I had a similar experience during my interview as JingleChips, plus I went for a run along the canal trail and nearly everyone I passed said "hello" or "good morning", so it isn't just the people associated with the school that are nice.

As an outdoor enthusiast/not a big city person, I loved the area. Beautiful running or biking trails, and nearby opportunities to hike/ski/kayak ect. There are trees everywhere, and everything is green. The nearby Eastman School of Music also means plenty of student concerts if you are interested in those. The greatest deterrent for me would be the cold winters, but I'm sure that is something you learn to deal with.

The open space is a big part of why I loved growing up there, so many places to kayak/hike for hours without seeing a soul. I'd suggest anyone visiting try to take some time to visit the parks. Frederick Law Olmsted, the designer of Central Park, also did Genesee Valley (along the river by the campus) and Highland park (Where the lilac festival is).

Besides that @Old&InTheWay is right, the city has a lot of problems. Rochester is what it is (a white collar version of Buffalo) and the school is kind of tucked away from where a lot of young people live. I'd recommend checking out the areas north of the campus, particularly by the music school. If you have the time, start at east ave and Main and go out of the city from there, swing up to University ave and go past the art gallery and the Eastman House. Head back toward campus down park ave between Culver and Alexander, lots of shops, restaurants, and bars. http://rocwiki.org/Southeast_Quadrant is a good place to start.
 
random q but do yall respond to admissions emails to say thank you? (any school, not necessarily UR) e.g. if I send in an update and they email me to say it has been added to my file, should I thank them or no? in normal cases I always email people thanks, but for busy people or in this case admissions offices, I feel like they would prefer less clutter/emails. thoughts??

I wouldn't. It's such a minor thing that I'm sure they'd just prefer less clutter.
 
Does anyone have any statistics on the number of people who are accepted vs. the number who interview?
 
Hey y'all, just wondering. Did all of you receive the Rochester brochure in the mail? That looks like a pretty darn expensive piece of paper to send to every applicant..
 
Interview was pretty relaxed as others have said, the students seem happier than some other schools. Definitely recommend sitting in on a lecture or two if your interview schedule allows (it likely will), the instructors were great in mine!
 
judging by last year's thread it looks like a lot of notifications of acceptances went out oct 15/16... think those of us who have interviewed already have our fate decided? I check the app status and can't find "accepted" anywhere lol

I've never stayed there, but there's a holiday inn between the airport and the university.

Also try the staybridge suites across the river from the undergrad campus, the hospital uses their conference room frequently so they might be able to offer a discount. Comes with the perk of being close to boulder coffee, one of the better shops in the city.

I stayed at the staybridge suite! Great discount, nice place.
 
Completed 7/1 and still dead silence. Really would love to interview at this school!!!

The school. I have an interview and I'm trying to figure out what Rochester. What kind of vibe did some of you guys get from the school? I applied because they were in NY and had some cool ortho research going on but otherwise I can't figure out online what makes this school great. I like their elective pathways but I honestly don't know much else.

I wouldn't worry too much about not getting the brochure! I received the brochure and haven't heard anything since being complete so maybe it's just random!
 
So this might be an ignorant question on my part, but I have an interview this week at U of R--will I be getting a decision on October 15, even though there isn't much turn around time?

Most likely not. 8 weeks after your interview.

I suppose it depends on whether the admissions committee meets between your interview and the 15th. That said, everyone should be aware that not all people who have interviewed thus far will be receiving a decision on or around 10/15. It is my understanding that Rochester, like many medical schools, will give out some acceptances throughout the cycle, but many applicants will hear nothing until later in the cycle. As a reapplicant who has gone through the emotional roller coaster of anticipating hearing something on a given date, I highly encourage everyone not to expect a call but be thrilled if it does indeed come. This will save you from many grey hairs.

Interviewing in November. Did my undergrad here and I would say I found several things great about the school. It is extremely easy to start research with a PI, curriculum involves clinical from the first year, cheap housing, Eastman, small school feel, snowiest place in the US(if you're into that). There are too many positives. Let's know if you need specifics.
