of next. The waiting continues!

Thank YOU for calling! You saved the rest of us from wondering so much.... 🙂

I am pretty anxious as well. I called the office recently and was told that to call back middle of next week if I don't hear anything by Tuesday and then they'd give me an "update on the application status." Kind of wished they'd give an update when I called! Interviewed in January.

Thank you I will probably do the same. They're probably waiting so they can send out a large group of updates

Just got wait listed too. Interviewed Jan. 12. I second the good luck to you all!

Wait listed. This was my last hope at a solid acceptance :/. Hoping things turn out well good luck to everyone

Interviewed on 1/23 and got waitlisted as well. OOS. Hope things work out for all of us.

HI all--little confused. I got a letter saying that I was waitlisted, but not for the entering class...but to make a decision on my application. I interviewed 1/26 and the letter was dated 3/16, stating that I wasn't given a spot in the entering class, but that my decision was put on the waiting list for final review to decide if I will be accepted, waitlisted, or rejected. Anyone else get this? Feels like a polite rejection. I'm a little sad, well maybe more than a little sad. I'm also very bummed about their admissions process as it's been challenging.

I'm pretty sure that is what they all say. And I agree that their timeframe and communications have been p#%* poor.

I find it perplexing--because it feels like a letter just to give them more time to decide, while technically notifying us in the 6-8 week window. Anyway, challenging indeed. I really like this school and city, and so it's hard to not get the acceptance!

I wasn't notified within that time. It was nearly 10 weeks for me. And yes, essentially it kicks the can some more. That's the wait list game

For those of you who got waitlisted, did you get a letter, email, call???

Did any February interviewees hear anything yet? Or did only January interviewees hear back yesterday?
