2014-2015 University of Rochester Application Thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Just got the housing application info in the mail. If I go here (most likely will happen, waiting to hear back from 1 more school in 2ish weeks) I definitely want to live in a house in the "white coat ghetto" with 2-3 other students. So, I don't think I'm even going to submit the university housing application.....

Anyone else planning to do the same? I want to make sure I'm not shooting myself in the foot by not sending in a University Housing application.

On the same boat. They look nice and might be a good choice for the first year while you get used to Rochester, but $700+ for a 1br is too much for the area.

Yep yep. Just heard back from a current student there - he said that living options in the "white coat ghetto"are plentiful and so I don't need to submit the university housing application as a backup plan.

The FB group needs to get started so0o0n so that the hunt for roommates can begin!

Who normally starts the facebook groups? I have been sitting here for like 4 weeks now, hoping someone will start it. But should I just do that?

waitlisted. absolute best interview experience I've had all year, same terrible outcome. suddenly feeling very hopeless about my chances this cycle. best of luck to the rest of you.

Wait listed as well, definitely frustrating, but keep your head up dude and send updates! If we make HPWL In the spring then acceptance is most likely in the bag!

Do you know when they start that? Or when they started with HPWL last year?

Looks like last year notifications were sent out in the first week of April.

I hear you, hopefully good news is on the horizon!

Hey did you (or anyone else) send updates? If you did, did they respond confirming that they received the update? If they did what did they say in the response?

I sent an update via email to the admissions office. I got a response about 10 days later saying it had been added to my file.

UR loves updates! Don't give up hope - my interview day I met a med student and this was the only school he was waitlisted at (no other acceptances I believe). Showed his dedicated interests and now he's there! Everyone at URMC is super nice! Good luck!

Wow Rochester really fell in rankings this year. I know that they don't mean much but the Dean was very proud of how Rochester was top 25 research and primary care (or something like that) and now they are neither.

Is this for 2016? It looks the same as 2015... I don't remember the dean saying that on my interview day and I don't believe they were ever in the top 25 but maybe they were or he was referring to a different ranking system?

I actually remember the dean saying something similar, but in reality they've been 34th in the ranking for at least the last two years, so this isn't news. also, the rankings mean nothing so don't worry about it.

Was anyone else expecting to hear something today? I guess the third Thursday of the month isn't a standard thing.

Accepted on Wednesday 3/18 and so excited about it. I didn't know they would still be offering acceptances.

My stats for future applicants that are curious:
OOS
LizzyM 73
International experience + year of service after undergrad
Secondary submitted mid-August
Interviewed first week of February

Good luck to people still waiting or on the waitlist. Glad I'm finally contributing something to SDN after lurking on the forums for so long 🙂

Withdrew my acceptance earlier this week. It was a tough decision and if hadn't gotten accepted to my state school, this is where I'd be attending. Good luck to everyone; I hope my spot goes to one of you all.

Edit: Just read through @DoctorLacrosse's comeback thread and I have decided I would like my spot to go to him.

Does anyone know when the wait list usually starts moving?

any other sdn'rs attending second look weekend? i've pretty much committed here but i want to check out the housing options so i'm gonna make the trip up.

I wonder if they are going to send out a HPWL... has anyone tried calling?

Question about the HPWL. Is it something that we could get after the initial wait-list email, or is it one in lieu of the initial wait-list? Couldn't tell from perusing past threads.

Never mind, figured it out. For others who might have been wondering, it's a separate email in addition to the initial wait-list email.

It's pretty late for the HPWL compared to previous years. Unless it magically appears for people tomorrow, I'm inclined to believe that maybe they just aren't doing it this year.

Unless simply nobody on SDN was placed on high priority

I got tired of speculating about HPWL emails so I called the admissions office and they said HPWL emails are not being sent out this year... the person I spoke to on the phone did not know why admissions made that decision, but she did say that waitlist movement usually occurs in late spring/early summer. And that their waitlist is not ranked. So not much new information, but I thought I would share for those that are curious.

Wow thanks for calling them! Gah I wonder what late spring/early summer means. May? June?

I mean it seems to me that there are probably only a few potential reasons that they made that decision:
1. They simply couldn't decide between waitlisted applicants at this point to commit to a few by placing them on this list
2. They already admitted too many students and therefore are unsure if there will be any movement on their waitlist so they didn't want to give people potentially false hope
3. They were just lazy (doubt this one)

Oooor they realized that it wasn't practically useful. Not necessarily due to any of the above reasons.

I agree, it seems to be more of a trend this year that schools are not releasing information concerning where applicants are placed on their waitlists.

At least May is almost here!!!

Withdrew yesterday as well. This was one of the most difficult decisions, I really loved Rochester. Good luck everyone!
